Completely stuck!

[name]Hi[/name] all! We are having our second boy this summer. We haven’t discussed it a lot because neither of us can come up with many names we like. DS1 is named [name]Simon[/name] (a family name).

So far we have two ideas, both with some negatives (to us).
[name]Nathaniel[/name]-It is a nice, traditional name. It’s a family name. But–we’re not jumping for joy over it if you know what I mean? I like it, but…I’m just not sure. My husband seems indifferent. He wouldn’t mind if we use it or not.
[name]Max[/name]-Another family name. This is the one my husband likes and wants to use. BUT our last name starts with an S, which makes me not want to use it. We could do [name]Maxwell[/name], but I’m not really sure about that name (for us). [name]Maxfield[/name] is a family surname, so we could use that, but is it even a name?

I’m just stuck. Any ideas? One of these or something else? It doesn’t have to be a family name–that’s just all we’ve come up with. Thanks for any help!

[name]Nate[/name] is one of my favorite boy names and one that he would probably end up going by if you named him [name]Nathaniel[/name]. [name]Simon[/name] and [name]Nate[/name] make a cute pair. [name]Max[/name] is also nice. I don’t think you could go wrong, but without knowing the whole name it’s hard to comment on the surname.

Thanks! I think that’s my issue with [name]Nathaniel[/name]–I just can’t imagine saying it all the time. [name]Nate[/name] is cute and would solve that problem. [name]Both[/name] sound fine with our last name, except for [name]Max[/name] S… running together because of the X and S sounds.

I like [name]Nathaniel[/name] a lot! I’m guessing [name]Nathan[/name] is out of the running or you would have already considered it, but just in case let me propose it. I like [name]Simon[/name] and [name]Nathan[/name] together, and [name]Nathan[/name] still gets [name]Nate[/name].

[name]Maxfield[/name] could be a name! I always like family names. But it is a little out there as a fn, esp. with [name]Simon[/name], although since that is also a family name, that kind of balances it out. [name]Maxwell[/name] is perfectly nice, and to me is still sort of a family name by alluding to [name]Maxfield[/name]!

Could you do [name]Nathan/name [name]Maxfield[/name] S or [name]Maxfield[/name] [name]Nathan/name S, then when you meet him decide if [name]Nate[/name] or [name]Max[/name] suits him better?

It seems like you’re really inclined to consider family names – are there more you like?

Best wishes!

Thank you so muchfor your comments! Yeah, we’re not really considering [name]Nathan[/name], but it is a nice name. I like family names too–partly because it keeps me from having to pick a name out of the blue, and partly because I feel like it gives the name something extra, a connection or something.
Your solution would certainly solve my problem! Brilliant! But I should have said that I already have a middle name in mind–a family name I would like to use but don’t want to put as a first name. I have exhausted our list of family names and these were the only ones that seemed usable, lol. Seriously, what were my ancestors thinking? haha.

I’m biased because [name]Nathaniel[/name] was on my short list of boys’ names. I love that it means “gift of God” – not sure if name meanings have any role in what you will choose.

My former boss named her [name]Max[/name] “[name]Maximilian[/name].” It’s an awfully big name for a baby, I think, but it’s another option…

I would vote for [name]Nathaniel[/name]/[name]Nate[/name] too. I don’t think you can go wrong with that, especially since it’s a family name. I love the name [name]Simon[/name]. Some other random ideas: I think [name]Benjamin[/name]/[name]Ben[/name] sounds cute with [name]Simon[/name]. [name]Adam[/name] came to mind as a two-syllable match. [name]Sebastian[/name] if you’re into alliteration.

I am with you on [name]Nathaniel[/name]. It’s a nice enough name, but it doesn’t speak to me. My maiden name is [name]Simon[/name], so I like that name a lot! Here are my cousins’ names who are all Simons (AKA they “go” with [name]Simon[/name]).

[name]Zachary[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Jeffrey[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]

Hmm…a lot less boys than I thought, haha.

We were considering using [name]Simon[/name] as a mn. Here are some names we thought sounded nice with [name]Simon[/name]:

[name]Henry[/name]
[name]John[/name] or [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Cormac[/name] (nn [name]Mac[/name] or [name]Mack[/name])
[name]Theodore[/name] (nn [name]Tad[/name] or [name]Theo[/name])
[name]Edward[/name] (nn [name]Ned[/name])
I forget the rest right now.

I do like [name]Max[/name] or [name]Maxfield[/name], but I agree with you on the running together sound of the X and the S of your last name. I’d keep looking…

Oh, I love [name]Simon[/name]. Yes, [name]Maxfield[/name] is a name and it would be great to honour your family. Here are some suggestions for his sibling. [name]Hope[/name] you like one! All the best.
[name]Isaac[/name]

[name]Eli[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Vincent[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]

[name]Conrad[/name]
[name]Benedict[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Peter[/name]
[name]Daniel[/name]
[name]Laurence[/name]
[name]Philip[/name]
[name]Harvey[/name]

I love the name [name]Nathaniel[/name]. Nicknames [name]Nate[/name] and [name]Nat[/name] are both decent, too. I’m not a fan of [name]Max[/name], but that probably puts me in the minority. For some reason, I feel like it sounds a little spoiled or something.
[name]Simon[/name] is such a great name to start with, one I’m considering. Have you liked that name and gotten good responses to it? Are you in the US or UK ([name]Just[/name] wondering since it’s more common in the UK…)
Other names that go well with [name]Simon[/name]:
[name]Henry[/name], [name]Walter[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Oliver[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]Graham[/name]

Thank you! The meaning IS nice!
