Create a Pregnancy: New Writer’s Game

a couple who have split up learn they’re expecting

Parent-to-be: Jamie Roxanne Packley, formerly Whitlore (35, she/her)
Parent-to-be: Lawson Maddox Whitelore (37, he/him)
Why did they end their relationship? Both Jamie and Lawson have demanding jobs, and it was putting strain on their relationship. The failure of a work-life balance caused them to resent each other and have a heated argument which is when they broke up.
What are their reactions to the pregnancy? initially it’s total shock - they’d been careful using protection throughout their marriage as they wanted to wait until the right time. However they do vow to do all they can to communicate effectively and co-parent, relationship status be damned.
Does it give them a different perspective of each other? Honestly, yes. They’ve had talks about working out the relationship because if they’re going to be parents, they want to be able to give the baby the most stable life which includes lessening their workloads a bit. And their demanding jobs were the cause of their problems, so if that is changed then maybe there is a chance they’ll get back together. They never fell out of love, they just saw themselves as incompatible. But they agreed on not forcing that and taking it very slow.

How do the teenagers react: given their backgrounds, anxiety is what dominates once the shock becomes less pronounced. They’re absolutely terrified of what the reaction awaiting them could be, arguably more so due to [name_f]Laina[/name_f] coming from an [name_u]Irish[/name_u] Catholic home, so terminating the pregnancy is something her parents won’t allow, regardless of what else they think and feel.

Maternal Grandparents-to-be: Gwendolyn EricaO’Connor (47, she/her) & Benjamin Ashton O’Connor (52, them/they)
How do Maternal Grandparents-to-be react: [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] has a more intense reaction than [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. When they find out their daughter is pregnant, [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u] begins to yell at [name_f]Laina[/name_f] and belittle her which is when [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] jumps in. While she is still upset and disappointed in her daughter, she’s also looking at the baby as a blessing no matter what. So she decides to help [name_f]Laina[/name_f] throughout the pregnancy but then raise the baby as her own when it’s born so [name_f]Laina[/name_f] can “continue her life.” Her husband strongly disagrees with this. This actually causes a rift in their marriage. Both parents agree to cut off all contact between [name_f]Laina[/name_f] and [name_m]Kaz[/name_m], and they will be pulling her out of school before she even begins showing.

They weren’t too involved in their son’s life - aside from ensuring he was achieving academically - so the shift is abrupt and awkward, creating more resentment from [name_m]Kaz[/name_m], who’s dealing with the O’Connors’ already. Gwendolyn’s plan is strongly opposed by [name_m]Zach[/name_m] in particular, who thinks it’s ridiculous, insisting either they have the baby adopted or acknowledge [name_m]Kaz[/name_m] and [name_f]Laina[/name_f] are the biological parents. So she decides to help Laina throughout the pregnancy but then raise the baby as her own when it’s born so Laina can “continue her life.” Her husband strongly disagrees with this. This actually causes a rift in their marriage. Both parents agree to cut off all contact between Laina and Kaz, and they will be pulling her out of school before she even begins showing.
Paternal Grandparents-to-be: Zachary " Zach " Elijah Kaminski (46, he/him) + Antonia " Toni " Suzanne [Bloom] Kaminski (47, she/her)
How do Paternal Grandparents-to-be react: Toni and Zach are much more explosive than Gwendolyn and Benjamin, instantly directing their disappointment at Kaz, although they’re less shaming in a sense of comments - more frustrated. They weren’t too involved in their son’s life - aside from ensuring he was achieving academically - so the shift is abrupt and awkward, creating more resentment from Kaz, who’s dealing with the O’Connors’ already. Gwendolyn’s plan is strongly opposed by Zach in particular, who thinks it’s ridiculous, insisting either they have the baby adopted or acknowledge Kaz and Laina are the biological parents. And he’s a lawyer…so a fight isn’t something that scares him.

How did [name_m]Kaz[/name_m] and [name_f]Laina[/name_f] end up remaining together? Weathering so much chaos and attempts at control led to [name_m]Kaz[/name_m] and [name_f]Laina[/name_f] developing excellent communication with each other, to protect their son from being used as a pawn. They ended up living together to raise [name_m]Mikey[/name_m], and it was when they were in their 20s - [name_f]Laina[/name_f] learning accountancy, [name_m]Kaz[/name_m] gaining his degree as a physio - that they reunited romantically.
