I’m not pregnant but we have picked a name and a middle name, if one day we have a baby boy. I love the names we chose, both of them. I really wanted to keep the middle name if we have two boys but I would take a big risk, and if we have a second boy, my partner would probably prefer his idea as a first name (which is [name_m]Felix[/name_m]). Here is my question: Could I call my son by his first name and sometimes by his middle name only? Could I use both? Isn’t it too weird?
My sister is [name_f]Anna[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and my mom calls her [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] sometimes. Not often, and she’s the only one allowed to call her that so it’s sort of a special pet name for her. So something like that could definitely work.
My brother goes alternatively by his first and middle name. He has nicknames for both too. It seems perfectly natural, so I certainly think it could work for you!
I think it would be fine. I mean, his middle name is still part of his name after all. I think it would be great to use his middle name like that, since middle names are often ignored. Besides, I don’t think it’s too different from calling your kid their ‘proper’ first name along with a nickname (an example is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] vs. [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], which sound very different).
I know quite a few people who use both their first and middle name in different situations. Most of them are juniors who use their first name at work and their middle name with friends and family. I don’t think it’d be an issue at all to use each name at different times.
