I love everything about [name_m]Percival[/name_m]. The relative obscurity, user friendly nickname, history, and sound. But could it work in modern society? I just keep getting this image of a well off English child in the 1800s, sleighing down a hill of fresh snow in his new, dark green coat and matching hat.
What do you guys think? Would he hate his name? Percy would probably be used most of the time.
I think you and he would be fine. [name_m]Percival[/name_m] is a name with history and class. I think it’s a very handsome name that is completely wearable. It’s almost like an unpopular alternative to the classics many use today ([name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]…). I don’t think he’d hate his name. He’d grow up [name_m]Percival[/name_m] and it’d be his identity.
I think you’d be fine. [name_u]Percy[/name_u] is a great nn!
I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] this name!
And I love the nickname even more.
It is a little risky, but such a great name and such a lovely respite from [name_m]Caden[/name_m]/[name_u]Jayden[/name_u]/[name_m]Braden[/name_m] etc.
I really do like this name and I think it is very usable especially with the nn [name_u]Percy[/name_u].
Thanks for the input, everyone! I feel more confident about putting it on the list now.
Maybe the combo Percival Hugh/Huey?
As long as you’re OK with the connection between [name_u]Percy[/name_u] Weasly ([name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]) and [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] (and the Olympians.)
It’s a great name. Yeah, it sounds a bit buttoned-up and upper-class snobby in the abstract, but the abstract disappears when you meet a person in real life with the name. I grew up with a friend who had such a common first name, we called him by his last - [name_m]Percival[/name_m]. It’s all I’ve ever called him. He was and still is one of the most thoughtful, considerate yet cool and athletic people I know. So I have very positive associations with the name.
Honestly… Yes!
If you teach a child named [name_m]Percival[/name_m] to take pride in his name and perceive it as you do, he will.
[name_m]Percival[/name_m] [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] is handsome.

[name_m]How[/name_m] could any little [name_m]Percival[/name_m] hate his name?! I don’t adore the name in itself, and I’m not even sure I love [name_u]Percy[/name_u] (although I do like it more), but I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the tie to the [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] Pimpernel, and I’m sure any other little boy would, too! I love the tie to the [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] Pimpernel enough that I’ve considered using just Pimpernel as a middle ([name_m]Samuel[/name_m] Pimpernel [name_u]Grey[/name_u]). [name_m]Percival[/name_m] is pretty fab.
I absolutely love [name_m]Percival[/name_m]. Go for it!
