So, I thought our dream of having names that completely encompasses our backgrounds and cultures would be near impossible.
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] has been a name I have loved since childhood, I love her history, the sound which lead to my love of [name_f]Maribelle[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] etc. Then [name_f]Amara[/name_f] came along and I became even more confused which I favoured most.
So here’s why I am beginning to get jittery of [name_f]Mara[/name_f]:
It’s used in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] as an alternative form of [name_f]Maria[/name_f] - Where SOs background is from mostly and the most prominent culture he’s connected besides the US.
It’s used in Romani culture and it’s also charting in Germany (SO is also part [name_m]German[/name_m],) both of my backgrounds.
It’s also a short form of the Irish last name O’[name_f]Mara[/name_f], which is also in my family heritage.
And finally, I have been obsessed with winter and snow since I was little, so while reading up on the name [name_f]Mara[/name_f]. I found out in some countries it’s an alternative form of Marzanna, the goddess of [name_u]Winter[/name_u] in Slavic culture while the actual holiday itself feels a little morbid, the image I have of [name_f]Mara[/name_f] as a mix of the Russian “[name_f]Snow[/name_f] Maiden” and The [name_f]Snow[/name_f] [name_f]Queen[/name_f]. Hauntingly beautiful, but not evil.

Disclaimer: I do love [name_f]Amara[/name_f] as well and so, they’re on equal footing right now?
What do you think?
