Cough Drops During Pregnancy?

Hello, it’s me again, first time mom from the jan-march due date thread!

Last night I developed a sore throat. It worsened over night, and I ended up getting up in the middle of the night to take a Tylenol. This morning I was stuffy, and have a bit of a head ache. No fever. So I am hoping this is just a cold. I know it’s been going around. I am deathly afraid of getting strep, but I think if it were strep i would have a fever. So anyways im giving it another night/day to see if it gets better or worse. But for now id just really love a cough drop! A friend of mine with two little ones said that not all cough drops are safe. But when I look it up online everything says cough drops are ok. So I’m just curious if anyone has any suggestions of which ones are safe and work well?

Thanks!

I think its more of a concern in early pregnancy. I had a bad cold early on with this one & my Dr told me he didn’t want me having any menthol til at least 10 weeks… You will need to be careful about checking if they contain decongestants - pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine can affect blood flow to the placenta. I consumed Ricola [name_f]Honey[/name_f] & [name_m]Lemon[/name_m] cough drops like nobody’s business.

You could just boil some ginger in water & take that with a little dark honey & lemon juice. Totally natural, harmless & healthy remedy for a sore throat. And drink lots of water.

Treating a cold in pregnancy (Motherisk is a great resource from The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto).

I never heard of cough drops being dangerous… oops. A few weeks ago I had a cold and popped Ricola’s like there was no tomorrow. It’s my personally favorite.

Acetaminophen is your pain reliever of choice, chlorpheniramine is your antihistamine of choice, and menthol cough drops are okay in moderation. Avoid the pseudophedrine/oxymetazoline. Plain old saline nasal spray is really the only safe decongestant.
