Hello berries,
The title says it all. Could [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] and [name_m]Basil[/name_m] work together? Why/why not?
I would like to know what your first reaction would be if you met siblings with these two names, that’s why I won’t say what bothers me a little. Hypothetical brother and sister are [name_f]Magda[/name_f]/[name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_u]James[/name_u]/[name_u]Robin[/name_u].
Thanks in advance!
No way! Straight away I thought of [name_m]Basil[/name_m] and [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] Fawlty of “Fawlty [name_m]Towers[/name_m]”. It was a v famous uk tv show starring [name_m]John[/name_m] Cleese
Thank you! You guessed it right away. I like this show a lot but it was shot in the 70s so I wonder if the association is still strong. It might still be popular in Engish-speaking countries, I’m not sure.
I am in the US and Fawlty towers was the first thing I thought of. My dad had this show on DVD and I watched it a lot during high school. I still remember the one where [name_m]Manuel[/name_m] named his pet hamster [name_m]Basil[/name_m] lol.
Lol, ditto. My dad watched Fawlty [name_m]Towers[/name_m] over and over when they were in syndication on BBC [name_u]America[/name_u], and we frequently rented the VHS tapes way back when.
I’m actually surprised, I did not realize so many people still watch this show!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] Fawlty [name_m]Towers[/name_m], so it’s a no from me, unfortunately. I also find [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and [name_m]Basil[/name_m] a bit too matchy in terms of sound - they kind of sound like anagrams of each other, even though they’re not (quite). Either one with your other potential names would be perfect, though!
I’m pretty sure there are only like 10 episodes total but they’re so iconic to UK comedy (and globally, evidently!) that it’s a huge association still! Especially since they’re both pretty striking names.
Faulty [name_m]Towers[/name_m] is one of the main reasons I love both names individually, though!
I’ve never heard of the Fawlty [name_m]Towers[/name_m], so they sound perfectly fine together to me. I think the ending of both of the names are a bit similar but not overly matching. My only associations with the names are [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] Trelawney from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and [name_m]Basil[/name_m] of [name_m]Baker[/name_m] [name_m]Street[/name_m] in Disney’s the Great Mouse Detective, which don’t connect to each other at all in my head.
I had a [name_m]Basil[/name_m] in my class and children teased him unmercisly! They called him [name_m]Basil[/name_m]-[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]-Marjoram, or Spice guy, and last but not least they said he Mother doomed him to be gay and from there they nn him Silly ffrom the last part of his name ([name_m]BaSIL[/name_m]).
Well I grew up under a rock and have not seen this iconic show, so I don’t have that association. As a casual observer though, as sibling names they have only one vowel different and so would seem quite matchy and make any additional siblings feel left out.
As for the bullying and homophobia in the previous post, I would hope that no supervising adult would let that continue now.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t know the show but the names are too matchy for me, so no regardless.
I haven’t seen the show, but I don’t like [name_m]Basil[/name_m] and [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] together, they share too many similar sounds for me. I love [name_f]Magda[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_u]James[/name_u], and [name_u]Robin[/name_u] together, and I think either [name_m]Basil[/name_m] or [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] would work nicely with those siblings, but I would use either or, not both.
Thank you all! I’m going to think this over now.
Same for me!
Thank you all! I’m going to think this over now.
I agree.
Same for me!
