6/30 Update:

It’s time to retire this thread and go back to the drawing board. We don’t seem to have a first name that really resonates for both parents. We both agree that we really like Constance, but more as a middle name, and we like Rose as a second-middle since the older kids are on such a cute campaign for it. These are definitely NOT the middle names we thought were “priority” when we started out at all… but they seem to have emerged as the ones we really love.

I’ll start a new message soon. It’s not very usual for us to have the middle names picked out first, but hey, every name hunt is different! Thanks for all the feedback, discussion, and ideas along the way!

Our two older boys have decided that we should name the baby Rose, so she will be Rose Tyler like on Doctor Who. They told me all about it last evening: clearly they have spent some time thinking this over. The levels of “adorable” and “cute” were just about enough to kill me of overdose, lol. Their second choice is Zelda; which, they say, is definitely not too close to Z e p h a n, and they say if her name is Zelda then we have to put her hair in three braids and get her a dress like the video game character’s. LOL - they pretty much made my day. I may just try a little harder to work in Rose as the second-middle name, just because it’s so cute how much they want it.

Is Zelda-Rose as nerdy as I think it is? Yes, but not obvious unless you know it’s video games and Doctor Who? It seems really nerdy to me, lol. My husband saw this idea scrawled on one of my scrap pages, and he brought it up after I told him what the boys advised me to name the baby. (Wow… there is a Muppet named Zelda Rose too, lol). Should I move this one into consideration, or just leave it as an amusing passing idea?

I’ve decided that I’m definitely going to work on finding a great combo for Rowenna. Also, re-address the Constance combos and have that option available.

Rowenna Constance Rose - I think this one pulls the names that we really want the most. Still don’t know what to do about the MIL situation since Constance is an honor name for my dad, but so many of the combos that use the honors for both grandparents feel forced, but I’m still open to ideas. I like this one because it feels strong but feminine, like the name of the intelligent princess who is smart enough to figure out how to defend her land.

Rowenna Colanthe Rose - this one gets in two family honors from my side, which I like, but maybe it’s just a touch on the flowery side.

Rowenna Autumn Rose - just to be all fall-like with names my husband likes.

I really don’t have any combos that use any of the Peggy Jean names. Ideas on that, or thoughts on the above? Seems like I probably have to “lose” one of the middle names to fit in the MIL name… in which case I guess it could be an option to use Rose as a nn for Rowenna. I’m really liking Rowenna as-is though.

Going back to the list of Constance ideas, I like these best today… opinions or other ideas?

I might possibly reconsider something like Iselda Rose _____, nn Zelda-Rose, because Iselda would technically pull in the meaning from Ethan and give me the “Dad Honor” name (thus clearing up space to add in a MIL honor). On the other hand, I rather like the look of Zelda-Rose better than Iselda Rose _____, so I don’t know.

Zuzia [name_f]Petra[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f]! I’m really rooting for Zuzia…or [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]. Zuzia is so sweet, spunky, unique, and it has my favorite nns. I’ve already elaborated on my issues with [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is very ‘Opie’ (and Dopey) to me, and also in the ‘[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]’ category of names, sound-wise. I just do not see the appeal. But obviously I’m in the vast minority here. [name_f]Quilla[/name_f] is kind of cute, and I like it in your set, but the way my mind goes to Killa does bother me some.

I think that IM-a-jin is actually correct, I don’t object to saying it im-ah-jean (yes, the Berries can cringe now).

Quilla Hermione Rose is pretty gorgeous, but seems very Harry Potter to me, since Hermione’s daughter’s name is Rose and the students at Hogwarts use quills to use their homework. Something in a similar style would be Quilla Penelope Ja(y)ne.

I think Zuzia Constance is pretty great as is. I also like the idea of adding Pearl of it so you can honor both the grandparents you want to.

Out of the two Scarlett combos you’re currently looking at, I like Scarlett Iselda Mairead better, pairing the very common Scarlett with two rather obscure middles. I adore Serafina, just not paired with Scarlett, which makes it feel like an even “redder” name if that makes sense. (I mean, Scarlett obviously means “red” anyway, but Seraphina means “fiery”, so, yeah, it’s a very colorful combo.)

And I really like both the current Opal combos: Opal Ivana Constance and Opal Iselda Jane. Can’t really decide which I like better!

Good substitute idea (I like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] better, anyway) or I suppose just swapping the [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] would be improvement. I agree that some of these combos really are nicer with just one middle, though adding the [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is a good suggestion to squeeze the [name_f]MIL[/name_f] honor in. We have always just chosen our favorite name, and we [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] some of the names that would honor my dad — but I’m feeling some pressure since [name_f]MIL[/name_f] would be the only grandparent “left out” and we’re not counting on there being a “next time” anymore.

If the [name_f]Opal[/name_f] combos are tied, then I guess they are both winners! Thanks.

I worked on an [name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_f]Annika[/name_f] ____ combo for quite awhile and finally gave it up. [name_m]Just[/name_m] needed some new perspective! [name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_f]Mairead[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is kind of adorable. Actually, I like all of these suggestions, though they aren’t quite the feel that seems like “us.” You are very talented!

I am not a combo wizard or anything, so I’m just going to throw in my 2 cents worth!
I love [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] with your older girls names (E & D if I’m correct), and since it’s one of your husband’s favourites, I’d go for it! My suggestion: [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f]. Ok, it may not be as exciting as some other options, but it is really pretty.
[name_f]Petra[/name_f] - honours your [name_f]MIL[/name_f] and your father. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] adds to honouring your [name_f]MIL[/name_f], even though it’s in front of [name_f]Petra[/name_f] - you just rearranged it a bit. I think the combos all sound so much better with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] before [name_f]Petra[/name_f] because you lose the repeating “ra” sound ([name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f]) (or just plain a like Zuzia [name_f]Petra[/name_f]) and the syllable count is a bit nicer too.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] - I’m sorry to your husband, but I just really really prefer [name_f]Jane[/name_f] spelt [name_f]Jane[/name_f] not [name_f]Jayne[/name_f]. I think the y makes it look tacky and almost unisex. You lose the class and elegance of [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

I agree that [name_f]Quilla[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is stunning, but have to go with pp and say it’s way over the top [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. I didn’t notice the [name_f]Quilla[/name_f]/Quills part but [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] was a bit too much. You have so many names on your list. If I were you, I would go through them, cross out the ones you like a bit less and narrow down your options a bit. There will be lots of beautiful combos with so many name options, but you want the combo that is the most meaningful and is the most beautifully made up of names you adore. So by crossing out a few of the names that you don’t like as much, you’ll be that much closer to finding one you love.

@waverly123 - Thanks for your detailed response, I’ve gone over all of it a couple of times. I think you’re probably right about ALL those middle options, so I’m working on weeding it down a bit, and thanks for offering your opinions on what I have in the list.

[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Petra[/name_f] is a nicer flow, you’re right. [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] are essentially the same name, so it doesn’t much matter about the PJ initials anyway, and yes, it’s a solid choice when it comes down to it.

[name_f]Quilla[/name_f] - thank you for commenting on the existing combo and about the name itself. I think that this one is really still here as a compromise choice, should other options fall through.

[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] I have had on my list for years and I never can get Hubby to approve it. Go figure. [name_f]Mairead[/name_f] sounds a bit like muh-[name_u]RED[/name_u] or may-[name_u]RED[/name_u], which, come to think of it, is very not good after [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]. Out goes that combo. I like your suggestion of [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] Iselda [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], the repeating Ls are subtle but unifying.

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_f]Junia[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is a super adorable, by I sort of went all dyslexic one of the time I glanced over it and saw [name_f]Opal[/name_f] Luny Juicy, lol. Thank you for your detailed comments on each of the [name_f]Opal[/name_f] combos. I admit that it’s my favorite first so I’m just trying to put together a few combo options for my husband to pick from.

I think someone suggested [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Juno[/name_f], or the reverse, but it’s a bit much on the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] and Greek ladies for me when they are put all together. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Imogene[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is really a nice combo and I put it on the “consider” list. Could have fooled me that combos aren’t your thing, because you came up with some really nice ones. Thank you.

@truenature - You’re on Team Both Parents! [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is Hubby’s favorite and [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is definitely emerging as my pick. I think that Zuzia, [name_f]Quilla[/name_f], and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] are the runners up in this game, but I might as well do combos on them while I’m at it.

Iverine is a name from my side, so I don’t think it would work as the [name_f]MIL[/name_f] name, she wouldn’t think it was legit. :stuck_out_tongue: [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f], um… I think my sister had it on her list. My husband is finicky about the F names.

[name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] is really a mouthful but it combines all the front-runners so it goes on the list. Hubby likes [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] too, so a maybe on [name_f]Opal[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] Iselda.

I love a lot of these, but I can tell they will just make his eyes pop out, like EEEEEEK Zuzia [name_f]Zorica[/name_f] [name_u]Jael[/name_u]!! So amazing, and you do not mess with her, ha! [name_f]Opal[/name_f] Iselda [name_f]Zorica[/name_f] is superawesome too but I bet it would be a tough sell. Palakika doesn’t work wherever I try it, and it’s too bad, it’s so cute and has a cute meaning, but it sure is a bear. I think it has to be one of those “surprise” middles that comes after a tame first like [name_f]Louise[/name_f].

I know the last think you probably need is more suggestions, but I came across a name today that I thought might fit your style and would also be a good honor name for the [name_f]MIL[/name_f]: [name_f]Penina[/name_f]! Not only is it a P name for [name_f]Peggy[/name_f], but it also means “pearl”, just like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. I rather like it with [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]. [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_f]Penina[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f], maybe?

Hmm, I have to admit that I think [name_f]Quilla[/name_f] [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] flows better than [name_f]Quilla[/name_f] [name_f]Constance[/name_f] [name_f]Emily[/name_f] on its own, but a lot also depends on the last name, too. (And I’m not a huge fan of alliteration, which may be coloring my opinion.)

BTW, heads up on Opal Emily Autumn – it’s another gorgeous combo, but there’s a singer named Emilie Autumn you might want to be aware of. (I’m loving Opal Seraphine Lucy/Opal Serafina Lucy, though! And Opal Aurora Constance is pretty smashing, too.)

I saw the two suggested together a couple times already. I also would not use [name_f]Opal[/name_f] with [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] because it just seems silly. [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is cool - I am reminded of [name_m]Fire[/name_m] Opals, which are my favourite kind!
