Cornelius, thoughts?

So, we’ve taken some time to think on the 20 or so [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] combos we had and we’ve so far gotten them down to a top 10. We’d love to hear thoughts on them. What do you like, what do you not like? What works, what doesn’t? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think things work better shifted around or anything really?

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Bard[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]

*A note on [name_m]Odin[/name_m] – [name_m]Odin[/name_m] has religious significance in this house which is why his name is in the combos. We’ve been told before on here not to use it, but it’s my husband honoring one of his gods.
*A note on [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] – [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] ap Nudd is a Welsh mythological figure, the king of the Tylwyth Teg or “fair folk” and ruler of the Welsh Otherworld, Annwn. Described as a great warrior with a “blackened face”, [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] is intimately associated with the otherworld in medieval Welsh literature, and is associated with the international tradition of the [name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_m]Hunt[/name_m].

I’ll hold off on giving my imagery until I’ve whittled down a bit more, but some generally imagery on [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] and if you want more on other names, ask in the comments.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] is the type of name that makes me think of a barefoot, long haired intelligent type reading under a tree in the yard. But with the nicknames ([name_u]Cory[/name_u], [name_u]Neil[/name_u], [name_u]Lee[/name_u] etc) he could also be a skater or a surfer or anything he wants. It also feels old fashioned and knightish like [name_m]Roland[/name_m] does (but not as much)

Thanks!

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] - Sounds lovely and has a nice flow.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes - Not so much a fan. I always think of the owl from the Sword in the [name_m]Stone[/name_m] when I think of Archimedes.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy - I like this a lot. The flow is great and Abernathy rocks.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] - I like the flow of [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m], but [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] (as cool as it is) breaks the flow a bit.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] - My favorite from your list.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy - Nice!
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] - [name_m]Even[/name_m] though [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is in the middle, I still feel that [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] and [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] clash a bit.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] - It’s a bit of a mouthful, but it’s my second favorite.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Bard[/name_m] - Not so much a fan of [name_m]Bard[/name_m].
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] - While I can appreciate the story behind [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u], it just makes me think of the girl name [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]. It flows nicely though.

Also, can I just say, I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the name [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m].

Ranked from favourite combination to least favourite combination

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy (this flow of this is so beautiful, will never not be my favourite)
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] (this one is so aesthetically pleasing to look at)
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes (I love how well [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and Archimedes go together)
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Bard[/name_m] (now, I don’t know if [name_m]Bard[/name_m] is in the combination in the capacity of a surname, but if it’s a different spelling of the Norwegian name Bård, have you guys considered using Baard instead? It’s pronounced exactly the same way, but my perfectionistic self can’t help but preferring that the combination doesn’t end with two four-lettered names, lol)
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] (the reason why I’ve listed it so far down is the similar endings of [name_m]Odin[/name_m] and [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u])
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] (it just doesn’t do anything for me, I think the other combinations are much better)

My favourites are [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy, [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] and [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Bard[/name_m]. Amazing combos!

I love the names [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] separately but I’m not sure they flow together. I’d prefer to see [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Holmes[/name_m], personally.

Archimedes is a bit of a mouthful with [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m]. I much prefer Abernathy in the third spot, and I love that [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and Abernathy all share an ‘N’ sound, it ties them all together. The same with [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m].

I’m really not a fan of [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m], [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] or [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m], so I’m biased against those combos.

[name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] doesn’t work for me, the repetitive sound is a bit much (IN [name_u]WYN[/name_u]).

Yes, I can see him beneath a tree reading. It feels very bookish, but not in an indoor kind of way. There’s some nature in there. It feels gentle, cultured yet rural. I can see a [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] living in a wood cabin by a river, walls lined with books, the sounds of classical music drifting out the open window.

The Edwins:

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]- I love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m], but it’s not working here for me. On the one hand, I like the hard C/K at the start and end, like matching bookends. At the same time, I feel like it almost makes [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] feel a little harsher than it is. It’s such a soft, gentle name.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes- I like it, but it is a lot of name. I know you don’t shy away from that, so if it doesn’t bother you, that’s fine.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy- Hmm, yes. This is nice. It does feel older. This would be the name of a boy with an old soul.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]- [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m], not sure I like the repeating ‘or’ and ‘us’ sound of [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] and [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m].

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]- I think this hits all the right notes. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is a leather bound book, [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] adds some whimsy and nature.

The Odins:

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Bard[/name_m]- I like this one a lot. Possibly my favorite. It’s music and forests and books.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]- I’m gaga for [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]. It’s what I want to call my Gwydion. [name_m]Even[/name_m] so, I prefer [name_m]Bard[/name_m] here.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m]- This is what’s so interesting about imagery and names for me. [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] shakes my imagery of [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] up quite a bit. I don’t see him in the woods. He’d be urban. Still bookish and cultured, but the tree would be in a park in a bustling city. Pigeons as opposed to eagles.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]- yup, I like it. I think there’s a bit of a flirting in this name, someone who has a wicked smile for the ladies (or gents!).

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy- I prefer Abernathy with your [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] combo, but I really like it here, too. I’d go with whichever you feel stronger about, because they’re both quite lovely.

Thanks you guys!

@harling – We love [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] too! I think of the owl as well as the man and thinking of the owl is all right with me! I love that little owl! Odd flow and long names don’t bother us. The middles are for us (she won’t really use them much in her life anyway). [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]'s name is 12 syllables so [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] T. is actually shorter :stuck_out_tongue: And we don’t care that [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] is like [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]. The Y is the male ending over there and it’s a second middle.

@[name_f]Zelia[/name_f] – [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy is probably my favorite too because of the lyrical quality here and my only tick here is the initials spell COAT. [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] is really pleasant to look at. Something about all the curves.
[name_m]Bard[/name_m] was not meant to be Bård it was meant to be like a bard (a traveling musician/performer). Now, I know Bård comes from Bárðr in Old Norse, yes? And that comes form words for battle and peace? (bear with me, I’m only just learning this language and stuff from my husband) So does Bård means battle/peace or something else? I think it’s actually quite cool that it has music and artistic stuff as bard but a connection to something Norse as Bård or an alternate to Baard for my husband.
And yes, I never considered the similarity between [name_m]Odin[/name_m] and [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]. We had it as [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Herne[/name_m] originally but I changed it. [name_m]Herne[/name_m] has the same association with the [name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_m]Hunt[/name_m].

@[name_u]Freddie[/name_u] – I really dislike [name_m]Holmes[/name_m] for some reason. I’m starting to see what people are not liking about [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] in there. Thanks to you and [name_f]Zelia[/name_f] for pointing out the issues with [name_m]Odin[/name_m] and [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]. It’s something to think on.

@[name_f]Fey[/name_f] – That’s basically exactly where I see a grown up [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] living. He lives by a stream in a cabin in the woods, somewhere that he can see the stars. He reads by the water, one foot in there, making little notes in the margins of his book, a pen and paper beside him in case he gets struck by the muse…I love the image. Yes I love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] by itself and it seems so gentle but then with [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m], for some reason it seems harsh. Hmm…
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] isn’t any longer than [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]'s name actual. 12 syllables.
Abernathy was the name of a scribe in a [name_u]Terry[/name_u] [name_m]Brooks[/name_m] book so I’ve always connected it with someone smart and funny and very good at getting out of trouble.
I never noticed those repeating sounds until you mentioned it >.< Dang it now I can’t stop seeing it! :stuck_out_tongue:
Yes, Cornelius is reading in the woods, Edmund is a writer to me, Peregrine adds a bit of dash, like Cornelius weekends as a flaconer.
Exactly why I liked Cornelius with Odin and Bard. Music, books with a dash of aggression.
I’ve never pictured Cornelius Odin Vladimir as urban but I can get there. I’ve always pictured him basically as Gary Oldman as Dracula. He’s tough and aggressive when he needs to be, but suave and charming and perfectly gentlemanly when he needs to be. I can get to the artist living in an urban area.
Casimir always struck me that way. A wicked grin. Sort of like Viggo Mortenson as Hidalgo.

Thanks everyone. You’ve give me some things to think on. I’d love some more opinions.

Bumping this just to try and gather more than a few opinions. Thanks!

I quite like [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m], it’s my middle name list. My favorite of your combos is [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes - I mostly think Archimedes is an awesome middle name, but this combo does sound great.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] - [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] makes this name a medieval castle. Basically the same Game of Thrones type imagery I mentioned below, except [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] is in the castle that the men in fur are from. He’d be more intellectual, I think.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] - [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] makes this name a winter forest. I’m picturing a Game of Thrones type thing with men riding through a snowy forest in heavy fur.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] - This is flawless, but doesn’t reflect your or your husband’s religious beliefs (while your other favorites do).
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] - Is this the only combo with [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]? Normally mixing mythologies doesn’t work, but this does. Maybe because [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] to heavy enough to balance [name_m]Odin[/name_m] and [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]?

I think [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] is my favorite, especially since the names seem so meaningful to you.

[name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] may feel somewhat feminine but it is unlikely to come up around people might tease him about it.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] feels a little nerdy to me (don’t be offended–I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] nerds) but he has options to spice it up. I really like names that have a lot of nickname options, and given the Norse influences in your names I would definitely go for a cool nickname like [name_m]Nels[/name_m] or [name_m]Niels[/name_m].

Ok, back over here! We’re eliminating. We got rid of:

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] – I decided I don’t like the hard CK on [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] there
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] – [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] and [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] rhyme and it’s bothering me
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u] – [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]. The slurring, rhyme bothers me

So now it’s down to:

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Bard[/name_m]

We need more comments and thoughts and we need to cut out some repeats. So, choose:

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy VS [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy

Mkay, [name_u]Cody[/name_u] narrowed it down to:

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy would be my pick from your final three. A fantastic name.

I’m going to go with [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m].

My favorite is [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] and my second favorite is [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]. But I think that [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] would be such a great first name for one of your sons, so I would be inclined to save it for that rather than using it as a second middle. I can just really picture little [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] running around after [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f].

So I vote [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], especially since [name_m]Odin[/name_m] has religious significance for you.

[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]-Sounds stop starty with all the consonant endings
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Archimedes-Ooooo a mad professor. A charming, curly haired genius.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] Abernathy-Swoon. I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the double vowel middles.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m]-Okay
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]- I do like the double C sandwich. I don’t like the word that the initials spell but I don’t think this will be much of a problem because I think bullies will find anything these days.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] Abernathy-I am not a fan of [name_m]Odin[/name_m] but Abernathy is so nice as a middle.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]-MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE! OH [name_m]HOW[/name_m] DID YOU THINK OF THIS?! Small print: Hmmm…two [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] names in one combo aren’t bad but I just wonder if this is intentional or not.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]-Too much in one name.
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_m]Bard[/name_m]-[name_m]Odin[/name_m] again
[name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Odin[/name_m] [name_u]Gwyn[/name_u]-See above plus in and yn are too matchy.

There are 2 [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] names in [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]?! I know [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] but what’s the other? I’ve read all the books but I don’t remember a [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] or [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] in there. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, that would be cool to us so it’s no big deal if there is.

[name_m]Doctor[/name_m] [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] is the teacher/mentor of [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]. He tells [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] of all the Old Narnian Tales about talking animals and the White Witch etc.

I [name_f]DO[/name_f] NOT HAVE BIG ENOUGH CAPITAL LETTERS-PLEASE USE THIS. I AM IN [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] WITH THIS COMBO! :stuck_out_tongue:

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] I remember him now! He’s one of those smaller characters that was only around for a while and I forgot him. That’s cool and totally accidental. Makes me like the combo more than I was liking it.

Good good!
