I love the name [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] (sound, vibe, meaning) but I don’t like any of the nicknames especially [name_u]Chris[/name_u] - no offence to any Chris’s out there!
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it would be possible to have a [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and have people use the full name and avoid ‘Chris’? [name_u]Or[/name_u] would they just inevitably end up being called that at school or by friends.
Also interested to hear if anyone knows a [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] who goes by the full name only?
Yes, I know a young [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] who is never called anything else! Whatever you call him is what others will refer to him as. I also know multiple girls named [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who never have their names shortened. It is very possible.
[name_f]My[/name_f] brother is [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and that’s what we all call him, except my daughter as she called him [name_u]Chris[/name_u] when she was younger as it was easier to say and it’s just stuck!
I have a family member Christopher who gets Christopher by most people in the family (but Chris from his friends). I really like the name Christopher and I think it’s possible to enforce the full name (I have a few friends who have successfully insisted on their full names - and in Australia no less which nicknames everything). I would aim for Christopher but otherwise default to nn’s Christo, Kit or Topher.
I’ve known a little [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] who was exclusively called [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] - it was all his parents and siblings called him and how he introduced himself too. I called him [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] therefore and so did the other kids in the class he was in. However, there was one teacher (who nicknamed everyone) who called him [name_u]Chris[/name_u].
The thing is, some people are nicknamers and will nickname however, as in this case, if he introduced himself as [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], people will call him as such if they don’t naturally nickname. I know that doesn’t really answer your question, but I guess what I’m saying is he could mostly be called [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], with the odd person calling him [name_u]Chris[/name_u]?
Thanks everyone - it’s good to hear different perspectives. I’m wondering if the fact that the name [name_u]Chris[/name_u] annoys me so much and will inevitably be used by some people at some point means that I should just avoid it - also want to avoid creating difficulty for them having to ‘enforce’ a full name. I have the same dilemma with Michael/ [name_m]Mike[/name_m]!
is it possible? yes, if a person named [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] introduces himself as such and insists on being called by his full name, people will fall in line.
it’s similarly possible that he could come home from school one day and decide he wants to go by [name_u]Chris[/name_u]. at that point, would you be able to call him chris? if not, I don’t think this is the name for you.
