🌄 convince me on:

hi berries!

feeling pretty settled with my lists (top 8) at the moment but i’d like a solid top ten because it’s bothering me more than i can admit to be at eight .

i’d love for you to convince me for (or against) some of my other favourites. i’ll put the list and some thoughts about them, as well as my current shortlists, below. feel free to suggest as well!

girls

current shortlist

darcie (darcie joanna)
summer (summer elise)
evie (evie charlotte)
imogen (imogen alice)
bronte (bronte talia)
adeline (adeline matilda)
mia (mia verity)
bridie (bridie madeleine)

contenders:

alice
  • love alice, but i think i love imogen alice more and i’m reluctant to change
  • unsure if she sounds too prim and proper next to something like darcie?
charlotte
  • popularity doesn’t bother me much, but charlotte really is ubiquitous - too much with bronte and bridie?
  • also would need to find a new middle for evie and evie charlotte has my heart
  • if i did use charlotte as a first i could use charlee as a nickname which i love
lily
  • love the sound and associations
  • used to be one of my top names but i kind of went off her a bit?
maeve
  • one of the first names i loved
  • i heard it on one of my mum’s students, but then i worked with her for a few months and now i find it hard to dissociate her from the name
stella
  • another which used to be one of my top names
  • i love the ‘ella’ sound and star meaning
verity
  • i feel like i should love her and while i do like her a lot, something i can’t name puts me off a bit
  • would have to find a new middle for mia, and i love mia sophie but sophie is very much a gp - worth it to rearrange?

boys

current shortlist

darcy (darcy matthew)
reuben (reuben elijah)
jasper (jasper finlay)
lewis (lewis jonah)
ashton (ashton fletcher)
oliver (oliver jude)
theo (theo lennox)
charlie (charlie simon)

contenders:

callahan
  • too long/much?
  • very surnamey and unsure if he sticks out too much
  • i don’t think i love him
evan/evander
  • evan was my top name for a long while, he feels a little boring but i’m not necessarily sure if that’s a bad thing?
  • evander i like more at the moment and seeing him as evan + alexander has brought him more ‘down-to-earth’ but i’m still worried that he’s too out-there and fantastical compared to my other names
fletcher
  • feeling really drawn to him right now but i’m not sure if it’s just a phase
  • would have to find a new middle for ashton
  • lack of nicknames - i don’t love fletch
murphy
  • feels kind of different vibe-wise
  • too surnamey? less of an issue if i add callahan too?
will
  • really like it but don’t love any long forms
  • any middle with ‘just will’ feels like the start of a sentence or question - ‘will edmund give me this?’ etc.

thanks in advance,
jemma :white_heart:

I think this super depends on what you’re looking for. A lot of these names are either super popular or not so it really depends on if that matters to you.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is ultra popular at the moment so if you want unique, I would stay away from it. But if you want popular/trendy, it’s a good choice

[name_f]Verity[/name_f], on the other hand, is by far the most rare. So again, if you want rare then stick with this one as the others are all in the top 100 (granted, [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] was just outside it last year at 102 in America).

So if you want popular add [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] to your top 8 to make 10.
If you do not want popular, add [name_f]Verity[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] to your top 8 to make 10.

It’s a similar story with the boys

[name_u]Murphy[/name_u], [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m] are the rarest while [name_u]Will[/name_u] and [name_u]Evan[/name_u] are the most common. [name_u]Callahan[/name_u] is the odd duck as its popularity has sky rocketed nearly 500 spots in the last 5 years but it’s still well outside the top 100 as of last year.

So, if you want most popular, definitely go for [name_u]Will[/name_u] and [name_u]Evan[/name_u].
If you want least popular, [name_m]Evander[/name_m] and [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] for sure.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - a sweet and solid name, strong but cute. Still, if you like [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] better, then I’d keep that and dismiss [name_f]Alice[/name_f] as a first for now

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is verrrry popular - and sisters [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] would be too much for me (especially with middle name Talia) - but it is a solid and elegant name. Still, if it already has a place on your list as a middle, I’d keep it there.

[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - sweet and sparky, stylish and bright. It’s nice but not quite so vibrant as your other names?

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - warm and sharp but sweet. Maybe try making a few combos with it to see if it can be disassociated?

[name_f]Stella[/name_f] - bright, gorgeous and lovely - fits well on your list

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] - like you, I like it, but something puts me off

[name_u]Callahan[/name_u] - love it - elegant and cool at the same time - and I can see it with [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], but maybe less so with [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Theo[/name_u] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]. Maybe as a middle?

[name_u]Evan[/name_u] is lovely and charming - one I haven’t heard irl for ages. [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is magical and cool but grounded! I could see it besides [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] and [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]

[name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] - I like it a lot - distinctive and interesting. It is hard to find nicknames for though. Maybe [name_m]Frey[/name_m], [name_u]Terry[/name_u], Feef?

[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] - love it! Great meaning and sound. With [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] and potentially [name_u]Callahan[/name_u], it would work

[name_u]Will[/name_u] - solid but with a bit of edge since it’s not [name_u]William[/name_u]. I think if [name_u]Will[/name_u] was heard in the context of being a name, it sounds less ‘wordy’. However, I don’t love [name_u]Will[/name_u] with [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] or [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - or maybe even [name_m]Lewis[/name_m]

[name_f]My[/name_f] personal favourites are [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_u]Callahan[/name_u] and [name_u]Evan[/name_u] / [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. For you I’m thinking [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_u]Will[/name_u].

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - I think it’s a gorgeous feminine name and I find it quite sweet. Not too prim and proper in my opinion.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - doesn’t work with some other names, but [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] really is beautiful!

[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - short and sweet. I think that you’ll fall in love with it again since it was your top name. Fits the rest of the list.

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - dissociating is very very hard :pensive:

[name_f]Stella[/name_f] - since it used to be a top fave. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Stella[/name_f].

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] - I feel like it could work with [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], but it’s not exactly my style. [name_f]My[/name_f] phone wants to autocorrect it into ‘verify’

[name_u]Callahan[/name_u] - in my list. Very cool in my opinion and not too long at all! But you seem to prefer short names

[name_u]Evan[/name_u] / [name_m]Evander[/name_m] - not boring at all. Im sure you’ll love it if you put the list aside for a little while. Nothing about it feels ‘out there’ But maybe I’m ruined by word names like Stargazer and [name_u]Rocket[/name_u] [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_m]Evander[/name_m] feel pretty normal

[name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] - not my vibe at all, all I think about is fetching and flexing. But it goes with the list style wise.

[name_u]Murphy[/name_u] - not my vibe, I think of [name_u]Eddie[/name_u] [name_u]Murphy[/name_u]. But then again, fits your list actually somehow! I could see him as one of the brothers.

[name_u]Will[/name_u] - Fits the list and I like it! However people might think it’s short from [name_u]William[/name_u].

Girls ~ all your girls combos are a great balance of familiar and unexpected (I especially like [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Bridie[/name_f] Madeleine). They’re also youthful, lively, and nostalgic without being clunky.

I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Verity[/name_f] where you’ve got them already so I’d keep those in your combos. That leaves [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. I think of these and your existing combos, [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is the outlier - [name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] both have that lively, frank, charming vibe which fits your set whereas [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] feels more… mysterious?

Boys ~ again, a great mix of popular and less familiar with a nostalgic edge. [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite is [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] [name_u]Finlay[/name_u]. I will say that [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] very much reminds me of [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] Kutcher though :see_no_evil:

[name_u]Callahan[/name_u] does stick out to me. I don’t think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is too out there at all, he’s got that similarity to popular [name_u]Evan[/name_u] + [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] which makes him more familiar than say, [name_m]Lysander[/name_m]. I don’t love [name_u]Evan[/name_u] alone but [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is great and you can use [name_u]Evan[/name_u] as a nn.

I really like [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] and I’m probably on team ‘find a new middle for Ashton’ anyway, but if you don’t love [name_m]Fletch[/name_m] then I wouldn’t use it.

Not mad about [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] as a first name. [name_u]Will[/name_u] is great, it has a similar ‘familiar but still fresh’ feel to many of your other names and I don’t think it sounds too wordy.

Conclusion ~ I think you should add [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_m]Evander[/name_m] and [name_u]Will[/name_u] :sparkles:

@cms1512 the popularity is an important consideration, thank you! i probably wouldn’t want anything super popular unless there was personal meaning so i’m thinking charlotte in particular isn’t quite right.

@Greyblue i agree with a lot of your thoughts here - i’m thinking i will try some maeve combos but if nothing sticks she might be better in the middle. i’m glad that will doesn’t seem too wordy!

@Parfait_de_Roses that’s an interesting observation about callahan! now that i think about it, he probably is a bit long - although i do like cal. evander definitely does seem ‘normal’ compared to rocket :joy:

@persephonescrown oh, i can’t unsee the ashton fletcher/kutcher thing now! fletcher definitely seems to have been a phase and it’s coming to an end so i think i’m also on team ‘find a new middle for ashton’. evander ‘evan’ is so smart, i love little ‘best of both worlds’ things like that!

thanks for the help, everyone! i’ve decided on alice, stella, evander ‘evan’ and will :white_heart:
