Clara sister name (Portuguese speaking in-laws)

We are expecting a little girl in [name_u]December[/name_u] (whoooo quarantine baby!) and our daughter [name_f]Clara[/name_f] will be 2.5. We want a similar in style name (Vintage, short, punchy) and we can’t agree on anything.

An extra level of complication is that my in-laws only speak Portuguese so the name has to work for both languages (ex: I love my grandmothers name “[name_f]Mae[/name_f]” but that literally translates to “Mom” so it’s a no go. I love the name “[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]” but the pronunciation sounds like “Hooby” so no way). Also, as is customary in many [name_u]South[/name_u] American countries, my kids will have two last names and no middle. So this first name is really all they get. Here are my favorites so far (Portuguese equivalent or pronunciation in parenthesis.) We will be using [name_f]English[/name_f] version at home, Portuguese version with family. Please feel free to add your own suggestions!! Everything helps!

  • Clara and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] ([name_m]Ah[/name_m]-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]-See)
  • Clara and [name_f]Emily[/name_f] ([name_f]Emilia[/name_f])
  • Clara and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] ([name_u]Julie[/name_u]-etche)
  • Clara and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] (no difference)
  • Clara and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] (no difference)
  • Clara and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] (E-[name_f]Stella[/name_f])

Hi, @BritBuckFig! Congratulations for your second baby girl! :baby:
I’m Portuguese, so I hope this reply helps you.

I admit that I had a hard time accepting Mae as a name, but now I love it! Perhaps you could spell it Mei or May?
Clara is a gorgeous name! Your list is stunning! All the options are perfect, in my opinion.

I can tell by the pronunciations that your in-laws are Brazilian because in Portugal we pronounce Stella and Emily the same way the names are pronounced in English. I believe Emily is actually quite popular name in Brazil right now, but they say it like Emee-lee.
I believe Ruby would work for you! In Portuguese, I pronounce it with a softer R than in English, but I think the difference is minimal. Am I wrong?
Instead of Juliet, would you consider Julieta? I think it would sound quite similar in both languages.
I love Clara and Alice together. These two names are so sweet and elegant! I love that you have Agnes on you list. I rarely see it. It would be a very unexpected choice :grinning: Vivian is a beautiful international name too!!

Wow your options are stunning!
I am partial to [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] because that is my niece so I am 100% bias !!!

I really love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]! I feel like it is revival fresh and pretty uncommon . I love [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] and Ness as potential nicknames

Clara and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] make a gorgeous sibling set! I love the pronunciation of [name_f]Estella[/name_f]

Alice and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] are divine together. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] has a lot of history and significance. It feels regal and I feel the flow with big sister is matchy without being alliterative

Emily. I just love [name_f]Emily[/name_f] . It is a timeless choice but maybe a little too common.

Juliet. Another beautiful classic, with strong literary significance.

“Talking” all your options out I think that I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] the best on its own and with [name_f]Clara[/name_f]

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] are my favorites for you!

Clara and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is so sweet.

Wow this is crazy! I’m expecting a second daughter. [name_f]My[/name_f] first is 2.5 and named [name_f]Clara[/name_f] too. We are also looking for a name that works for [name_f]English[/name_f] and Portuguese. We also love short, vintage, spunky-sweet names. I also loved [name_f]Mae[/name_f] before I met my Portuguese-speaking husband. And, I have the same hang up with R names sounding terrible with the H sound Portuguese people use for the R — [name_m]Little[/name_m] Hosa lol. I’m curious what name you ended up going with!
