Could this still work for a boy?

I think I’m in love with [name]Ariel[/name]… on a boy. I know it’s been used widely on girls, and there is a Disney princess movie with it. (I love that movie.) I think it could work. He would most likely have an older brother [name]River[/name], as I’ve been in love with [name]River[/name] forever.
For combos, it would be:
[name]River[/name] [name]William[/name]
and
[name]Ariel[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name]
What do you think?

While I know [name]Ariel[/name] is a traditional Hebrew boys’ name, I can’t help but think of the Disney princess. It just seems too far gone to the girls, unless you live in a Jewish neighborhood. From what I understand, [name]Ariel[/name] is seen as quiet masculine in Jewish circles. I knew a family that was considering naming their son [name]Ariel[/name], but I still can’t see it, sorry, and I absolutely love unisex names on boys (think [name]Bailey[/name], [name]Avery[/name], [name]Addison[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Aubrey[/name], [name]Riley[/name], etc.). [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name] is nice, but a bit too much of The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid for me, what with there being an [name]Ariel[/name] and a [name]Sebastian[/name] in the movie. Maybe something like [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Julian[/name]? [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Dorian[/name]?

Good luck!

Hahaha oh my gosh, I feel so dumb right now. I’ve seen that movie a million times. I was wondering why [name]Sebastian[/name] popped into my head so quickly.

I admired this name the other day myself, but came to the conclusion it has been used too often for girls and too little for boys to work. He’d have to be one heck of a personality to pull it off!

I would recommend [name]Adriel[/name] instead because it is recognizably masculine and has a similar sound to [name]Ariel[/name].

My friend [name]Adriel[/name] from [name]Argentina[/name], age 18, loves his name.

In high school there was an [name]Ariel[/name] & and [name]Arielle[/name] (both pronounced the same way) in my class, the first a boy, the 2nd a girl. [name]Both[/name] very Jewish. At that time, none of us had heard the name before. Now that there is a Disney mermaid named [name]Ariel[/name], I don’t think that you can use it for a boy, unless you live in a Jewish community.

ah I love [name]River[/name] I hope to use it on my first child [prefer a boy] [name]Ariel[/name] is nice. I like it for a boy but as middle name

I never thought of this as a boys name but I could definitely see this on a boy. However with the movie The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid I don’t know. Certainly not combo’d with [name]Sebastian[/name]! He was the crab wasn’t he? [name]How[/name] old is that movie now? If it’s been ten years or more I’d consider it. His schoolmates won’t know about [name]Ariel[/name] the [name]Little[/name] Mermaid necessarily. I would check the SSA stats over the past 100 years to see where the name lies for both sexes.

I checked, and it was in the six hundreds somewhere for boys. Honestly, that’s enough for it to be a serious consideration for me. Some combo ideas are:
[name]Ariel[/name] [name]Octavian[/name]
[name]Ariel[/name] [name]Graham[/name]
[name]Ariel[/name] [name]Aurelian[/name]
[name]Ariel[/name] [name]Benjamin[/name]

I would say if you must use it, stick to [name]Ariel[/name] as a middle name only- I think pop culture has ruined it for the boys.
Would you consider the name [name]Aviel[/name], Avriel, [name]Avril[/name] or even [name]Errol[/name]? Similar sounds while managing to side-step the Disney [name]Princess[/name] problem.
Otherwise along the same vein as [name]River[/name] and [name]Ariel[/name], there’s [name]Ari[/name], [name]Avi[/name], [name]Zephyr[/name], [name]Cedar[/name], [name]Asher[/name], Hawkin, [name]Zion[/name], [name]Ezra[/name], [name]Aero[/name], [name]Kai[/name], etc.
Oh, and if you do decide to use Ariel as a first name, I would go with something very strongly masculine as a middle name.

It only broke the top 100, [name]BARELY[/name], for girls for all of three years. 2010 it was 213 which really isn’t that high a number. Popularity for girls overall appears to be declining rather than rising. Might be usable considering it’s apparently a male Hebrew name.

Sorry but [name]Ariel[/name] is all princess and no boy. If you do [name]Ariel[/name] you can certainly not use [name]Sebastian[/name] as the MN, that is pretty much just asking for trouble. It is still ranked in the top 1000 so I guess people are still using it. Actually 409 boys were named [name]Ariel[/name] last year so I guess it could be done, just not with [name]Sebastian[/name].

[name]Ariel[/name] for a boy is just so tough given the incredibly widespread pop culture reference. [name]Even[/name] if you can get past the reference, the other kids likely won’t. :frowning: They’ll all know the movie, and it will be a source of teasing [name]IMO[/name]. I like suggestions [name]Ari[/name] or [name]Avril[/name]…

I would just use [name]Ari[/name] instead of [name]Ariel[/name]. The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid is still very popular with kids and the association is way too strong.

I like [name]Ariel[/name] and it’s all boy to me. But I’m a) Stubborn and b) a Jew.

I don’t mind [name]Arielle[/name]/[name]Ariella[/name] for a girl but [name]Ariel[/name] is boy to me. No more confusing than [name]Daniel[/name]/[name]Danielle[/name] or [name]Gabriel[/name]/[name]Gabrielle[/name].

That said, [name]Ari[/name] is probably easier to deal with. I’m not sure you should let that stop you though. I like to see it on boys. It was good enough for [name]Shakespeare[/name].

I’m not keen on [name]Sebastian[/name] at any time, it’s a bit too well-used for me and trendy in neighbourhoods I grew up in, but I especially don’t like it with [name]Ariel[/name], that is really a case of one or the other, pick whichever you love more and go with that.

I would probably pair it with a very conventional gender-obvious name. Like I’d probably use [name]Isaac[/name] or [name]Jonathan[/name], were it me, because I’m apparently being a really boring Jew today, but it doesn’t actually have to be a Biblical name at all, something like [name]Xavier[/name] or [name]Dominic[/name] could work just as well.

Oh wow, I think that’s a no-go. To me it’s like naming your boy [name]Cinderella[/name] or [name]Jasmine[/name]. [name]Ariel[/name] is too far gone to the girls. She’s one of 4 main Disney princesses (along with [name]Cinderella[/name], [name]Snow[/name] White, and [name]Aurora[/name]), and with the marketing craze that is Disney Princesses, there’s very little that any girl over the age of 2 doesn’t think of [name]Little[/name] Mermaid when they think [name]Ariel[/name]. Sorry though. :frowning:

You could also consider Arel? I knew a guy with this name, and I believe it’s a variant of [name]Ariel[/name]. It’s less [name]Little[/name] Mermaid-y.

I think it’s perfectly usable on a little but maybe you need to move to the UK - there were 24 boys named [name]Ariel[/name] in 2009 and 17 in 2012, whereas there were 17 girls in 2009 and 16 girls in 2010 so to be honest the popularity here is pretty similar. Overall, since the 1996 it looks like it’s been used more on boys than girls but it is nowhere near common.

Now I do work in a school and most of the children have heard of The [name]Little[/name] Mermaid, these films are classics, but if they were to have a little boy in the class named [name]Ariel[/name], they wouldn’t comment or think that’s not a boys name.

I wouldn’t use [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name], although it would be gorgeous if [name]Sebastian[/name] wasn’t the crab! [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name], [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Malachi[/name], [name]Ariel[/name] [name]Solomon[/name]? I love [name]River[/name] [name]William[/name], and I think [name]River[/name] and [name]Ariel[/name] are cool together!

I live where there is a very large latino community and it’s not at all uncommon to here [name]Ariel[/name] for a boy around here. I think it’s perfectly usable.

I personally would not use [name]Ariel[/name] as a boys name I like the suggestion of [name]Ari[/name].
Also would just like to point out that I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]River[/name] and if I were to use it on a boy I would also pair it with [name]William[/name] as a middle to honor my father, so love your choice!
