[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone I want you opinion on names that have bad meaning because that is what the public gives them. I want to name my child lucifer. I know it’s the devil but I don’t see it that way. Before anyone says I worship satan, I do not I was raised catholic. I just think it is a very strong name and a unique name I don’t hear everyday. I just want your thoughts.
This statement is confusing. If you immediately the devil, chances are you probably do see it that way.
That aside, you don’t know it’s the devil, because there’s a strong possibility it isn’t. It’s a Latin translation of Phosphoros, aka the morningstar - both mean “light-bearer”. It was a very acceptable name for a while. There was even a saint called Lucifer of Cagliari. Even in Abrahamic scriptures there is very little linking the angel that rebelled against god to the devil.
All of that said, I wouldn’t suggest using it as a first name, because people can pass judgement a lot faster than it takes to regurgitate all of the above.
I get where you’re coming from - [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] is a great name sound-wise, and the ‘bearer of light’ meaning is lovely and works really well for book characters/pets but I really don’t think it’s wearable outside of the fictional world, 'cause of the Satan association. I think a child with the name would probably be bullied in school and an adult would find it difficult to wear and be taken seriously. Alternatively, nicknames could be used like ‘[name_m]Luke[/name_m]’ and '[name_f]Luci[/name_f]", but I really would only ever use it on a pet.
What do you think of [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Lucius[/name_m] or [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]? Equally beautiful, but without the Satan connotation.
[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] is a legitimate name from [name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology and there is an early [name_m]Christian[/name_m] saint with the name. Personally I wouldn’t use it myself though since where I live Satan is the overriding association for the majority of people and I think it would likely lead to mocking.
It would make a nice middle name. In my family it would seem cool, but that’s because we have a bit of a dark humour. Though depending on the kid they will either hate the connotation or love the dark sound—some kids, especially people in my family, would find that so cool—Though I agree a kid with this name in the first spot potentially could be bullied or judged.
I agree that this is one of those names that it is best to not give your child as a first name due to potential bullying, mocking and having to explain one’s name. As a pp suggested, do you like [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucius[/name_m]?
There are some names that are off limits, and should remain that way. Instead of focusing on what you think sounds good, you should be thinking about the real life child that would shoulder a massive burden.
I agree with @boyandgirl. The name does sound nice, but I doubt the child would think that the nice sound of the name would be worth the strange looks he might get when he introduces himself.
[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] is a great name… for a cat.
I agree with all others who posted. If I’m being completely frank, it would be incredibly selfish to name your child [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]. Although he is your child, he is more importantly his own person and deserves a name that doesn’t automatically put people off. Because he gets no say in this, I would stick to something less polarizing.
[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] was a great name… but isn’t usable any longer. What about the similar sounding [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], Conifer, Stellifer {star-bearer}, or Solifer {sun-bearer}? The latter ones are unheard of as names, and ripe for the picking!
I agree with the others, it’s not exactly fair to give your child a name that’s so religiously charged and negative. It would be similar to naming your daughter [name_m]Aryan[/name_m] when there’s a white supremacist group with the same name.
I really hate saying this, but I think the name [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] is out of bounds. The name is truly beautiful - it sounds delicate and intelligent, has one of the loveliest meanings I have encountered, and a beautiful story in [name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology too. Strictly speaking, the Devil is never called “[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]” in the Bible, and the word has actually been used to apply to [name_m]Jesus[/name_m] as well. But since nearly everybody does associate it with Satan, it simply is not a suitable name for a human being. Would you like your name to be associated with the personification of all evil? The way your son may feel about it is not the only issue, either; people will not understand his name, and will make extremely negative assumptions from it.
If it wasn’t for the association, I would definitely consider the name [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] too, but as it is, I have to beg you to reconsider.
Sadly there are many lovely names that can just never be a positive gift to a child’s life due to the difficult history that is singularly located to the extent that no one knows anything but that. [name_m]Adolf[/name_m] is an example as well. I’ve know an adolf and it didn’t benifit him. When in doubt middle names are generally safe for whatever as long as your child doesn’t have any aspirations where he would need to file a job application that would require a middle name
