[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! [name_f]My[/name_f] boyfriend and I are expecting a little girl and I really need your help.
You see, my boyfriend wants to use a “cool, unusual” name…I’m totally cool with that except his options are: Jaedynn, Cohcoh, Macklyn, [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f], Maxxwelle, and Deztinneigh (I kid you not.). Those…yeah, not cool with those. I love classic names, like [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and so on.
I know he wants to use a cool and unusual name, so I’m hoping you guys can help me find a cool, unusual name that is also technically a classic name that is NOT misspelled (or made up…or a boy name). Any thoughts/ideas?
From that list, perhaps you and your boyfriend might like:
[name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Roxy[/name_f]…pretty cool!)
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]
[name_f]Portia[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
Other ideas:
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
Your child will thank you for not calling her Pocahantas
[name_m]How[/name_m] about some names that could feel made up but are already well established names or something quirky:
[name_f]Clea[/name_f]/[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Waverley[/name_f]
[name_f]Amity[/name_f]
[name_f]Clover[/name_f]
maybe look at yesterdays nameberry post about underused classics before the US top 1000, it still has the classic names you like but maybe being less popular than classics like [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] it could feel unusual enough for him?
Well, I’m going to have to lash out odder than [name_f]Elizabeth/name_f but these are “real” and yet hopefully uncommon enough to catch his eye.
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] - Greek mythology. The X might keep him happy but it’s not made up.
[name_f]Kezia[/name_f] - Biblical
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - Color, tree, a bit nature-y but not made up.
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]/[name_f]Celestine[/name_f] - [name_m]French[/name_m] for heaven/sky.
[name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] - Greek mythology.
[name_f]Cerise[/name_f] - Color, tree, [name_m]French[/name_m].
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f] or [name_f]Liliana[/name_f] (I like [name_u]Vivien[/name_u] and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] too but they might be too buttoned-up for him?)
[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f] - [name_f]Virtue[/name_f] name. Much MUCH nicer than Deztinneigh or whatever that was, and yet will sound more uncommon because it’s underused compared to [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] or [name_f]Serenity[/name_f].
[name_f]Livia[/name_f]
Trying to blend your lovely style with his
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]

[name_f]Zea[/name_f]
[name_f]Yvaine[/name_f]
Gwenllian
[name_f]Severine[/name_f]
And since he seems to like unisex names
[name_u]Micah[/name_u]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]Skylar[/name_u]/[name_f]Skyla[/name_f]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]
[name_u]Larkin[/name_u]
I love the name [name_f]Thais[/name_f] – tah-ees. It is a very old (female) name, but so underused it has a fresh, strong sound to it. It is also definitely not frilly, which is at least where you two seem to line up. I think you can also get the fun, spunky, boyish nickname [name_m]Ty[/name_m] out of it.
Thanks so much everyone! [name_f]My[/name_f] boyfriend is currently out of town (:() so when I talk to him tomorrow I’ll be sure to run the names by him!
From all of your suggestions, these are the ones I like/could see me (us) using:
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (though we can’t use it)
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] (though he’d never go for it)
[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f] (though we can’t use it, which REALLY bums me out!!)
[name_f]Viviana[/name_f]
[name_f]Liliana[/name_f]
[name_f]Livia[/name_f] ([name_u]LOVE[/name_u] “[name_f]Liv[/name_f]”)
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
Roxalie (historical, powerful woman, though she has a bad rep)
Diadama (an old name based on ‘diadem–jewels of a crown’, kind of like the more modern [name_f]Tiara[/name_f])
[name_f]Godiva[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucrezia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]
[name_u]Alix[/name_u] (ancient [name_m]Norman[/name_m] form of [name_f]Alice[/name_f])
[name_f]Axelle[/name_f]
Sebastienne
Catiche (ka-TEESH)–old Fr. diminutive of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
It sounds to me like he likes long names. Ask him about [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]! It sounds cool and ethnic… it’s well established so it sorta fits into the classic category. But it’s really underused due to it’s length.
I’ll also suggest [name_f]Pandora[/name_f]. Not my personal cup of tea but a big step up from [name_f]Pocahontas[/name_f].
Omg I just realized Deztinnigh is kre8tive spelling for [name_f]Destiny[/name_f]. Oh, you poor dear. No worries, the berries will rescue you!
Hmmm maybe have a talk about how his idea of what is cool is very different from little girls or teen girls (not to mention hiring managers). Being a girl can be tough - you have to walk a thin line between fitting in and standing out. Not to mention, in many careers, you have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously. I think there have been a lot of great suggestions for names that are different and strong, but won’t make life more difficult for her. Best of luck!
