[name_f]My[/name_f] Wife and I got the news that our first child would be a boy about two weeks ago now. [name_f]My[/name_f] thinking is, since my son will be saddled with it for the rest of his life, it wouldn’t hurt at all to get some opinions from the outside world on the names we’re already considering.
Short background on both of us. [name_f]My[/name_f] wife’s name is [name_f]Alisha[/name_f] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m], she’s African American, from a huge family. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m], I’m Irish and Welsh, and I have a small family. We’re both 29. As far as names go, we’re both looking for something that’s simultaneously strong and elegant, in that (or can be shortened to) 2-4 syllable range. Neither of us want to use names already in our family, we’ll save that for middle names. Our friends say that some of our ideas are a little hipster-y, which does make sense. I think our tastes definitely lean toward names with a more retro feel to them. We already have the middle name narrowed down to two, either [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] (her older brother’s name), or [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] (my grandfather’s name).
So far we have a small list of names we both really like. Any and all opinions on these are more than welcome, and definitely feel free to throw any suggestions you like out as well.
[name_m]Trey[/name_m] (or [name_m]Trae[/name_m]) - Probably the front runner at this point
[name_m]Clint[/name_m] (or [name_m]Flint[/name_m], as [name_f]Alisha[/name_f] feels [name_m]Clint[/name_m] may be a little too giddy-up)
[name_m]Bishop[/name_m]
[name_m]Link[/name_m] (Short for [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], which I love, though it is admittedly a tad unwieldy. I’m a big fan)
[name_m]Kenyon[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Quill[/name_m] (this one we might save in case we have another son)
Those are the ones we bring up the most for sure. Thank you guys so much for any and all help. You’re saving me from many future migraines.
I love [name_m]Kenyon[/name_m] & [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] from your list. [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] is nice, but maybe for a middle name. For consideration: [name_m]Clive[/name_m], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_m]Hoyt[/name_m], [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], [name_m]Quest[/name_m], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], Ashford, [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Caius[/name_m], [name_u]Cade[/name_u].
[name_m]Trey[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] is my pick. I like the letter repetition, a lot! Also [name_m]Trey[/name_m] has similar letters to [name_m]Terrell[/name_m], so it is a nice subtle way to honor her brother.
The * are for my favorites. I like [name_m]Clint[/name_m], but I think that something longer would work better with your middle name options. [name_m]Clinton[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] flows better in my opinion, and it loses the cowboy feel.
[name_m]Kenyon[/name_m] [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] - A Biblical standout [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] - a solid choice
[name_m]Quill[/name_m] - better in the middle spot. [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Quill[/name_m]?
I’m definitely bringing [name_u]Cade[/name_u], [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], and [name_m]Quest[/name_m] to the table. Awesome, awesome suggestions. Thank you so much!
Yeah, I really love it too. It rolls out so effortlessly. That’s also the name that has the most traction with my wife’s mom, for whatever reason.
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] has such a good ring to it, and I really love the way [name_m]Link[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] sounds for casual situations. Off kilter, but far from goofy. Plus, I played way too much Nintendo as a child.
I think you have a great point about the first name length in relation to the middle name, too. It’s something we’ll definitely consider going forward.
[name_m]Trey[/name_m] (or [name_m]Trae[/name_m]) - uno, dos, tres…[name_m]Trey[/name_m] is a number and usually given to a boy who will be the third person with the same name (eg. [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] [name_m]Jr[/name_m] has a [name_m]Trey[/name_m] because he’s the third with the same family name). It’s also used in cards, dice and basketball. I don’t mind it as a nickname but as a full name it seems flimsy.
[name_m]Clint[/name_m] - too cowboyish with the strong [name_m]Eastwood[/name_m]. [name_m]Flint[/name_m] seems kind of insubstantial.
[name_m]Bishop[/name_m] - better in the middle spot like [name_m]Deacon[/name_m], [name_m]Parson[/name_m], [name_m]Cannon[/name_m] and [name_m]Priest[/name_m] (well, maybe the last one is a bit much)
[name_m]Link[/name_m] - I prefer this as a nn for [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]. [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] is not as unwieldy as [name_m]Abraham[/name_m].
[name_m]Kenyon[/name_m] - a rare Irish choice which some may mishear as [name_u]Canyon[/name_u]
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] - A Biblical standout. [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] or [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] would be my picks.
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] - a solid choice. [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] would be a fine combo.
[name_m]Quill[/name_m] - better in the middle spot. [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] [name_m]Quill[/name_m]?
I like [name_m]Trey[/name_m] (definitely this spelling!) and [name_m]Flint[/name_m] the best. [name_m]Flint[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] just sounds very cool!
Good luck!
Welp, I made a critical error in showing the wife this site. Now she’s obsessed haha. I showed her the thread, and she’s extremely grateful for all of the tremendously helpful posts. She’s going to sign up on her own, so I’ll probably let her handle all of this with you guys in the near future.
It does, doesn’t it? I think it rates super high on the cool scale, personally.
[name_u]Mischa[/name_u] - Thank you so much for the insightful reply. I certainly never really thought about the whole [name_m]Trey[/name_m] = three thing until now. [name_f]My[/name_f] wife really likes [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m], and I actually think it works better than [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m].
[name_m]Trey[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] are my favorites. [name_m]Trey[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] or [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m]. The latter flows better to my ear.
I like [name_m]Trey[/name_m] better than [name_m]Trae[/name_m], it seems more straightforward and complete. [name_m]Trey[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] sounds great. [name_m]Quill[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] for a second son really works well, too. [name_m]Trey[/name_m] & [name_m]Quill[/name_m] sound like a good sibset. There’s also [name_m]Vin[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] ([name_m]Vincent[/name_m]). [name_m]Clay[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m]. The only ones I don’t like are [name_m]Clint[/name_m] and [name_m]Flint[/name_m], just because I don’t like cowboy/western/rodeo names very much. [name_u]Slate[/name_u], [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], [name_u]Cade[/name_u] are other possibilities.
Well, you’ve got a cool last name, so pretty much anything you put in front of it sounds good! While I like a lot of your names, my favorites from your list are [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] and [name_m]Wesley[/name_m]. I’m from [name_u]Texas[/name_u] originally, and it’s definitely used for the “the 3rd” there. I like [name_m]Clinton[/name_m] nn [name_m]Clint[/name_m] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] nn [name_m]Linc[/name_m] better. I also really like the suggestion of [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] a lot-- [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] nn [name_m]Dez[/name_m] is a great name!
[name_m]Trey[/name_m]- nice, solid, handsome name. Easy to spell and pronounce, strong sound. That being said, I would not complicate things by spelling it [name_m]Trae[/name_m], it looks too much like ‘tray’ (as in what a waitor carries) and just downgrades the name. But [name_m]Trey[/name_m] is awesome! You may also like [name_m]Troy[/name_m].
[name_m]Clint[/name_m]- another nice choice, you could also do [name_m]Clinton[/name_m] nn [name_m]Clint[/name_m]. [name_m]Clint[/name_m] is strong and rugged. [name_m]Flint[/name_m] is ok, but I think it sounds more nerd-chic than strong. You may also like [name_m]Clive[/name_m].
[name_m]Bishop[/name_m]- this is a big no for me, it just has too strong of a religious connection in my book. You may like Sheperd which came to mind when I saw [name_m]Bishop[/name_m].
[name_m]Link[/name_m]- [name_m]Link[/name_m] and [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] are nice but kind of trendy in my book, not my favorite on your list. You may like [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] or [name_u]Linden[/name_u].
[name_m]Kenyon[/name_m]- handsome and unique, although I dont think it matches that well with [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m].
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]- a nice name
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]- handsome
[name_m]Quill[/name_m]- not a fan
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] nn [name_m]Link[/name_m] is my favorite. [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] and [name_m]Link[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] both sound incredible! I’m envious of the cool sounding last name, haha
[name_m]Clinton[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] almost got my vote but it seems slightly too evocative of famous people- president musician.
[name_m]Trey[/name_m] (or [name_m]Trae[/name_m]) – Feels a bit insubstantial. I love [name_m]Trey[/name_m] as a nickname.
[name_m]Clint[/name_m] or [name_m]Flint[/name_m] – I’m another vote for [name_m]Clinton[/name_m] nicknamed [name_m]Clint[/name_m]. [name_m]Flint[/name_m] is okay.
[name_m]Bishop[/name_m] – I’m not a fan.
[name_m]Link[/name_m] - I think [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] with the nickname [name_m]Link[/name_m] is awesome.
[name_m]Kenyon[/name_m] – [name_m]Ken[/name_m] and [name_f]Hen[/name_f] rhyme. Some love this type of alliteration, but I find it too matchy.
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] – Solid choice. It’s a no fail.
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m] – I get the appeal of this name, but I still view it as dull.
[name_m]Quill[/name_m] – I’m not a fan. [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] would be a nice fit.
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] is my favorite choice at this point for sure. [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] has an intangible quality to it that I just find incredibly endearing, and my wife thinks [name_m]Link[/name_m] (or [name_m]Linc[/name_m]) is a total ladykiller nickname.
You guys have been amazing though. [name_f]Alisha[/name_f] and I can’t express how extremely grateful we are for both the advice and the kind words. After today, we were able to take a few off our list, and add a couple we like better. Right now, the ones that we seem most enamored with are:
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] - Has become my runaway favorite. With [name_m]Link[/name_m], or [name_m]Linc[/name_m] as a nickname
[name_m]Trey[/name_m] [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] - But we’re now considering this for a sibling name along with [name_m]Quill[/name_m] as well. If we somehow end up with three boys, she really likes the idea of [name_m]Link[/name_m], [name_m]Quill[/name_m], and [name_m]Trey[/name_m].
[name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] - She thinks this one is beautiful, and I’m inclined to agree. Her favorite? I’m guessing so.
[name_m]Quinton[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m]/[name_m]Bernard[/name_m] - She fell in love with this one pretty hard today when she was searching the site. [name_m]Quint[/name_m] seems to have replace [name_m]Clint[/name_m] and [name_m]Quill[/name_m] in one fell swoop.
[name_m]Quinton[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] is really cool. I’m not loving [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] with [name_m]Bernard[/name_m] or [name_m]Terrell[/name_m] though. I suppose it doesn’t matter as long as you’re using a name with meaning to you and your wife.
[name_f]My[/name_f] vote goes to [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Terrell[/name_m]. [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] sounds great.
