I am pregnant with a boy and we are choosing between [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Michael[/name_m]. [name_m]Both[/name_m] are family names and we will use one as a FN and one as a MN.
Lets say you had to choose one as a FN, which one would you choose?
I know they are both common but I like the idea of using a spunky and uncommon nickname with a classic/traditional FN.
Which nicknames do you like? I know some of them are a bit of a stretch.
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]:
[name_u]Toby[/name_u] or [name_u]Tobi[/name_u] (Can a boy’s name have an ‘i’ on the end? With the ‘i’, it would be the same letters as his dad’s nn but switched around)
[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] (his initials would be TD)
[name_m]Tom[/name_m] or [name_m]Thom[/name_m] (But this seems like such a big name for a baby, even though it is so short lol)
[name_u]Tate[/name_u]
[name_m]Ty[/name_m]
T or Tee
[name_m]Moss[/name_m] (from ‘mas’)
[name_m]Michael[/name_m]:
[name_m]Mick[/name_m]
[name_u]Mickey[/name_u]
[name_m]Mack[/name_m]
Chael (‘ch’ sound)
[name_m]Cael[/name_m] (‘k’ sound)
[name_u]Micah[/name_u] (although I’m 99% sure my SO will not let me use this)
[name_f]Mika[/name_f] (‘mee-kuh’)
I would rather not use [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] or [name_m]Mike[/name_m] as nicknames because they have already been used in our families. Can you think of any others that would work? It doesn’t matter if they are a bit of a stretch. It would probably be just a family nickname anyway.
Thank you so much for your help or any nickname suggestions.
I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] nn [name_u]Tate[/name_u] and [name_m]Micheal[/name_m] nn [name_m]Mack[/name_m]. Really cute nn ideas for traditional names. Good luck!
My dad’s name is [name_m]Tom[/name_m] and he went by [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] and T until he graduated from HS. My mom still calls him T (they met in HS) and his siblings still call him [name_m]Tommy[/name_m]. I’m probably partial to those nicknames for that reason. But you could call your son whatever you want for any reason-- formal names are for birth certificates & diplomas. I know people with all sorts of crazy nicknames. Pick whichever name strikes you.
If you don’t mind going foreign, [name_u]Misha[/name_u]/[name_u]Mischa[/name_u] is a nickname for [name_m]Michael[/name_m] in Russian and [name_u]Mikko[/name_u] (mee-ko) is a nickname used in Finland (I think).
I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Michael[/name_m], too. I love the full [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], which I find so classic and unexpected as it is. (I met a baby [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] a couple years ago and found it so utterly refreshing!) I love pretty much every one of your nns for [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], though–[name_u]Teddy[/name_u], [name_u]Toby[/name_u], [name_u]Tate[/name_u], [name_m]Moss[/name_m], etc.! If you go with [name_m]Michael[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], though, I have to say [name_u]Micah[/name_u] is my favorite. But if you’re open for more options, I like [name_m]Michael[/name_m] nn [name_m]Cole[/name_m]. It’s a bit of a stretch, but I still like it.
babyninja143 - Thanks. I’m glad you like [name_u]Tate[/name_u]. I didn’t think anyone would like that one.
collmcc523 - Thank you. I’m starting to warm up to [name_m]Tom[/name_m].
valerie2 - I think I am leaning toward [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Michael[/name_m]. Thank you.
apollonia - Thanks. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see another vote for [name_u]Tate[/name_u] and [name_m]Mack[/name_m].
sllah - Thank you. I like the sound of Mich but I worry about the pronunciation problems.
celphd - I actually love [name_u]Misha[/name_u]/[name_u]Mischa[/name_u] as a nn but the baby’s last name will be Spanish and we don’t have anyone that is of Russian decent in our families. I love [name_u]Mikko[/name_u] (or [name_f]Miko[/name_f]) too. I might be able to get by with at one. I’m adding it to the list. Thank you.
ashthedreamer - Thank you so much for your comments. I’m happy to hear that you found [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] refreshing. At first, I thought it was too common but the family significance means so much to me.
I prefer [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] as a first name with nn [name_m]Thom[/name_m] (makes me think of tiny [name_m]Tom[/name_m] Thumb = cute), [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], and [name_m]Moss[/name_m]. If you went with [name_m]Michael[/name_m], [name_m]Mick[/name_m] is my absolute fave nn for this classic, but since you mentioned his Spanish last name, what about [name_m]Miguel[/name_m]?
I would choose [name_m]Michael[/name_m] in a hot minute.
[name_m]Mick[/name_m] is my favourite NN, [name_m]Mack[/name_m] is fine, [name_u]Angel[/name_u] would amuse me but probably wouldn’t be his NN in school, [name_m]Doc[/name_m] because his initials would be MD. (You can smack me for that…). [name_u]Mal[/name_u] seems workable all the way to adulthood. I like [name_u]Micah[/name_u] but I don’t think of it as the same as [name_m]Michael[/name_m].
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is Top Ten here in Australia, and I know a lot of little Thomases. I don’t know any tiny Michaels.
