I recommend doing some research on the name [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] first. I’m not 100% sure what it was exactly, so look it up.

Please, I beg of you, search the forums for the name [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] before using this spelling. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time this name comes up the discussion gets heated very fast. Please use [name_m]Coen[/name_m].

[name_m]Coen[/name_m] would be far less controversial.

Neither is ideal, in my opinion. Are you are aware of the controversy surrounding [name_m]Cohen[/name_m]?

Also, I’d like to point out that [name_m]Coen[/name_m], the Dutch name, is properly pronounced ā€˜KOON’.

[name_m]Coen[/name_m] would undoubtedly be the more conscientious choice. You could even consider Cohan, Cowan, [name_m]Koen[/name_m]?

I am not saying anything that has not been said, but please really think about the name [name_m]Cohen[/name_m].

I’m calling troll.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Owen[/name_u], [name_m]Bowen[/name_m], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]? or [name_u]Colby[/name_u], Codin, [name_u]Corbin[/name_u]?

I hope you’re a troll for your son’s sake. Go with [name_m]Coen[/name_m].

I don’t think she is a troll. I get the impression that she isn’t aware of the controversy behind [name_m]Cohen[/name_m], or perhaps she isn’t concerned about it.

Some strange comments here and no I’m not a troll! Me and my family are not religious so I don’t concern myself with any controversy especially as I’ve never come across such controversy in the UK.

The name is only on my list of possibles but the hate has put me right off. Thanks.

I am from the UK, and it’d still be offensive here.

I think [name_m]Coen[/name_m] is very handsome.

People need to realize not everyone is a name expert, and people come here casually to ask for advice. 90% of the population have probably never even heard of the name or the controversy. I didn’t learn about it till nameberry, and no one I know would know of it.

Geez.

If you wanted to pick one, pick [name_m]Coen[/name_m].

The hate is all yours – even if you refuse to acknowledge an act of antisemitism, or act in disgustingly irresponsible ignorance, it’s still antisemitism. It is viscerally upsetting that even on this poll, so many people thought [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] would be preferable to [name_m]Coen[/name_m] (which, as another commenter pointed out, isn’t even pronounced the way you think it is). I can tell you for a fact that gentiles tearing the name [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] from Jews and slapping it on their goy kids is ā€œcontroversialā€ everywhere. It isn’t okay ANYWHERE. As a practicing Jew, if I met a child named [name_m]Cohen[/name_m], I would tell him exactly what I thought of his parents (nothing good).

You need to take it down SEVERAL notches. As someone above pointed out, not everyone is aware of the stigma attached to the name. I myself used to love this name when I was a little girl. It wasn’t until I got on Nameberry (many, many years later) and looked up the name that I realized it was so offensive. [name_f]Do[/name_f] I still love the name? Yup.

Can we please have this tread locked? The original poster obviously had no idea about the controversy of the name. No need to belittle her. A simple ā€œPlease do your research.ā€ would have been enough.

I am going to refrain from locking the thread at this point as I feel that ongoing civilized discussion of this issue can be useful. But please, let’s have more light and less heat on the subject.
