Cool Male Name?!

I know that nameberry says some bad things about the male name [name_m]Davenport[/name_m].

I know that I like odd, old-fashioned, and clunky names.

I know that a davenport is a form of sofa and so is a Chesterfield (see, I think the latter makes a great name too!). Frankly, I can’t figure out how a davenport differs from a chesterfield from a sofa from a couch and this is the sort of thing I muse on when I can’t sleep.

But I still really like the name [name_m]Davenport[/name_m].

To me, it is has a retro, nostalgic feel to it (no one calls their sofa a davenport any more). Like the cool name [name_m]Donovan[/name_m]. Summery, that turquoise green color so big in the 60’s.

It is definitely male, [name_m]Davenport[/name_m]. The [name_u]Daven[/name_u] sound as well as the manly, sea-going sound of port.

Nicknames abound: Dav, [name_u]Daven[/name_u], [name_m]Dave[/name_m], [name_m]Davy[/name_m], [name_m]Ven[/name_m], [name_u]Porter[/name_u], [name_m]Port[/name_m].

It sounds wealthy cool, without being crass like [name_m]Cash[/name_m] or [name_u]Royce[/name_u].

And creative, like a painter or architect or writer.

What do you think? (You won’t hurt my feelings; it’s just a name!).

Well, in Australia it’s a brand of men’s underwear so wealthy cool isn’t what I would call it.
Aside from that connection for me, I find the name too clunky.

Now that is new knowledge for me. NOT a name for Australia!

Oddly enough, I actually really like it. It’s odd because I’m generally into short, non-fussy names - like [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m] or [name_m]Abram[/name_m].

It’s the type of overdone name that would usually turn me off… but this one is different. This one I like quite a bit! You’re right, nobody calls a sofa a davenport anymore. And, as long as you’re not in Australia… I don’t think it’s negative at all!

Good luck!

I like [name_m]Davenport[/name_m]. It is rather long, so I think a nickname would make it more accessible, but I don’t see anything wrong with it.

When I first read it, I winced, but you may have sold me on the name’s attractiveness!

I just love the nn [name_m]Davey[/name_m] but hate [name_m]David[/name_m], so I’m appreciative you thought of another option.

I would never actually use it though… To me, it sounds like a style of loafer sold by J. [name_m]Crew[/name_m] or something.

I hear what you are saying about J. [name_m]Crew[/name_m]. Some fine names are hampered by sounding J. Crewish.

But I do think it would be nice if someone named her kid [name_m]Davenport[/name_m], just to add something new to the mix. I’m in my 25th year of teaching and I get so sick of the same old names.

PS I too love [name_m]Davy[/name_m]/[name_m]Davey[/name_m] but dislike [name_m]David[/name_m], so there is that.

When I was a child I heard plenty of older people using davenport instead of sofia or couch, so I personally can not picture it as a name.

are to me still sofas, but I like the word and its nicknames.

[name_m]Davenport[/name_m] has risen in popularity on nameberry and I am wondering which of its nicknames people favor:

Dav
[name_u]Daven[/name_u]
[name_m]Dave[/name_m]
[name_m]Davey[/name_m]/[name_m]Davy[/name_m]
[name_m]Ven[/name_m]
[name_m]Port[/name_m]/[name_u]Porter[/name_u]?

Am I missing any?
