I say it like the name [name]Claire[/name]. With ah at the end. That’s how I’ve always heard it be pronounced and that’s how I’ve always pronounced it. But I guess it could go both ways really.

Certainly, I understand Klar-a and would say it that way if introduced that way.
But [name]Claire[/name]-a is what I think when I see it.
I associate that prn more with Spanish/[name]German[/name]/etc., a continental language that uses it.
Is the Anglosphere as a whole divergent on this one?
I think it is for [name]Cara[/name] and maybe [name]Lara[/name], also [name]Sara[/name]!
[name]Claire[/name]-a is pretty well (but maybe not exclusively?) established as the prn in the US.
But I can see it being Klar-a in the UK, maybe also not in Australia, South [name]Africa[/name], [name]Canada[/name], etc.

I’m Australian and here it is always Klar-ah. I only realised the difference when I was considering [name]Clara[/name] for my daughter & posted here wondering about nicknames; I got comments suggesting [name]Claire[/name]-[name]Bear[/name] and it took a while for me to understand why, as I had not heard the [name]Klare[/name]-ah pn. For the record, I would have gone with [name]Ari[/name] as a nn.

I would say kl-ah-ra if I saw it written down but will call the person whatever they want.

I’m in Australia and have always said it this way. Plus I work with a [name]Clara[/name] pronounced like this. I think she has Italian heritage.

I say it both ways. Actually, I really like it pronounced Klar-a, but that feels more European to me- I think it sounds more American when it is said [name]Claire[/name]-a. Since I’m always going back and forth with how I say it, I’ve gone off the name a bit, but I do think it is beautiful either way.

I say Klar-ah. I dislike the claire-a pronounciation.

In the UK, I’ve only ever heard it pronounced as Klar-ah! Guessing it’s a regional thing…

I’ve only heard it as [name]Claire[/name]-a here in [name]Canada[/name] too. :slight_smile:

I’m from the U.S but say it both ways. Most people around here say [name]Claire[/name]-uh but my family pronounces it Klar-ah.

i always thought [name]Claire[/name] - uh. I am in the US and thought maybe norwegian pronunciation was more Klar-uh. I think it is a name that could be either and as soon as the person told me how to pronounce it that would be it

I say it like Klar-ah, as in car. I really don’t like claire-ah, I would rather have just [name]Claire[/name] at that point. (I love [name]Claire[/name], too).

I pronounce it as [name]Claire[/name] with an “ah” on the end. “KLAR-ah” sounds really harsh and unattractive to me…
