Considering These Names

I just got a name book for the holidays and I just went through the girls section. I have narrowed it down to a lot of names that I’m considering adding to my list, but I not sure. To help me decide, I want honest opinions and pros/cons on the names. Thanks in advance.

Fun list! I mostly agree with everything @Greyblue said except that I don’t care for [name_f]Enid[/name_f] (it sounds very old-lady to me and just a bit ugly), [name_u]Poet[/name_u] and [name_u]Fable[/name_u] are too out there for me, and I do like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], [name_f]Phyllis[/name_f] and [name_f]Judy[/name_f]. I don’t know why those three sound “so out they’re in” to me and [name_f]Enid[/name_f] just sounds out :woman_shrugging:t2: Personal associations I guess. Also we considered [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] for a middle name and got TERRIBLE feedback, especially from our parents.

I could happily name about 20 babies from your list tomorrow!

Aberdeen - Angus
Ada - gorgeous retro-glam, instantly makes me think of old Hollywood, coiffed updo’s, black and white movie star pics.
Amari - tamari sauce
Anne - A bit prim.
Annie - overly twee and cutesy
Anouk - not keen but cool, doesn’t sound great in many accents
Anthea - not my pt but perhaps due a comeback?
Aoife - like, not a particularly ‘nice’ I.e pretty sound but that suits me.
Arbor - trees, not a bad association but not for me. Also sounds like harbour spoken with a dropped H (a feature of some UK accents).
Auden - not my taste.
Avalon - not my taste. Sounds very myth and legend, which sometimes I like but not in this case.
Bernadette - very dated, very Catholic.
Bobbie - too nicknamey
Bonnie - very twee and cutesy but have a soft spot.
Cadence - not generally a fan of ‘word’ names (with some exceptions)
Calliope - a bit much and dislike Callie
Calypso - see above
Ceridwen - very cool but doesn’t roll off the tongue. Dislike Ceri.
Edith - adore, the right amount of clunky
Millicent - stuffy and twee at once
Domino - overrated pizza
Doris - I’d love to love it but one to confine to the history books I think.
Dorothy - like
Echo - see words as names comment
Frances - staid and sensible, not in a good way.
Prue - an unpleasant sound to my ear.
Edie - adore
Eleanor - really lovely
Enid - matronly
Eunice - dislike, unpleasant sound to my ear.
Fable - not for me, but I’ll make an exception to the ‘words as names’ thing for this because I enjoy anything literary, it’s also a pleasant sounding word. I’d confine to middle only.
Fern - never liked this but again will make an exception for the lovely nature imagery.
Gwendolen - good, strong, no-nonsense, and Gwen is cute.
Gwyneth - even better, simultaneously soft and strong.
Harlow - I actually like this with an -e.
Hattie - dislike. Love Hettie though.
Holly - dislike and find dated.
Ingrid - chic. Adore
Jane - plain
Janis - reminds me of a body part. Like the Joplin reference, but don’t like the name.
Jo - incomplete
Jocelyn - not my thing but nice.
Josephine - see above
Joy - dislike although I like other virtue names (don’t like -oy sound).
Judy - retro, I’d actually love to see this make a comeback.
Laurel - not my thing, I find dull.
Leta - dislike
Lileas - lily-@#s
Lilith - Don’t like Lil-names but I’ll make an exception for this due to lit and legend
Lilo - blow up mattress
Linda - dated
Lois - cute, so nerdy it’s cool again.
Lorelei - not keen, fussy.
Maelys - sounds made up. Like how it looks on paper but don’t like May/Mae names.
Mabyn - see above
Marianne - (pronounce Mary-Anne) - don’t like this pronunciation, but like Marry-Anne
Marin - mirin
Maris - dislike
Marisol - dislike. Sounds like a medication for an embarrassing ailment.
Martha - not my thing but warm and pleasant.
Mavis - too dated and not one for a revival imo.
Mischa - lovely. Feminine but not princessy.
Nancy - very nice
Olwen - very nice
Oona - adore
Opal - very nice
Ottilie - too frilly for me.
Pepper - I really don’t get the current love for this.
Phyllis - the wrong kind of old lady name
Poet - like the literary thing and sound. Poem is the better word as name (what if they aren’t a poet?) but prefer the sound of Poet. Middle only.
Polly - plastics.
Primrose - very twee and quite hard (for me) to say but like it anyway
Rae - strongly dislike.
Robin - not my thing but nice
Scout - strongly dislike
Shiloh - dislike
Story - this one’s a step too far for me.
Tallulah - not on my list but always had a soft spot. Beautiful meaning, lilting and musical. Not a ‘serious’ sounding name but who cares.
Thea - dislike, very popular. Love the less popular Theia though.
Tillie - very cutesy and understand the ‘dogs name’ thing but I think it’s nice regardless.
Vesper - scooter. Strongly dislike
Violet - in the minority hating this. All I see/hear is violent.
Winifred - dislike - would think it cool to meet a little one though.
Winnie - strongly dislike
Winter - ok
Wynn - not keen

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] list!
These are my faves:
[name_u]Arbor[/name_u]
[name_f]Avalon[/name_f]
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_u]Fable[/name_u]
[name_u]Fern[/name_u]
[name_u]Harlow[/name_u]
[name_u]Holly[/name_u]
[name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_u]Robin[/name_u]
[name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]
I particularly like the soft sound of the ones ending in “o” (e.g. [name_u]Harlow[/name_u], Shiloh), and classic florals or nature names such as [name_u]Fern[/name_u], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], & [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. Also, I have to say that [name_f]Avalon[/name_f] & [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] are absolutely magical… Great finds!

Ok!

Aberdeen

I love this name. Pros: unusual and striking set of sounds in a girl’s name. Beautiful Scottish landscape imagery. Cons: it’s lack of familiarity as a person’s name means that she may be always having to repeat and spell it for others. (This is my son’s experience with his name - in spite of this he likes his name and I have no regrets )

Ada

Not a name I’ve warmed to myself but I can appreciate it for others and find it lovely when I see it in a combo. Pros: It has elegant simplicity. Cons: As a vintage name, reactions would be a mixture of finding it fabulous and old ladyish.

Amari

I think this name is gorgeous! Pros and cons are really two sides of the same coin - as an international name used for both genders it makes a great name for many people, but there’s also a lot to consider. I found a little summary here on the different cultures and ethnicities that the name pertains to, to be aware of - and you may well be already - to inform a decision on using this name: https://ohbabynames.com/all-baby-names/amari-3/

Aoife

Aoife is beautiful! Pros: it’s got those stunning and rare sound combinations. Cons: As a childcare worker in England who looked after an Aoife, I can vouch for the likelihood that outside of Ireland, no one will intuitively know how to say the name on reading it, and learning to spell it is a challenge that some people just won’t bother with :sob: My opinion is that it’s so lovely that it’s worth these drawbacks but you might want to ask Aoifes where you live what their experience has been!

Hattie

A favourite of mine since childhood. Pros: sweet and quirky! Cons: These years on NB reading opinions about giving a formal name for a child to use if they choose to want something more serious sounding than their nickname name have got to me with Hattie! I’ll preface this by saying I believe that name prejudice is there to be challenged and Hattie could command a boardroom should she want to! Her name has nothing to do with her skills. However, if you happen to like Harriet, Henrietta or Hazel Violet just as much as Hattie, then maybe consider having the best of both worlds, and go for a name that Hattie could be a nn for.

bonnie
cadence
dorothy
frances
prue
