Classic first name to pair with middle name Laura

My name is Laura and I’m named after my maternal great-grandmother and my dad Lawrence. (Lawrence also happens to be a family name on dh’s side) So I’d love to use Laura as a middle name for a future girl. However, Laura always sounds a little off in the middle spot perhaps b/c I’m use to hearing it first =) Our last name is two-syllable starts with T and ends with -son. To give you an idea of our style my other daughters names are Clare and Katharine (nn Kate/Katie/Kat). I’d love some suggestions. On my own I came up with Elizabeth Laura. I’m not very excited by Elizabeth though. My favorite girls name is Theresa nn Tess but I think the repeating -a ending of Theresa Laura sounds a little off and I’m uncertain about the alliteration of Theresa with my last name.

[name]Hi[/name]! [name]Love[/name] the name [name]Laura[/name]!

Would you consider [name]Lauren[/name] and [name]Laurel[/name] since the family tradition includes both Lauras and Lawrences? Or even consider [name]Lawrence[/name] in the middle (looks a little more fem spelled [name]Laurence[/name])?

I love [name]Laura[/name], but agree with you that the matching -a endings with [name]Theresa[/name] might be too much. But [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Lauren[/name] or or [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] or [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Lawrence[/name] could solve that.

I think [name]Theresa[/name] T-son is fine, same with [name]Tess[/name] T-son. It’s alliteration that works. There are different numbers of syllables, and the endings and other sounds are different.

I think [name]Elizabeth[/name] is very nice! But I can also understand if it feels a little too staid. [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Laura[/name] might have the -a problem, but [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Laurence[/name] might be options.

[name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Laura[/name] might capture some of that feel of [name]Elizabeth[/name] but be a little bit more off beat?

[name]Margaret[/name] is another classic, and I like [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Laura[/name]. Lots of great nn’s with [name]Margaret[/name], like for [name]Katharine[/name].

I’d also love:
[name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Laura[/name] (although initials BLT might or might not be OK)
[name]Caroline[/name] [name]Laura[/name] (very close to sisters’ names, for better or worse)
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Laura[/name] ([name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Lorelei[/name] would break up the rhythm, although [name]Lorelei[/name]'s a very different name)
[name]Eve[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Laura[/name] / [name]Helena[/name] [name]Lauren[/name] / [name]Helena[/name] [name]Laurel[/name]
[name]Jane[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] / [name]Louisa[/name] [name]Lauren[/name] (to me, alliteration that works)
[name]Mary[/name] [name]Laura[/name] ([name]Mary[/name] [name]Lauretta[/name] might break up the rhythm more?)
[name]Rosemary[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Laura[/name]

Sure there are more. Good luck!

I’ve given some thought to using Laurence as a girls name - I know they do in France - I’ll have to see what dh thinks. I haven’t given Lauren much thought b/c I have a natural bias against it b/c of being mistaken for a Lauren on some occasions but maybe it deserves a shot.

My favorite of your combos is Margaret Laura. I know dh will have a hard time with Margaret but he never uses Katharine’s full name either so as long as I can sell him on the nickname…I’m sure dh would love Maggie though I’m partial to Mae or Meg.

Hmm, I like [name]Theresa[/name] as well (can have [name]Tess[/name], [name]Tess[/name], or [name]Reese[/name]!), and I think that alliterative names can be charming! But I see the [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laura[/name] dilemma… Have you thought of using another variant of [name]Laura[/name]? Maybe [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laure[/name], [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Lauren[/name], [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laurence[/name] (a French girls’ name), or even [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Lorelai[/name] would still honor your family and you, but allow for a name with an -a ending?

[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Laura[/name] is lovely, but I can see how it might feel a tad unexciting. Perhaps you could use a great nickname; [name]Bess[/name] and [name]Beth[/name] are very similar to [name]Tess[/name]! Or with [name]Clare[/name] and [name]Katharine[/name], what about…

[name]Molly[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Alice[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Anne[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Ellen[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] [name]Laura[/name] ([name]Mae[/name], [name]Margot[/name], [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Greta[/name]…)
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Marian[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Anneliese[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Bridget[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Adeline[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Briony[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Rosalind[/name] [name]Laura[/name]

Didn’t mean to repeat–jesba and I must be on the same page!

Okay, so I think you are both on to something.

Before when I’ve tried to come up with a middle name for [name]Theresa[/name] I’ve been wanting something that while still classic sounded slightly more modern. I see [name]Theresa[/name] as timeless, classic, beautiful (I could go on and on) but I know the general perception is that it’s dated to the 1960s so I want to find a classic middle name that sounded fresh. Does [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Lauren[/name] or [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laurence[/name] fit the bill better.

I like them both. [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Lauren[/name] might be a tad more approachable if you took a poll outside of NB (I’d say it’s a modern classic, though I know a lot of [name]Lauren[/name]‘s in their 20s so I don’t know if it will become dated…). Though perhaps not a classic, I think [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laurence[/name] is particularly smashing; [name]Laurence[/name] is elegant and unusual (and I like the way the French emphasis on the 2nd syllable sounds with [name]Theresa[/name], though you could just as easily pronounce it like the boys’ name). I don’t find [name]Theresa[/name] too dated, though–maybe if you planned to call her [name]Terry[/name], but considering the more modern nicknames [name]Theresa[/name] can take, I think it’s golden. [name]Clare[/name], [name]Kate[/name], and [name]Tess[/name] sound like sisters.

I’m a [name]Laura[/name] too and agree with you that it sounds strange in the middle.
Have you considered using two middle names so that it has got something to follow.
For example
[name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laura[/name] [name]May[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name] [name]Laura[/name] [name]Kate[/name]

If you went with [name]Elizabeth[/name] you could always use the nickname [name]Bess[/name] which is similar to [name]Tess[/name].
I believe you can also [name]Tess[/name] as a nickname for [name]Elizabeth[/name] too.

Some other suggestions:
[name]Emily[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Madeline[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Danica[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Annabel[/name] [name]Laura[/name]

of [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Lauren[/name] or [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laurence[/name]…it’s a tough call, but I’d probably go with [name]Laurence[/name] since your heart seems to be there more.

However I really like [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laurel[/name], but it seems like you don’t? just making sure you saw it.

[name]Margaret[/name] [name]Laura[/name] is really smashing, and [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Mae[/name], [name]Meg[/name], [name]Maisie[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Margo[/name], there are just so many options!

Not a huge fan of [name]Laurel[/name].

Still liking [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Laura[/name] except after my last post I realized I should have mentionned what my sons names are - [name]Paul[/name], [name]Mark[/name], and [name]James[/name]. [name]Mark[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] are too close although [name]Margaret[/name] would likely be [name]Meg[/name] or [name]Maggie[/name] or [name]Mae[/name].

Fair enough on [name]Laurel[/name]! It’s pretty but always reminds me of [name]Laurel[/name] and [name]Hardy[/name] : D.

[name]Ah[/name], yes, [name]Mark[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] would be pretty close, although with the nicknames it could be OK. Still tricky though. [name]James[/name] and [name]Jane[/name] must be too close too, hmm.

There is also the nickname [name]Greta[/name] fwiw.

What about [name]Madeline[/name]/[name]Madeleine[/name]/[name]Magdalen[/name]? Goes nicely with [name]Laura[/name] and would have some of the same nn’s as [name]Margaret[/name] (or similar), but is further from [name]Mark[/name].

[name]Glad[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] is really a good option and I do think [name]Theresa[/name] is lovely and would fit right in with the siblings and work with your last name.

Good luck!

I’ve tried to like [name]Magdalen[/name] - the church dh and I were married in was St. [name]Mary[/name] [name]Magdalen[/name] but I just haven’t found the love…

My number 1 fav name for a girl is [name]Laura[/name]. [name]Love[/name] it!

[name]How[/name] about:
[name]Hannah[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Ellen[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Anna[/name] [name]Laura[/name]
[name]Arabella[/name] [name]Laura[/name]

And by the way, I think [name]Theresa[/name] [name]Laura[/name] is wonderful!

So one other variant of [name]Laura[/name] that I like is [name]Laurent[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though it is usually used for a boy’s name, I think it could work on a girl, especially as a middle name.
