Continuing the discussion from the Name Sage on our Baby Girl #3

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Ladies!

This may be slightly long… But if you are a name pro or name obsessed, I really could use the advice and I’d be so appreciative of everyone’s opinion. I was the gal who wrote the name sage for “[name_m]Long[/name_m] and Meaningful Girl Names” just last week. I have to be honest, the names suggested just aren’t my speed. They’re too out there ([name_f]Alaia[/name_f], [name_f]Amara[/name_f], [name_f]Calista[/name_f], [name_f]Lucasta[/name_f]) or just aren’t my personal style ([name_f]Anastasia[/name_f], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]). I feel bad saying that. But I really do need help with my list and so I’m feeling still unsure what I want to do…

Here’s a small snippet of our story, I’d really, really love some feedback on our list. I am definitely open to suggestions, but I feel like I’ve “seen it all” at this point so I am more or less fixed on narrowing and sorting through that list unless there’s something I’ve overlooked.

So here goes:
We like feminine names that not super popular but are also familiar enough to pronounce. Our girls are with [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Carina[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. Our baby girl’s name doesn’t have to have a nickname, but if it’s super long, I want to like the nickname so we could call all three girls without it being a mouthful. The meaning of a name is REALLY important to us. [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] is full of life (and she was our rainbow baby) and [name_f]Carina[/name_f] is love. We will probably go with a floral middle name like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] to tie in with her sisters’ names. Our last name starts with an L and ends with an ‘ee’ sound. Names like [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] would be hard to say.

Here are our favorites:

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] – We love that it means “good news” since this baby was a surprise blessing. It’s long enough to stand up to our daughters’ names. But [name_f]Eve[/name_f] and [name_f]Evie[/name_f] are too close to [name_f]Viviana[/name_f]’s nickname, [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]. [name_f]Lina[/name_f] seems close to [name_f]Carina[/name_f]. Is there another option I’m not thinking of?

[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] – The meanings listed – “white wave” or “woman of the people” don’t appeal to us but the name is definitely my style. Again, nicknames could be an issue, but I love the sound of [name_f]Ginny[/name_f].

[name_f]Celia[/name_f] – It means heavenly, which I love since this baby is definitely “heaven sent”, and nicknames wouldn’t be a problem since we’d probably stick with the full name [name_f]Celia[/name_f]. But is it too soft, or too different from our older daughters’ names or is it just different enough to be the perfect fit? It has been the front runner for me so far…

We’ve also considered [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (the meaning was a problem with this one), [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] (worried about popularity), [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] (not in love with the nicknames yet), [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (still pondering this one and possible nicknames and if the meaning fits our story enough), [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (love this but is it too different from our sibset so far), and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f].

Thank you so very much for any and all opinions on our list. I just feel like I’m spinning in circles. I need an outsider’s perspective at this point on what sounds good together and what meanings fit our beautiful surprise girl on the way who we feel so happy and blessed to welcome.

From your options I love [name_f]Celia[/name_f]! In my opinion it fits very well with [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] and [name_f]Carina[/name_f]. I especially love the combination of [name_f]Celia[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I also like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] a lot for you. I’m not personally a fan of [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], although they are fine names objectively and I think they’d fit right in with their sisters’s names. What about [name_f]Eva[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], and [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] for [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]?

What about…

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] - golden
[name_f]Juliette[/name_f] - youthful
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] - heavenly
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] or [name_f]Catalina[/name_f] - pure
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - wise
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] - combination of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] (grace) and belle (beautiful)
[name_f]Mireille[/name_f] or [name_f]Mireya[/name_f] - admirable
[name_f]Elisa[/name_f] or [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] -
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] - happiness
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - she who brings joy
[name_f]Valerie[/name_f], [name_f]Valeria[/name_f] or [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - strong
[name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Elena[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] - light
[name_f]Annora[/name_f] - honor
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] or [name_f]Estella[/name_f] - star
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Adelina[/name_f] - noble
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] or [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] - most holy
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] or [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] - free woman
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - God will add
[name_f]Elisa[/name_f] or [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] - oath of God
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] - lily
[name_f]Althea[/name_f] - with healing power
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - strong
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] - God is my power
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f] or [name_f]Nadine[/name_f] - hope
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] or [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] - botanical names

Viviana, Carina and…

To me, Genevieve and Evangeline both go really nicely if you’re OK with them being almost derivative or mash ups of the first two names. I personally wouldn’t use them because they seem too close to and competitive with Viviana but if it’s comforting to have that consistency then go either - Genevieve is closer to Viviana but it also has the consonant start and a v different nickname which I think works better than Evangeline. Also Evangeline is far more likely to get Evie at some point no matter what other name you set which are mostly not great - eg Van, Jelly, maybe Annie (and Lina is far from the best parts of the name!).

As for other options in order of preference:

  • Susannah: excellent choice, love this name and its nickname potentials (Suri, Zuri, Suki, Zannah) if you need one at all. It’s as pretty as your others.
  • Celia - part of my doesn’t like that it’s a C start though it’s a soft C, and it somehow doesn’t flow as well after Carina but it is pretty, elegant and meaningful, and a fabulous choice. I also really like Cecilia (a tad more than Celia) and Celeste (though hard to get nicknames)
  • Adelaide has been shortened to Daisy on here, Daisy has such a nice meaning too but obv a flower with Violet middle
  • Aurora goes well with the rhythm of your others, I just don’t like saying the name (I swallow it).
  • Scarlett is harsh and doesn’t have good nicknames, I prefer Charlotte (Lottie) but that’s even more popular.

Random others (but haven’t checked for meaning):

Dahlia
Georgina
Sophia
Delphine (nn Phina)
Zara
Josephine (Phina, Josie, Posey)
Helena (Lainey or Lena)
Anneka

I really like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] for you - it has a nice meaning and works with your girls! [name_f]Eva[/name_f] could be another nickname and I don’t think that’s too close to [name_f]Vivi[/name_f]. [name_u]Angie[/name_u], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f]?
I also really like [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]

Some other ideas (Sorry if they aren’t quite up what you’re looking for)

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (bright and shining) - might not need a nickname but [name_f]Bee[/name_f] is an option

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - bringer of joy - [name_f]Trixie[/name_f], [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_u]Tris[/name_u]

[name_f]Nadia[/name_f] (hope)

[name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f] (happiness) [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u], [name_f]Ettie[/name_f]

[name_f]Sienna[/name_f] - a little like [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] but less popular?

I love your daughters’ names and I really love most of your options. The only one that strikes me as fitting less overtly than the others is [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f].

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the nickname [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], maybe occasionally affectionately called [name_f]Ginger[/name_f]. Would you use [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] as nicknames for [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] or [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]? I’ve also known a young woman who went by [name_f]Ginna[/name_f] and it suited her nicely,

I love [name_f]Celia[/name_f] and think it works fine with the sisters. I don’t think you need a nickname, but you could use [name_f]Cece[/name_f].

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] could go by [name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Delia[/name_f] or [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], if you wanted to stretch. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is great. I love [name_f]Suki[/name_f], [name_f]Suzu[/name_f], and [name_f]Zanna[/name_f] for short. I think [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] works too nn [name_f]Nell[/name_f] or [name_f]Polly[/name_f] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f].

I think my favorite option for you might be [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] with [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] in and Celia second place. Oh, but I love Susannah too. Good luck!!!

Genevieve Dahlia
Genevieve Laurel
Genevieve Magnolia
Evangeline Holly
Celia Violet
Susannah Violet

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] from PP, though not sure if too much L for last name?!

  1. My immediate thought was to use [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]! Check out the comment section for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]'s page on NB. There is one comment about a girl with that exact situation: [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]. And I totally adore it

  2. I do have a few suggestions, as well. I will start with 3 that are on the more familiar side.

[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]

  1. Okay, now for 3 that are slightly wilder (but still totally usable, imo).

[name_f]Adira[/name_f] - strong. [name_m]How[/name_m] beautiful is live, love, and strength?
[name_f]Asha[/name_f] - hope. Which again, is a gorgeous meaning
[name_f]Graciella[/name_f] - may be too bold for your taste, but I thought it would be worth a try! I know a girl with this name, and the allusion to grace seems like it could be a nice fit for your family. It also shares sounds with [name_f]Celia[/name_f], but is slightly stronger and more distinct from [name_f]Carina[/name_f].

Good luck!!!

[name_f]Celia[/name_f] is my favourite for your from your choices. [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is my second favourite. There are so many nickname possibilities for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]! [name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] are some I can think of at the moment (not including [name_f]Eva[/name_f]/[name_f]Eve[/name_f]/[name_f]Evie[/name_f]/[name_f]Lina[/name_f]).

Although I like [name_f]Celia[/name_f] it doesn’t feel quite right with the sisters’ names to me. Also I love [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] and like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] but would discount them with sister [name_f]Viviana[/name_f].

I like all of [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and think they would all go very well. You really have some great options here already.

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] as a nn, and think [name_f]Addie[/name_f] is nice too.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - lots of good nn options - I particularly like [name_m]Pip[/name_m], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] and [name_f]Nell[/name_f]. It is not too different from your sibset - in fact, I think it is a great match. Style and feel is just right, and there’s something about a consonant-heavy name like this with softness as well, that holds its own and feels just right [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - I like [name_u]Rory[/name_u] for this, and the meaning is lovely.
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] - a great classic that fits perfectly with the others, and lovely nn options too - I like Zannah and [name_f]Suki[/name_f] particularly. Great meaning - either [name_f]Lily[/name_f] or trusting.

All 4 of these would sound lovely with [name_f]Violet[/name_f], which I also love.

I also like these with your girls: [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] (but not with [name_f]Violet[/name_f]), [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_f]Leonora[/name_f] (if you don’t mind alliteration with surname).

In the end if I had to choose from your current list I’m finding it hard to choose between my favourites for you, [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

You have some nice options

I like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] for you… but worried the nn’s [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and [name_f]Vivi[/name_f] will jumble together

[name_f]Celia[/name_f] is sweet… you could also do nn Cici. It does sound a touch close to [name_f]Carina[/name_f] though. Would you consider [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]?

Perhaps you might like:

[name_f]Viviana[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Carina[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and…
[name_f]Angelica[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Angelique[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Bonita[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]

I love Celia for you; especially Celia Violet! I think Viviana, Carina and Celia are great together

I think Evs, [name_u]Vannie[/name_u], [name_u]Angie[/name_u], [name_u]Angel[/name_u], Leen (sp?), Leenie and [name_f]Lena[/name_f] are all good alternative nicknames for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]

I really like all of your choices! I think [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] might be a bit of a mouthful, but it is still really pretty! I liked the suggestion of [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]- I was going to suggest [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], though that may not be your style.

I’m sure you’ve probably seen it all already, but my first thought was perhaps [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] “[name_u]Josie[/name_u].” I also really like [name_f]Leonore[/name_f] or [name_f]Helena[/name_f] as a twist on the highly popular [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Celia[/name_f] for you. It’s softer indeed, but not enough of a deal breaker, imo. Life, love and heaven. Sounds good.

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - joy
[name_f]Felicia[/name_f] - joy
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]/[name_f]Nadya[/name_f] - hope
[name_f]Amabel[/name_f] - loving
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] - light
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - wisdom
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] - flourishing

Can I be honest? You’re putting too much pressure on yourself to find the absolute perfect name. A lot of your choices are wonderful and would make a great name for your daughter.

When it comes to [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] I think the meaning Work is not actually an overly bad meaning. Is it a great meaning? No. But is it a bad meaning? Absolutely not

Out of your picks I would be leaning towards [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] , [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. I want to also suggest [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] , [name_f]Freya[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] and [name_f]Carina[/name_f], but I agree with a pp that you could be putting too much pressure on yourself to find the absolute perfect name. There will probably never be a perfect name, but a great name that can become perfect for your girl.

As much as I love [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], I do think they’re too close to [name_f]Viviana[/name_f]. I think a lot of times, people tend to [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the names that are really close to the siblings’ name because that positive association is already there. [name_f]Celia[/name_f] feels too close to [name_f]Carina[/name_f] to me, but [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] could work.

I can’t put my finger on it, but for some reason I keep circling back to [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. It’s familiar, but not popular. It sounds good with [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] and [name_f]Carina[/name_f], but distinct. It also has a botanical connection. The meaning is also sweet, if you click the link and read about it.

I also like the pp suggestion of [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], ‘blessing.’ It is also spunkier than [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], so it sounds good with [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] and [name_f]Carina[/name_f]. [name_f]Bea[/name_f] (rhyming with [name_f]Leah[/name_f]) is a darling nn.

I could also see an Italian name, like [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f], which would have tons of nn options. It’s a very familiar name, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but with a romantic-tinged twist. I also like a familiar [name_m]French[/name_m] choice like [name_f]Amelie[/name_f].

A few feminine options:
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f] (joyous)
[name_f]Alessandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Alessia[/name_f]*
[name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Esperanza[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]*
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] / [name_f]Gabriela[/name_f]
[name_f]Giada[/name_f]
[name_f]Honora[/name_f]*
[name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Larissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeva[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariella[/name_f]* (‘wished for child’)
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f])
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]*
[name_f]Roxanne[/name_f]*
[name_f]Sofia[/name_f]*
[name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] (yass-meen)

I like a lot of your choices, particularly [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Susannah[/name_f].

A few others I thought of (sorry for any repeats):
[name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]

If the meaning of [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] doesn’t excite you, maybe try reading a little about St. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]? [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you’re not religious, she has a pretty cool story- she was known for her work with the poor, and she’s the patron saint of [name_u]Paris[/name_u]. [name_u]Legend[/name_u] has it that her prayers kept [name_m]Attila[/name_m] the Hun from sacking the city. Maybe having such a great namesake might make up a little for a lackluster meaning, if you otherwise are really into the name?
(Maybe I’m a little biased. It’s my daughter’s middle. )

I love [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. All end in “na” so they tie together but they are otherwise different. I think it’s perfect.

Some other names I would suggest for you:

[name_f]Elenora[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Angelica[/name_f]

It is hard to suggest names for other people based on meanings, without knowing what meaning you are after? For example I like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] for “battle-strong” or [name_f]Ava[/name_f] for “eagle” but I’m not sure what values appeal to you

All of your names are lovely, but if you’re looking for an outsider’s nitpicks, here are mine!

I do agree with others that [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] are too close to [name_f]Viviana[/name_f]–[name_f]Carina[/name_f] becomes the odd one out. I think the Italian version of [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f], works better, since it has one v rather than two, and the name’s rhythm is more similar to [name_f]Carina[/name_f]. My understanding of the etymology of [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] is that it’s separate from [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], and that [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]/[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] come from Germanic elements meaning ‘kin’ and ‘woman’, which later happened to coincide with the word for juniper in a number of languages.

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] - gift of God. [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f], [name_f]Dot[/name_f], [name_f]Dorrie[/name_f], [name_f]Theda[/name_f].
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - blessed, happy; originally traveller. [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Trixie[/name_f], [name_f]Betsy[/name_f].
[name_f]Benedetta[/name_f] - blessed. [name_u]Bennie[/name_u], [name_f]Bee[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_f]Bette[/name_f].
[name_f]Honora[/name_f] - honour. [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Onnie[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f].
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Felicita[/name_f], [name_f]Felicia[/name_f] - joy, luck, happiness. [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], [name_f]Flick[/name_f], Flissie.
[name_f]Amanda[/name_f] - lovable. Yes, it was popular in the 60s-80s, but it’s more rare now, and popularity aside, its meaning and style fit well with [name_f]Viviana[/name_f] and [name_f]Carina[/name_f].
[name_f]Philomena[/name_f] - love and strength, or from the Greek for ‘beloved’. Fi, [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], [name_f]Mena[/name_f], [name_f]Fina[/name_f], [name_f]Lena[/name_f].
