Coral vs Poppy

Without considering the possible middle names, which one do you prefer and why?

Better yet, would be useful if you could describe what you imagine a [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_f]Coral[/name_f] to be like.

[name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_f]Coral[/name_f] are both very pretty names, but I imagine two very different little girls when I hear them.

When I think of [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], I see a mischievous girl, short dirty blond curls with green eyes and freckles. A little girl that looks absolutely adorable, but is Always up to something. Also I see a [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] play outside a lot, a very adventurous person, Climbing trees etc.

When I think of [name_f]Coral[/name_f] however, I immediately see a very creative girl with long red curls and big blue eyes (might be because of [name_f]Coral[/name_f] and the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid, I don’t even know XD). [name_f]Coral[/name_f] to me is a bubbly, energetic extrovert with millions of plans and ideas.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helped in any way

I was actually just looking at your signature and thinking [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] & [name_f]Coral[/name_f] [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] are such different directions.

I prefer [name_f]Coral[/name_f] of the two. So rare yet well known and whilst it’s a beautiful nature name, I think it’s sound is very namely in itself (similar to [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Carol[/name_f], [name_f]Corrine[/name_f], [name_f]Cerys[/name_f] etc.) and I’m surprised it’s not more commonly used. It’s elegant and playful, to me.

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is a nice name, there’s just soooo many of them in my area I find it a little dull. I don’t find the sound very appealing to be honest; it’s less of a name in itself, the only redeeming quality for me is the flower (beautiful connection, yes; somebody on here once linked an article about the name’s strength through the associations of the flower but I haven’t seen it since). [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is very popular on NB and in the UK so my opinions aren’t commonly held!

I think either would be an objectively good choice, but my preference is [name_f]Coral[/name_f]. [name_f]Coral[/name_f] [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] is stunning (I adore [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] especially in the middle, it’s beautiful here)

Oh sorry I just re-read the comment about ignoring mns. I got carried away.

To answer your question about personality etc;
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]; I think of loud, bouncy, gorgeous. A definite sense of resilience, and of fun. A large presence, never shrinks to the background.
[name_f]Coral[/name_f]; much more softly spoken but very sure of herself, distinct, careful, reflective. Very clever and family-orientated. Tenderness, serenity.

I much prefer [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], it just seems more like a name and less like a word to me, similar to [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
[name_f]Coral[/name_f] makes me think of the colour; I imagine a coral with light blonde hair, a Californian tan and Coachella clothing, very hipster-y, a big social media fan, magazine rather than book-reader (nothing wrong with that), make-up lover (and good at it), [name_f]Coral[/name_f] is intelligent but can sometimes lean towards taking on an opinion of somebody she admires rather than forming her own.

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] has brown hair, like reading books (though rarely gets to it), is a jeans and t-shirt person, likes social media, loves a good argument/discussion/debate (sometimes too much), has a small group of very close friends, likes art and photography, is very kind and friendly but prefer smaller groups and is a bit shy around new people ([name_f]Coral[/name_f] loves meeting new people).

I have never been able to get into [name_f]Coral[/name_f], although I do adore [name_f]Coralie[/name_f]. I adore [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]. [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is beautiful, cheerful, sunny, spunky, …

I agree that [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] has a spunky feel to me–lots of attitude/personality.
[name_f]Coral[/name_f] has a softness to it–the sort of strong that is less pronounced, but equally present.
Of the two, I prefer [name_f]Coral[/name_f], just because [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] feels a bit like a nickname to me. However, I do love it as a shortened form of [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]/[name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

Thank you all for your descriptions, very helpful! I feel though that I prefer [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] as a stand-alone name rather than a nickname for a “P” name that I’ll probably never come around to using, and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] just aren’t my style of names, although very pretty.

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]: I agree that she’s so spunky! I always imagine that if I had a [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] (or even a daughter with [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] as her middle, like I have with [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] on my list), she would be sweet and friendly and all grins and giggles, maybe a bit on the shy side, but not enough to hold her back, really. She’s one of the happiest little girls I know, and she would always help mama in the kitchen (especially when it comes to baking!) and when she’s about six she begs every. single. day. to take piano lessons. From mama. lol. (Although I’m not sure I’d mind!) She loves all the mystery series I have left over from when I was a little girl, and always wants to tag along when I’m doing nonprofit/ministry work. (Her favorite is baking cookies and lemon poppyseed muffins for the military in our area.) When she’s about 9, she really gets into the Chronicles of [name_f]Narnia[/name_f], and she falls in love with [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] when she’s 15. She’s not really sure what she wants to do when she grows up, but she wants to help people. She’s intelligent, kind, and wise. She’s nowhere near as rowdy as some of her siblings, but she has a passionate, fierce heart, and she could do whatever she sets her mind up to.

[name_f]Coral[/name_f]: honestly, I can’t even envision a [name_f]Coral[/name_f], so I wouldn’t know what to say here. I like [name_f]Cora[/name_f], and [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], but the middle ground of [name_f]Coral[/name_f] sort of throws me for a loop. I’m not even sure how I feel about it as a name, and I’ve never met a [name_f]Coral[/name_f], so I wouldn’t know what to think. She could form her own personality, for sure.

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is for sure my favorite, and I love the idea of twins named [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m]! Seriously so adorable.

Good luck!

I prefer [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]. [name_f]Coral[/name_f] is forever tainted from the trashy character in the movie Coctail. Plus [name_f]Coral[/name_f] feels awkward on my mouth. Almost a tongue twister.

I prefer [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]. [name_f]Coral[/name_f] sounds dated to me, but [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is vibrant and gorgeous.

Wow! A lot more love for [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]! Thanks guys, the descriptions are a treat to read!

I’m another one who loves [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] but is not so smitten with [name_f]Coral[/name_f].

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is super cute, though it often seems to be a nickname for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] these days. I actually know a [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] who is called [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], which is one of your name combos.

I think of [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] as spunky, vibrant, outgoing, maybe mischievous

I think of [name_f]Cora[/name_f]/[name_f]Coralie[/name_f] (but not [name_f]Coral[/name_f]) as confident but a bit more reserved, kind, maybe artistic

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is vibrant and clever. She’d teach art to first graders and chair a non-profit organization that provides shoes to people in need.

[name_f]Coral[/name_f] is soft spoken but whip smart. She only says what needs to be said; there is nothing frivolous about her. She is president of her sorority and has an eye for color. Her interior design business does very well; [name_f]Julia[/name_f] Sugarbaker is her mentor.

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is lively, interesting and clever

[name_f]Coral[/name_f] is boring, trashy and dated and it reminds me of a horse corral

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is lively, interesting and clever

[name_f]Coral[/name_f] is boring, trashy and dated and it reminds me of a horse corral

I prefer [name_f]Poppy[/name_f].

I imagine [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] to be a bubbly, loud, passionate and confident person, but I can’t picture how they look. [name_m]Just[/name_m] that they’re lively, happy-go-lucky, sweet and positive. With [name_f]Coral[/name_f], I imagine someone more serious but very passionate, hard-working and focused.

[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is lively, interesting and clever

[name_f]Coral[/name_f] is boring, trashy and dated and it reminds me of a horse corral

Jeez, it’s one thing to state your opinion and another to be rude. Calling a name trashy is over the top, it’s enough to say you prefer [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] because it’s lively, interesting and clever; no need to insult [name_f]Coral[/name_f], a name someone may love and have used for their child. Can we just keep things mature please? Yes, you are entitled to think [name_f]Coral[/name_f] is trashy, boring and whatever else but please think before you speak (or write) just as we’d teach our children to do.

On that note, I love [name_f]Coral[/name_f]. It evokes a beautiful image of color in similar fashion to [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Plus it feels softer and more feminine than [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] feels to me; however, both are lovely.

I adore both, but I have to say, [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] wins out for me. I imagine [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] to be a bubbly, charismatic little girl who enjoys all things frilly and feminine, and is likely to be found holding tea parties with her stuffed animals and cherished toys while she sits in one of her many dressing up gowns, wanting to dress up and wear makeup or do her nails and hair, and dreaming of being either a princess or actress when she grows up.

[name_f]Coral[/name_f], however, strikes me as an outdoorsy type - a girl who loves to be close to nature, and would likely attempt tree-climbing in a dress, just to prove it can be done. [name_f]Coral[/name_f] wouldn’t take no for an answer - if you tell her she is unable to do something, she’ll work that much harder to prove you wrong. Stubborn, free-spirited, and creative, she’d find a new way to look at any situation.
