I have really been thinking about using [name]Collins[/name] as a first name. It’s my maiden name. My dad is an only child and my brother does not want any children, so the family line will end with us. My DD’s name is [name]Lilah[/name] and I’m wondering if this would be too masculine paired with her name. We don’t have a middle name picked but if I were to use this I would pick something that is clearly a girls name. I know the trend on here is to not like boy names on girls so please be honest but not mean.
I don’t really mind boys names on girls (depending on the name), but I would personally save [name]Collins[/name] for a future son? Because [name]Lilah[/name] is more feminine, if I saw the name [name]Collins[/name] I would assume it would be a boy, especially next to your daughters name. But, if you love the name, then I wouldn’t let peoples opinions stop you!
The name [name]Collin[/name] means “people of victory” so would you be interested in using a name with a similar meaning to honor that?
[name]Nicole[/name] means “victory of the people”
[name]Collette[/name] means “victory of the people”
[name]Veronica[/name] means “bringing victory”
[name]Kinsey[/name] means “kings victory”
I love [name]Collins[/name]! I don’t think it’s like jarring with [name]Lilah[/name] because to me it isn’t really masculine. I think it’s very pretty especially if you paired it with a more overtly feminine name. Something like [name]Collins[/name] [name]Olivia[/name] or [name]Collins[/name] [name]Claire[/name] even [name]Collins[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I don’t really see it as a boys name at all, if someone told me they had a friend name [name]Colin[/name] I’d think boy (obviously) but [name]Collins[/name] I automatically think girl.
Aside from being blatantly masculine, i think it looks really really odd next to [name]Lilah[/name], I would assume brother and sister, not two sisters. I would keep it in the middle, it’s very traditional to use maiden names / family surnames in the middle.
I think [name]Collins[/name] is refreshing and very cute! I can totally picture it on a girl, and it makes an especially adorable sibset with [name]Lilah[/name]. I think that with the right middle name it could be perfect!
I absolutely love [name]Collins[/name] on a girl, especially since its your maiden name. If it’s your maiden name, anything goes! Despite [name]Lilah[/name] being very girly and [name]Collins[/name] being more unisex, they share similar sounds so i think they still go great together.
Ps: In the movie The Blind Side with [name]Sandra[/name] Bullock, the daughters name is [name]Collins[/name] - since [name]Leigh[/name] [name]Anne[/name] Tuohy, the woman played by [name]Sandra[/name] Bullock, had [name]Collins[/name] as her maiden name. So it isn’t unheard of on a girl!
If you didn’t already have a daughter named [name]Lilah[/name], I would love [name]Collins[/name] for you. [name]Lilah[/name] and [name]Collins[/name] would almost always be mistaken for a sister and brother though. Is there a part of [name]Lilah[/name]'s name that’s as equally significant as [name]Collins[/name]? In your position, I would use [name]Collins[/name] as your daughter’s middle name or save it for a boy.
Honestly, this is a hard question to answer. You’re the only person who can decide if [name]Collins[/name]'s significance outweighs the major stylistic clash with [name]Lilah[/name].
I love [name]Collins[/name]! The Southerner in me adores the use of unexpected surnames as first names (Oh how I wish [name]Collins[/name] or [name]Philips[/name] was one of my family names!)
If you didn’t have a [name]Lilah[/name], I wouldn’t hesitate. However, as another poster mentioned, [name]Collins[/name] isn’t uber masculine so it isn’t jarring next to [name]Lilah[/name]
And I have to disagree with the others. [name]Collin[/name] is boring and common on a boy so I’d only use [name]Collins[/name] for a girl.
I’m not a fan of surnames as first names (especially on a girl), but [name]Collins[/name] and [name]Lilah[/name] could work if you are set on the family meaning. [name]Collins[/name] would make a fab middle name imo. The only variations on [name]Collins[/name] I can think of are [name]Colleen[/name] and [name]Colette[/name] or perhaps even [name]Corinne[/name].
Thanks for the input. We are keeping the gender a surprise, and have talked about using [name]Collins[/name] as a first name if the baby is a boy. I just really feel sad that my name is going to end with this generation and that’s why I was thinking about using it as a girls first name. It is still on the table to use as a middle name for either boy or girl, b/c [name]Lilah[/name]'s MN is DH’s grandmother’s mother. I’m going to have to con’t to think about it.
I know a college-age girl named [name]Collins[/name], and it fits her perfectly. She is beautiful and feminine, and on her the name doesn’t read as masculine at all, just unique and memorable. We live in the South, though, so it is fairly common for girls to have their mother’s maiden name as their first name.
This is a very common practice in the South; girls are either given the maiden name as their first name or as a double with a classic name such as [name]Mary[/name] or [name]Anne[/name]. They’re either called “[name]Anne[/name] [name]Collins[/name]” or simply “[name]Collins[/name].” I personally know a [name]Reynolds[/name], [name]McKee[/name], and a [name]Davis[/name] by this route.
I like the notion of a core-classic first name paired with [name]Collins[/name], and just using “[name]Collins[/name].” In the South at least it wouldn’t be seen as unusual next to [name]Lilah[/name].
I’ve loved [name]Collins[/name] on a girl since I saw The Blind Side! So unexpected but cute. I wish I lived in the South and had a good maiden name to give my daughter. I would hesitate to use it in your case though, since [name]Lilah[/name] is so feminine and [name]Collins[/name] is surnamey/masculine.
Oh I looove it! [name]Collins[/name] is wonderful!! Family names are so important. [name]Don[/name]'t let anyone change your mind. I have a friend who named her daughter using her mother’s maiden name…Carder. She is absolutely a Carder and your little one would be a spot on [name]Collins[/name]! It is adorable and just perfect.
[name]Collins[/name] is adorable!! I think [name]Collins[/name] and [name]Lilah[/name] sound awesome for sisters. I personally don’t think siblings names need to match or sound good together as long as you love the names.
