I am a long-time lurker, first-time poster. I have a daughter named [name]Sylvie[/name] and am due at the end of February with another child, whose gender remains unknown. I have a name in mind if the baby is a boy, but I am a bit stumped if it’s a girl. I love [name]Cornelia[/name] and just wanted to test the anonymous waters to see what it brings to mind for other people. I have heard several opinions from family and friends and I think it is safe to say that to those who thought [name]Sylvie[/name] was an off-the-wall choice (I thought it was pretty safe, actually), [name]Cornelia[/name] is downright freakish.
So, what do you think?
I actually love the name [name]Cornelia[/name]! It doesn’t get the love it deserves. Its a very beautiful name! Plus, it has a lot of pretty nickname options. I don’t think it is freakish at all. But, when I hear it, I do think of [name]Cornelia[/name] Funke. But that’s not a big deal at all, and she’s a wonderful author. If you love it, go for it. I think [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Cornelia[/name] sound beautiful together.
[name]Cornelia[/name] is nice, but I can’t get past the “corn” beginning! I think that’s why I prefer [name]Cordelia[/name], although that begins with “cord” so I’m not sure it’s much better. I think [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Cornelia[/name] or [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name] are both lovely options, but I vastly prefer [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name]! I don’t think you’ll get a ton of great responses to it outside of Nameberry, but both names are very lovely.
Good luck!
I am totally with ashthedreamer here. I like many aspects of the sound. But the “corn” is an issue. Maybe it’s “knee” too. [name]Shame[/name] because I love [name]Nell[/name], and might consider [name]Cornelia[/name] to get to it. I agree [name]Cordelia[/name] is more wearable. I think “cord” is a fair bit better than “corn.” Corn goes with corny, unflattering terms for anatomy, a foot injury, etc. [name]Cord[/name] is a musical chord, or a cord of firewood, or just a plain old rope-like thing - much more positive-to-neutral. [name]Sylvie[/name] is such a light and airy and silvery and sylvan name to my ear (love it, by the way!), that I think if you’re going with a clunkier name for her sister, you might do well to stay away from the “corn” issue. [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Delia[/name] are both lovely nicknames for [name]Cordelia[/name] too.
Anyway, I ultimately have to support [name]Cornelia[/name] because I think good classic names need more use, but I do wonder if it’s worth the negative reactions you’ll get elsewhere, especially since it seems a bit mismatched to [name]Sylvie[/name].
I adore [name]Cornelia[/name], and would definitely use it, due to my immense love for a character called [name]Cornelia[/name] [name]Brown[/name]. Plus, the name shortens to quite a few adorable nicknames: [name]Cora[/name], [name]Nell[/name], [name]Lia[/name], even [name]Connie[/name].
I must admit, I would be slightly surprised to learn that [name]Cornelia[/name]'s sister would be [name]Sylvie[/name], as opposed to [name]Sylvia[/name], since it does seem mismatched. Perhaps your friends and family were expecting something more along the lines of [name]Coralie[/name], or even [name]Coraline[/name]?
i am with ashthedreamer and jesba with the ‘corn’ bit bothering me a bit. i,too, love cordelia. but i do not find cornelia freakish in anyway or too out there. sylvie is adorable!
I don’t find [name]Cornelia[/name] freakish - but it isn’t my favourite name. I really like pp’s suggestion of [name]Coraline[/name]. I also love [name]Concordia[/name] - [name]Sylvie[/name] & [name]Coco[/name] would make adorable sisters.
I like [name]Cornelia[/name] very much!
[name]Cordelia[/name] is, [name]IMO[/name], one of the prettiest names in the world, but it’s ruined (for me) by the character’s sad story in [name]King[/name] Lear.
[name]Coraline[/name] is a cute alternative to [name]Cornelia[/name], but I don’t really love the suggestion of [name]Coralie[/name] because I don’t like the matchy ending with [name]Sylvie[/name].
I like [name]Cornelia[/name] a lot and think [name]Neelie[/name] is a really cute nickname. But yeah, anyone who thinks [name]Sylvie[/name] is weird will probably think this one is 1000X weirder! I do see the ‘corn’ in [name]Cornelia[/name], but I still like the name. I like [name]Cordelia[/name] as well…[name]Coraline[/name] and [name]Cora[/name]- names are nice too, but to me it’s a whole different category.
I really like [name]Cornelia[/name], and some days I prefer it to [name]Cordelia[/name], because while I can never quite love any [name]Cordelia[/name] nn’s, I adore [name]Neely[/name] or [name]Nell[/name]. [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Cornelia[/name] sound nice together.
I love [name]Cornelia[/name]!! [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Coraline[/name], [name]Coralie[/name], and all the other variations are also lovely too, but [name]Cornelia[/name] is my favorite. It has lots of nickname potential, too. [name]Cora[/name], [name]Nell[/name], [name]Corrie[/name]…
Thanks for all the input! DH and my father are both totally hung up on the “[name]Corny[/name]” factor. Maybe it’s willful denial on my part, but I’m not that offended by that. (At least I wasn’t until a friend told me her first impression was “Horny [name]Corny[/name]”…) I have considered [name]Cordelia[/name], but there is something about the sound of [name]Cornelia[/name] that strikes me as softer and gentler. I know it might seem a bit of a stretch to some, but I’m in love with the nn [name]Coco[/name], which no one mentioned except as a potential nn for [name]Concordia[/name]. My second pick for a nn would be [name]Nelly[/name].
In any event, it will take some arm-twisting to get DH on board with [name]Cornelia[/name], no matter how much I’m in love with it. Our other picks are a bit more standard these days: [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Flora[/name], and [name]Simone[/name] being the top three we can agree on.[name]Simone[/name] is a long-time love of mine, but I don’t know if [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Simone[/name] is just a bit too much “French S”, especially combined with my first name, which also begins with S.
Choices, choices…sigh.
My only problem with [name]Cornelia[/name] is the “corn” part. I have a huge, irrational fear of corn (I’m completely serious, that’s the sad part) and I honestly probably would delibrately not make efforts to be friends with a [name]Cornelia[/name] because of that. But, I mean, I’m probably the only person in the world with this phobia so…yeah.
[name]Cornelia[/name] is gorgeous! I love it. It’s one of my great aunt’s names and is perfectly antique and lovely. I think it’s a great name for a little girl.
I can totally see [name]Coco[/name] for [name]Cornelia[/name]. Good luck whatever you decide!
I think [name]Cornelia[/name] is very pretty and not “freakish” in any way shape or form. I much much prefer [name]Cordelia[/name] though because like others have mentioned it just sounds prettier. Good [name]Luck[/name]
I have to agree with PPs on the “corn” thing. I can’t get past it so I very much prefer [name]Cordelia[/name]. I agree that [name]Cornelia[/name] does have cuter nicknames though.
All I can think of is corn. Sorry
i [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Simone[/name] too! [name]Simone[/name] [name]Cornelia[/name] or [name]Cornelia[/name] [name]Simone[/name] are gorgeous! do you like [name]Corinne[/name] or [name]Colette[/name] to get to [name]Coco[/name]?
First, your daughter has a beautiful name! I love [name]Sylvie[/name]
I think [name]Cornelia[/name] is beautiful! I absolutely adore it with the nickname [name]Nelly[/name]/ie! [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Cornelia[/name] would be a beautiful sister set!
