Common ground? Please help

Thanks in advance.

My husband and I have different naming styles, so am hoping with your suggestions we can find a few common ground names that we both [name_f]LOVE[/name_f]!

To give you an idea of our styles…

His favorites:
[name_m]Jim[/name_m] (he would have been okay with james, but we can’t use it because it is a close nephew’s name)
[name_m]Steve[/name_m] (not [name_m]Steven[/name_m] or [name_m]Stephen[/name_m]. He doesn’t like those)
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] (I used to be okay on this one, but not so much anymore)
[name_m]Jeff[/name_m] (not [name_m]Jeffrey[/name_m] or [name_m]Jefferson[/name_m]…he doesn’t like those.)
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] (can’t use…close nephew’s name)
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] (this is our top middle ground at the moment, but it doesn’t feel exactly right to me. He LOVES it. I like it.)
[name_m]Mark[/name_m]
[name_m]Brad[/name_m]
[name_m]Jason[/name_m] (I like, but not sure if it is the one)
…he tends to like shorter names. And ones I feel are 70s/80s names. He does not like “old man/grandpa” names.

My favorites (he doesn’t like any of these):
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u] (can’t use)
[name_m]Phillip[/name_m]
[name_m]Peter[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Gerrard[/name_m]
[name_m]Brandt[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Gabe[/name_m]
[name_m]Garrett[/name_m]
[name_m]Lewis[/name_m]
[name_m]Brooks[/name_m]
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]
[name_m]Roman[/name_m]
…I like shorter, solid names.

Other info…
We both like names that have one or two main spellings, names that are known (though I like less popular, in general), easy to pronounce & spell, and gender specific.

If it helps, our top girls’ names we love and can happily agree on are [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] and [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Kate[/name_f] for me and [name_f]Katie[/name_f] for him). [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is my favorite and [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] is his. (Other names we considered, and are still in consideration are [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], & [name_f]Alison[/name_f])

It sounds like he is only ok with the most all American names, names he’s always known and had friends of. Very safe! Does he like to try new foods or is he a meat and potatoes type of guy??

What about [name_m]Graham[/name_m] or [name_u]Owen[/name_u]?

Or a variant of some of his, like [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] or [name_m]Mateo[/name_m]/[name_m]Matteo[/name_m] (I don’t think you have to be Hispanic or Italian to use this name)?

You could try getting him to see [name_m]Brandt[/name_m] as a more interesting/less dated [name_m]Brad[/name_m]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Bram[/name_m]?

[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] is not bad, just a bit bland. I see a sweet little boy with this name though. Maybe you could pick a more adventurous middle name?

I agree with emsky’s suggestion of having a more adventurous middle name. As for some potential first names that are maybe more your husband’s style, I’ll put out:

[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_u]Brett[/name_u]
[name_m]Kurt[/name_m]
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m]
[name_u]Kyle[/name_u]
[name_m]Brian[/name_m]

I agree with the suggestions of mintcream, especially [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], and [name_u]Kyle[/name_u]. I would suggest [name_u]Jude[/name_u], [name_m]Caleb[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], and [name_m]Connor[/name_m].

[name]Jack[/name] seems to fit both of your criteria!

Emsky…he is a little more adventurous with his food :). I love [name_u]Owen[/name_u], but he doesn’t. I really like graham. I will bring it up with him. [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] might be an option too. Thanks!

Mintcream…love [name_m]Kurt[/name_m]! Like [name_u]Ryan[/name_u]! [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] is a great name, though another nephew’s name.

Acoker95…I really, really like [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]. Thanks! [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is great too, but my dear husband doesn’t like it. Says something about being a slang term. I even mentioned [name_m]John[/name_m] nn jack. He didn’t go for it.

[name_m]Aaron[/name_m]
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_m]Eric[/name_m]
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m]
[name_u]Shane[/name_u]
[name_m]Sean[/name_m]

Good luck! My husband and I are having similar issues, so I totally understand.

Midnightwriter…I do like [name_m]Eric[/name_m], nathan and [name_u]Evan[/name_u]. I like [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] as well, but we have a relative my husband isnt too keen on who is an [name_f]Erin[/name_f]. Thanks, it is hard to find common ground and we appreciate it!

You’re welcome. We’re trying to name our third boy, so we’ve done this same routine twice before.

Mmm this is a hard one! (So sorry for the repeats)!
[name_u]Lee[/name_u]
[name_m]Greg[/name_m]
[name_u]Nick[/name_u]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_m]Eric[/name_m]
[name_m]Mitch[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_m]Tim[/name_m]
[name_m]Martin[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]
[name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Tony[/name_u]
[name_m]Tom[/name_m]
[name_u]Shane[/name_u]
[name_u]Brett[/name_u]
[name_m]Travis[/name_m]
[name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u]
[name_m]Sean[/name_m]
[name_u]Joey[/name_u]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u]
[name_m]Zac[/name_m]
[name_m]Rick[/name_m]
[name_m]Ross[/name_m]
[name_m]Jake[/name_m]
[name_m]Scott[/name_m]
[name_u]Blake[/name_u]
[name_u]Kyle[/name_u]
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]
[name_u]Seth[/name_u]
[name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_m]Nate[/name_m]

Agreeing with above, [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is really good!

What about maybe [name_u]Tyler[/name_u] or [name_m]Luke[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]?

[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m], maybe? Or [name_u]Noah[/name_u]? [name_m]Jared[/name_m], [name_m]Joel[/name_m], [name_m]Nolan[/name_m], [name_u]Bradley[/name_u]?

Ella17… [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Mitch[/name_m]! Maybe [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] nn [name_m]Mitch[/name_m]…hmmm. [name_m]Greg[/name_m], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] and [name_u]Seth[/name_u] are nice too! Thanks!

Juatanamelover…love [name_m]Jared[/name_m] and [name_m]Joel[/name_m]! [name_m]Jared[/name_m] is awesome! Thanks!

Sorry if there are repeats but how about…

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_m]Brent[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]John[/name_m] ([name_m]Jack[/name_m] is a traditional nickname)
[name_m]Mark[/name_m]
[name_m]Justin[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_m]Alec[/name_m]
[name_m]Colin[/name_m]
[name_m]Gregory[/name_m]/[name_m]Greg[/name_m]
[name_m]Jeremy[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Sean[/name_m]
[name_m]Brendan[/name_m]

I really like the suggestions of [name_m]Jared[/name_m] and [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m]/[name_m]Mitch[/name_m].

some of my fave short, strong names:
[name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_m]Cael[/name_m]
[name_m]Michael[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]

i dont mind [name_m]Mitch[/name_m] but i would use the full name [name_m]Mitchell[/name_m] with nn [name_m]Mitch[/name_m].

My first thought was [name_m]Paul[/name_m]. Its short, which seems to appeal to both of you. Its a little dated - which he likes, but I think its actually timeless and strong. Also, [name_m]John[/name_m]. It sort of fits that same description. Good luck!

I like the new suggestions of [name_m]Alec[/name_m], [name_m]Paul[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] and william. Thanks!

[name_m]Boone[/name_m]
[name_m]Drake[/name_m]
[name_u]Shane[/name_u]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m]

[name_m]Peter[/name_m] is my favourite.
What about [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]?
Some of your husbands choices have a similar feel to yours so I’m sure you’ll find the one!
