criteria too tight?

My family has been telling me for a while now that my criteria is far too selective and I’ll never find a name this way. At first, I overlooked it, but now, I am genuinely worried that my children are going to end up nameless.

See, for girls, I like names that are badass yet have a soft feel. Names that have that spunky and takes-no-crap vibe and yet, names that flow beautifully in combos and sound flawless with middle names and have some sort of a soft feel. I also cannot have a name without a nickname because those are really important in the family lol. I usually prefer a little eccentric names that you don’t hear everyday but it’s not particularly necessary.

And then when I hear a name, I start pairing it up with you’re siblings and for that, I cannot have names that start with the same letters or have nicknames that start with the same letters. Kind of stupid, I know.

My own name is [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] ([name_u]Tavi[/name_u]) and I always enjoyed the feeling of being the only one in school called that as opposed to the five [name_f]Brittany[/name_f]'s in my kindergarten class. My wife, had an awfully common name and she too, prefers some uncommon names.

Currently, the names that I like are limited to merely:
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lillie[/name_f]/[name_f]Lila[/name_f]

Anothe part of my criteria is that I can imagine the name on a kid/girl with brown skin and dark hair. Too tough?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you guys think I need to losen up? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions? [name_f]TIA[/name_f]

It’s good to know what you want, but if you’re throwing away names you love because they don’t follow a certain rule of yours then you need to think: what’s more important, this rule or loving my child’s name? I for example had the same rule about no matching letters. But our favorite girl name and our favorite boy name both happened to start with L and I thought it was more important we use our favorite names.
Your rules are mostly a matter of opinion, your version of bad ass may be different than mine for example. But here are some ideas that might fit:
[name_f]Gilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Melba[/name_f]
[name_f]Frida[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]

Nope. It’s specific, but not THAT tight. I agree with previous poster that it’s good to know what you want. [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] is a nice name, btw, and really fits the criteria you’re looking for.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Evadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Madelief[/name_f]
[name_f]Demetria[/name_f]
[name_f]Isaura[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]

It’s good to be picky. It will be someone’s name for life!

[name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] (pronounced like [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f])
[name_f]Harlow[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] (constellation name with musical meaning)
[name_m]Canaan[/name_m]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]

This sums up my feelings regarding name rules. They’re so important, especially when naming your first child, since the possibilities are essentially endless. But if you find those rules are forcing you to throw away names you love, you need to, as llbaby22 says, decide if the rule is more important than the name, especially if you’re starting to find the rules a little stifling.

Regarding nicknames, it’s important to keep in mind that they don’t have to be derived directly from the name. They can be formed via initials ([name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_m]Barker[/name_m] becomes [name_f]Babs[/name_f]), or situationally (a premature baby might be known as [name_u]Early[/name_u]). A short name can even have a longer nickname (like calling my son [name_m]Arturo[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]). While a name might seem nickname proof, no child is.

I love your rules, because they are for the most part not dead sets rules but alot about the image and feel of a name. I do agree with previous posters who say to be prepared to set naming rules aside if you find a name that you absolutely love, but does not fit all your criteria.

My first thought was the name [name_u]Blair[/name_u]. It feels badass and soft, spunky and beautiful. But it does not fit the must-have-a-nickname rule.

A few names (with nicknames) that feel badass, soft, spunky and versatile to me:

[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]

[name_f]Eleni[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Leni[/name_f]

[name_f]Endellion[/name_f] nn [name_f]Elle[/name_f]

Endelyn

[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] nn Guin or [name_f]Eve[/name_f]

[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] nn [name_f]Junie[/name_f] or [name_u]Peri[/name_u]?

[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] nn [name_f]Ona[/name_f]

[name_f]Winona[/name_f] nn [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_f]Ona[/name_f]

[name_f]Zenaida[/name_f] nn [name_f]Aida[/name_f]

[name_f]Zenobia[/name_f] or [name_f]Zenovia[/name_f] nn ???
