I have never heard [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] anything else but a boy name. Personally I do not care for [name_m]Clarence[/name_m].

[name_m]Clarence[/name_m] is the name of a male member in my family so it’s ALL-[name_m]MALE[/name_m] for me.

I am not a fan of [name_m]Clarence[/name_m], although it is a family name (one great uncle).

I think it has some currency, strictly as a boy’s name, in the African American community. Outside of that, it does not seem to be much in use – and personally that is fine with me – although if [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] can make a come-back, why not [name_m]Clarence[/name_m]? Well other than both seem dowdy and ugly to me, I can’t think of one reason. [name_u]Baby[/name_u] names aren’t all about me. And don’t you hate that?

But please not for a girl – and why? There are dozens of versions of “clear light” in play for girls including [name_f]Chiara[/name_f]-rhymes-with-tiara to honestly old-fashioned [name_f]Clara[/name_f], from girly girl [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f] to classic [name_f]Claire[/name_f].

is a lovely choice.

[name_m]Clarence[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] stinks but [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] the angel in It’s a Wonderful Life is superb.

I’m biased because my first male cat, a big furry Siamese cross, was named [name_m]Clarence[/name_m], and he was a wonderful cat.

Elegant and manly and soft and sweet.

Great name choice!

Me again. I didn’t want to say before, but yes I definitely thought [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] was a boy’s name, whereas my sister kept insisting it was for girls. I showed her basically every baby naming website I could find, my mother’s old baby naming book, plus examples such as [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] in It’s a Wonderful Life, like you said, or [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] Wiedman from the show [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_m]Mars[/name_m], but she just would not believe me for some reason.

It’s actually been very, very frustrating haha, so I thought asking here and seeing what everyone thinks would help. Seeing as everyone answered boy (not even 1 vote for unisex!) I think it’s pretty obviously an only male name. I think she might be confused with [name_f]Clarice[/name_f], but who knows.

Also yes, my other sister who actually wants to use the name [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] would only use it for a boy, so no worries there.

Thank you so much for helping out!

I like [name_m]Clarence[/name_m], in an oldy-worldy way. My first thought when I see/hear it, is of [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Duke[/name_m] of [name_m]Clarence[/name_m], brother of [name_m]Edward[/name_m] IV and [name_m]Richard[/name_m] III - who had quite a gruesome death - and so I think of it as a decidedly male name.

[name_m]Clarence[/name_m] is definitely male. I think she must be confusing it with [name_f]Clarice[/name_f].
I’m not a huge fan, but it’s hovering vaguely around the sort of style I tend to like, so it might grow on me.

[name_m]Clarence[/name_m] is a very handsome and good name for a boy, not at all a girl or unisex name in my eyes.

[name_m]Clarence[/name_m] is a male name. [name_f]Clarice[/name_f] is a similar feminine form.

There is a girl named [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] in my old dorm. So yes, this is a girl name for me. I also have a long time friend named Clarensia.

[name_m]Clarence[/name_m] is male. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not sure if there is a viable male short form nowadays… in the past I believe men with this name would use [name_u]Clare[/name_u] (but that is very feminine now). Otherwise, I think its a fine name and doesn’t feel that dowdy to me. I could see a little [name_m]Clarence[/name_m] sitting in kindergarten with a little [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]…

I think it’s a lovely unisex name

Thanks again to everyone for answering/voting!
