Code Names?

This is a sci-fi story that I’m thinking of. I won’t actually get to writing this for a while but it’s always good to have some ideas.

It’s about an alien species, sort of robots, but they’re capable of feeling emotions like love and happiness. Their planet is friendly and kind, to say the least. However, that does not mean that they can’t feel complex emotions. They can. In fact they understand their emotions very well.

That was their origin story. I’m not going to reveal much about the story in case my friends decide to snoop around (they’re the primary audience). Basically they come to earth, adopt human-like features and names and slowly adapt to their surroundings in different cities. I have decided what to name them when they come to Earth, however I’m still wondering if their names on Earth should be different than the names they had on their home planet.

  • Have the same name for both planets
  • Have different names for different planets

What I have in mind right now is a really blurry image of what the code names should be like. For eg: A Grayson on earth could go by G-4729766. I’m not too sold on this.

Any ideas?

I guess this is what you call a bump?

Seeing as they feel emotions and understand them very well, from a human standpoint it would make more sense if they had names. However, you could make the names a little more unique on their home planet by transforming their [name_f]Earth[/name_f] names into numbers. For example, [name_u]Aria[/name_u] would be 4R14, and [name_u]Grayson[/name_u] could be 6R4Y50N. It could be pronounced the same, or if you want it to be a more complicated you could have special pronounciations for the numbers.

Since several letters don’t have corresponding numbers, you could still use some letters in there. But it would allow for a bit of creativity on the home planet while still maintaining an easy-to-follow naming situation (you don’t want readers confused as to who each robot is!) It may be a bit difficult to read at first but if you read enough numbers-for-letters it does get easier.
