Okay, baby still doesn’t have a name which in my family is perfectly acceptable but doesn’t seem too smooth to the rest of the world. It’s down to [name]Clementine[/name] and [name]Violet[/name]. Husband prefers [name]Violet[/name] (but he’ll go for [name]Clementine[/name]). I prefer [name]Clementine[/name]. [name]Love[/name] the meaning. [name]Love[/name] its sunny nature. I think most people in my world ‘get’ [name]Violet[/name]. And [name]Clementine[/name] just sounds odd to them. And most people don’t like the shortened ‘[name]Clem[/name]’ or ‘[name]Clemmie[/name]’. I’m just wondering how wildly popular [name]Violet[/name] has become? And how trendy it feels? Thanks!
Honestly, I prefer [name]Clementine[/name]. [name]Violet[/name] is extremely popular, and getting more so every day (it was just #588 in 2004, but it rose to #141 by 2009). It’s a pretty name, but also an epidemic, and when a name becomes too popular, it just doesn’t seem that pretty anymore.
[name]Clementine[/name] on the other hand, is a beautiful, underused, classic name. You shouldn’t worry about other people’s opinions–this is your baby, and they will get used to whatever you pick. A more unique name might even be more interesting to them than a popular one that they “get” like [name]Violet[/name]. I don’t really love the nicknames [name]Clem[/name] or [name]Clemmie[/name], but if they’re what you like of course you can use them, or you could use a different nickname like [name]Cleo[/name] or [name]Emmie[/name].
Good luck!
[name]Clementine[/name] or [name]Violet[/name]: hard to say. [name]Violet[/name] isn’t nearly as popular as it seems, but it’s very trendy, which means it’ll probably become a lot more popular in coming years. It’s not the same as picking a name like [name]Isabella[/name] or [name]Ava[/name], but it’s definitely not a unique or unexpected choice, which [name]Clementine[/name] is more of. I really love the name [name]Violet[/name], but I’m not sure I would actually use it now (assuming I’m old enough to have kids, which I’m not). Have you thought about [name]Viola[/name]?
[name]Clementine[/name] is really growing on me. I used to be unable to imagine it on a kid (as opposed to a character, pet, or inanimate object) but I recently met an actual [name]Clementine[/name], about 8 or 9 years old, which helped. I think her family called her ‘Clemen’, rhyming with lemon, which is kind of cute (other nicknames could be [name]Minnie[/name], [name]Cleo[/name], [name]Minty[/name], [name]Tina[/name], [name]Lenny[/name], [name]Lena[/name])… I, personally, wouldn’t use it because it still seems too ‘out there’ and reminds me of the fruit (not that that’s a bad association); it’s more of a guilty pleasure for me, but I totally get the ‘sunny’ feel of the name. I think it’ll get way more useable in the next few years as more people catch on, so if you want to be ahead of the curve, go ahead!
I think for me, I would prefer to be named [name]Violet[/name], because I don’t think I could pull off a name like [name]Clementine[/name], but it’s totally up to you. Does your area have a lot of Violets? Is it more of a tryndeigh ([name]Kaylee[/name], [name]Braden[/name]) area, or will names like [name]Clementine[/name] blend in fine? Also, does she have a greater resemblance to one of the names? You also might want to figure out which goes better with the last name, or future sibling names.
Good luck!
I like both names, but if you dont want a popular name then i would go with [name]Clementine[/name].
Also [name]Violet[/name] sounds like violence.
But whatever one you choose will be very pretty.
I adore the name [name]Violet[/name] and have for a long time . . . of course, when I first fell in love with the name I didn’t anticipate it would take on that semi-trendy feel it has now, and to be honest I don’t think I would use it at this point.
I [name]LOVE[/name] the previous poster’s suggestion of [name]Viola[/name].
[name]Clementine[/name] is cute, but I think it’s a little too out there and I can’t get past the “Oh my darlin’” thing.
I have mixed feelings. I think both names are great.
The words I see when I hear these names are violent and lemon which can be a little offputting.
I think that [name]Violet[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] makes a great combo. [name]Viola[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] has even more softness and femininity than [name]Violet[/name] so that would work too.
I think I would pair [name]Clementine[/name] with a very pretty and girly name eg [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Rose[/name] I think that sounds delicious.
At the end of the day I think I prefer [name]Clementine[/name] but she could easily have a future sibling named [name]Violet[/name].
[name]Both[/name] are great! We had clementine on and off our list this whole pregnancy. We ultimately crossed it off because it’s a long name that will inevitably get shortened to [name]Clem[/name] or clemmie and we didn’t like those nn.
[name]Violet[/name] is equally adorable, but like you said very popular. I love the suggestion of viola. I’d go with one of those.
My vote would definitely be for [name]Clementine[/name]!!
I think [name]Violet[/name] is too popular and it always reminds me of violent. [name]Just[/name] remind your family that 10 years ago, they may have felt about [name]Violet[/name] (it wasn’t in the top 1000 names from 1983-1997! It didn’t hit the top 500 til 2005 and now it’s at 141!) the way they now feel about [name]Clementine[/name] as it was out of fashion but has made a huge come back and is now acceptable again. But explain that this is also the reason you have reservations about it, because you don’t want your child sharing her name with so many other little Violets!
I do prefer some varitations of [name]Violet[/name] though, like [name]Viola[/name] and [name]Violetta[/name] if that helps! I also like [name]Clementina[/name] and [name]Clemencia[/name].
[name]Do[/name] you have any middle names picked out yet? And do either of the names sound better with your last name?
Best of luck and congrats
[name]Hi[/name]! I like both [name]Clementine[/name] and [name]Violet[/name], honestly.
I think [name]Clementine[/name] is very whimsical, yet she has a sophistication that something equally as whimsical, say [name]Trixie[/name], might not have. I don’t care for [name]Clem[/name] as a nickname, though, because it reminds me of Clym ([name]Clement[/name]) Yeobright in [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Hardy[/name]'s ‘The Return of the Native.’ [name]Don[/name]'t ask me why, but it sounds masculine. I like the spunky [name]Cleo[/name] instead! I do think [name]Clementine[/name] has the tendency to sound rather youthful, but that doesn’t mean it can’t grow with a little girl. Perhaps [name]Clementine[/name] might be more challenging to match, sibling-wise, but I think something vintage along the lines of [name]Leopold[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name] would pair beautifully.
[name]Violet[/name] is a classic vintage name with immense feminine charm and delicate appeal. [name]Violet[/name] is this little old ladylike name masked in a package of substance and strong character. Some might say it sounds a bit harsh with the strong V and T sounds, and it does, but the image the name gives off is one of poise, beauty, and elegance - thus, the harsh package is balanced. I might say I slightly prefer [name]Viola[/name] for its interesting, exotic, and slightly less popular appeal, but [name]Violet[/name] is the perfect pairing of whimsy and classic appeal.
I don’t think you can go wrong either way, and even [name]Violet[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] or [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Viola[/name] would work beautifully for your daughter if you don’t already have a middle name selected for her. Best of luck!
[name]Lemon[/name]
I vote for violet (or,as previous posters suggested, viola) hands down! I am not a fan of trendy names, just so you’re aware. And I am NOT a fan of clementine…sorry! I picture a hillbily/redneck/white trashy persona with that name. Sorry, again

Ditto the above! If I were you, I would go with [name]Clementine[/name], but what do YOU think your baby looks like? Which one “fits”? What about [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Violet[/name] if you absolutely cannot decide? Ultimately, go with your heart. If you want my opinion - I [name]ADORE[/name] both [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name]. I love them.
I really, really love both names ON PAPER but I couldn’t ever actually use the name [name]Clementine[/name].
While I think it is a beautiful name I would feel silly if it was my name and that is my ultimate end all question: Would I love my name to be _____. So for this reason I would choose [name]Violet[/name] ([name]Vi[/name], [name]Viola[/name], [name]Lettie[/name] <3) but I think you should choose the name you love the most!! If you’re unable to choose between them maybe you could try and find something of significance in one relating to you, your partner, a relative, your pregnancy with her, etc. Good [name]Luck[/name]!!
what are the middle name choices for each name? both names are beautiful - I love them!!
[name]Both[/name] are beautiful names. [name]Violet[/name] is getting a bit trendy, and is a “celeb” baby name to a lot of non-NE types who don’t understand the awesomeness of cool and unusual names. That being said, [name]Violet[/name] shows no signs of slowing down in popularity and if that doesn’t bother you than [name]Violet[/name] is a beautiful name for a girl to grow up with.
I would personally go with [name]Clementine[/name]. Some think it’s just a bit too out there but I adore the name. It’s sweet, bubbly and has a cool vintage/British vibe that is stylish but not trendy. I know a young woman named [name]Clementine[/name] who is a year behind me in school. She carries the name well and has shaped it to fit her personality. I remember as a kid she went by [name]Clem[/name] or Cici and now she goes by [name]Clementine[/name] in full. So, my vote favors [name]Clementine[/name]. But in the end it’s about what you love the most!
I vote [name]Clementine[/name]! I want to name my daughters [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] :]
Could you spend one day calling her [name]Clementine[/name] and one day calling her [name]Violet[/name] and see which one feels right?
both are lovely names…I slightly prefer [name]Violet[/name]…
would make a great sibset if you were to have another girl.
let us know what you decide (:
I absolutely love the name [name]Clementine[/name], I know a girl called [name]Clementine[/name] who goes by Mem, I think it sounds beautiful. [name]Violet[/name] is a bit more popular, though it also sounds pretty. I prefer [name]Clementine[/name] to [name]Violet[/name] but both are great names.
if [name]Violet[/name] is #144, then I don’t think it is very popular! These things can be regional, too.
Not a fan of [name]Clementine[/name] (nice in French) but in English it reminds me of the fruit – I think calling small oranges “clemintines” is a N. American phenomena??? Would be okay in the UK.
I like both of these names! I think it depends on the last name and middle names… [name]Clementine[/name] is cute, but I’m not crazy about the nicknames, but I wouldn’t hesitate to choose it if its what you love. I prefer [name]Violet[/name] just slightly.
