Cornflower

…as a first name for a baby girl?

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it (main inspiration came from a character in a TV programme, but also because I adore the plant) but unsure that it may be a bit too out there!
I seem to have a fondness for names inspired by nature or celestial names but I keep coming back to Cornflower. DH thinks it’s a pretty name but isn’t convinced (he prefers more “traditional” names).

Opinions gratefully received.

[name_f]EDIT[/name_f]: I appear to have posted in the wrong forum, can anyone help me move it into the girls names forum?!

Oh, no please no. I love flower names, but this one has “teased at school & for the rest of her life” on it.

It’d be a cute middle name but there don’t seem to be any nicknames and I think as a first name it would result in lots of teasing. Plus I don’t see it aging well - it’d be cute on a very little girl, but I can’t picture it on a teenager or a professional

Yeah I would stick with this being a guilty pleasure name.

This should be delegated to the guilty pleasure category. It’s sweet and fun and quirky, but not for a real human being. Maybe as a character in a TV show, like where you got the inspiration, or maybe for a beloved pet…but please, not a real person.

Well what about Belemir? It means cornflower in Turkish and I had that on my list for a while [name_f]Bel[/name_f]-eh-meer is how it is said and [name_f]Belle[/name_f] could be a sweet nickname and it will be more usable than Cornflower

Cornflowers are beautiful flowers, but I can’t see it as a first name. Have you ever think about using it as a middle name with a more traditional first?

It’s a bit…corny. Maybe this is too farfetched, but you could use [name_f]Arista[/name_f] which means “ear of corn” and Anfisa, [name_f]Anthea[/name_f], [name_f]Calanthe[/name_f], Tiare, or [name_f]Hana[/name_f] which mean "flower.’’ It gives a neat way to get to “Cornflower.”

Most flower names, even [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], could work but I don’t see Cornflower working at all.

I can see the appeal, but unfortunately I agree that this one should stay on your GP list.

Neat suggestion. I think Cornflower could be a great middle name. As a first it begs for the nickname [name_f]Cornie[/name_f]…

I can’t see this working out well on an actual person. I don’t think Corn or [name_u]Corny[/name_u] as a short name is very appealing.

Would you want to be called Cornflower?

I love flower names, but I can’t look past “Corn” or the possible nn [name_f]Cornie[/name_f].

You could use a name that means cornflower such as Talasi? I like the other suggestion of Belemir, it’s very pretty. Plus, [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is more of a “traditional” name that your DH would like.

This one should stay on the Guilty Pleasure list. Does this name relate to any other names you tend to like, though? I.e. southern names, word names, flower names?

I think Cornflower is the perfect kind of name to use in the middle to balance a more traditional first name. You could try picking some more mainstream names and see what sparks your husband’s interest, or vice versa. I probably wouldn’t use it as a first name.

I immediately pictured the flower, which is quite pretty and whimsical- probably what image you’d like for a baby girl name. However the word itself- Cornflower- isn’t appealing to me. I vote to drop the corn and go with just [name_f]Flower[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], or [name_f]Fleur[/name_f].

I can kind of see how names like Wildflower could work but I really don’t think Cornflower is usable at all. I just think of [name_u]Corny[/name_u] which has so much teasing potential. [name_f]Flo[/name_f] would work as a nn though.

I mean this in the nicest way possible but I think if I met someone named Cornflower I’d probably think…really??

It’s a corny name. Really…can you imagine the teasing???

I agree with the posters above. If you like unusual flower names, maybe [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] or [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] appeals?
