Curious for opinions...

Hey there lovely berries!

I hope you are all doing wonderfully!!

My fiance (he proposed on [name_m]Saturday[/name_m]! eep!!) and I have a list as long as our arm for girls names, and have always been worried that if our first is a little miss that it would be a nightmare trying to name her - an argument waiting to happen!
However, recently, I really have fallen in love with one of his favourites (I always liked it, but never as much as he did), and I feel that there is a pretty good chance we will use it if #1 is a girl.

It is not a crazy, out-there name, but I know it get odd looks from the family (not that I really care about that), but I am curious as to what our lovely name-nerd community thinks of it.

… [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] …

Thoughts? [name_u]Love[/name_u] it? Hate it? Why?

[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] was mostly his choice. I really like it, but was never entirely sold as to whether it was really usable. Like I say though, it has grown a lot on me! I love the way it sounds, and rolls off the tongue.

[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] was my choice. I completely adore it, but he wasn’t so sure. I love the sweetness and beauty of it. Basically we agreed that I could have it if it went in the middle, as he didn’t like it enough to make it a FN.

Ps. All car jokes will be ignored (it was a name before it was a car, so kindly don’t comment if you have nothing better to say)

I like [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] and [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_u]Orion[/name_u] is my favorite of your boy names!

Congrats on your engagement!

I personally really like [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f]. I live in an area with a medium sized Spanish speaking population, so it seems like a perfectly suitable name to me. However, if you do think the car association might overpower the name itself where you live, that might be a reason to think it over. People still use names like [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] and [name_u]Lexus[/name_u] that were names-before-they-were-cars as baby names, but knowing the name’s history yourself won’t ward off other people’s ignorance.

If you can pass that test with a clear conscience, then I say go for it! [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is lovely!

Congratulations!!!

[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] makes for a pretty combo, and it’s going to make your life infinitely easier to agree on a name!

Congrats! I think it’s a beautiful combo, though I prefer [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] as a first name.

I love it!

[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] is pretty cool sounding, but like another poster said, it depends on how people are where you live (not that other people’s opinions matter that much).

I immediately think car, unfortunately, and actually had no idea it was a name first. You learn something new every day! =D

[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is not my personal taste and it also reminds me of [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] which makes me picture old scientists and monkeys for some reason. ]=

It just doesn’t seem like a girl name in my head.

The two names flow together nicely, though and I agree that it’s a perfect compromise between the two of you, so I would go for it!

[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] is so much more popular among Spanish-speaking families that it works well if you have any hispanic heritage, otherwise it will seem like a reference to the car. People are always going to bring up the car association, so that’s great if you’re confident that won’t get to you… but it kind of seems like that’s already bothering you. I know a [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] who goes by [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], which I’ve always liked.

Firstly, congratulations on your engagement.

I know of a girl called [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] and I always viewed it as exotic and cool, so I really like [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]. I do slightly prefer it as [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] just in terms of flow, but I think they’re both nice. I used to watch a Spanish sort of soap opera with the main character called [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] who went by Merche and I love that!

Awesome! Thank you for your thoughts. It is so nice to hear positive feedback.

We are aware of the car reference issue, but we’re not overly concerned as names are definitely a lot more interesting and varied, then say 10 yeas ago. That said, when the time comes, we’ll definitely be weighing up the pros and cons. I really like the idea of [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] as an NN for her.

I adore [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]! It is perfect, and I totally encourage you to use it. I cannot like [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], however. Not only does it immediately bring to mind cars–that’s a minor thing–but I have a bad association with the name. So, yeah, the name is wholly unappealing to me, personally. But if you love it and can bypass the nightmare of disagreeing on a name, then go for it!

(Congrats on your engagement, too, btw!)

No car jokes, but while it was certainly a name before it was a car, I would not expect the average joe to know that, or to care. In their mind, no matter who’s really actually right, you’ll have named your daughter after a car. No matter how lovely the name, when everyone has an overwhelming association like that, you have to expect them to think of it first. It’s why I probably couldn’t ever bring myself to use [name_f]Allegra[/name_f], because as lovely as I find the name, I wouldn’t want my child to have to deal with “like the medication?” all the time. So, yeah. Use it if you want, but just be aware of what your child will face and whether or not thats worth it to you.

I really like [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], or even [name_f]Anwen[/name_f].

Did you know that the car brand was actually derived from someone’s name? I believe the founder’s daughter was named [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f]. I’ve always thought it is a very pretty name. I also [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Harmony[/name_u] and like both [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Arwen[/name_f].

Congratulations on your engagement and best wishes for your beautifully named future family!

Congrats on your engagement!

I really love the sound of [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], and I think [name_f]Mercy[/name_f] is the sweetest nickname. I am in my 20s, and I grew up with a [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] who never really had any problems with the car association. I’m sure it was mentioned plenty, but it’s not like t was detrimental. She liked her name, and it fit her well.

I think it’s a beautiful choice.

Congratulations, mummacat!! such awesome news!

As far as the name, I’ve never been a huge fan of the name [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f]. It’s just never been my style. I’m sorry…I know that doesn’t help much. It has nothing to do with the car, at least lol. My dad actually wanted to name all of his kids after cars, but mom thankfully put her foot down. Anyhow, I do think that the combo [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] sounds very pretty! And bonus points: you both agreed! Sometimes that is all it takes lol.

Congratulations on your engagement! While the car reference is a big one, it is bypassable. However, I see that one of the boy’s names in your signature is [name_u]Bentley[/name_u], so if that’s ever a top possibility for a future son, I don’t think I would go with [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f]. [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is lovely though - [name_f]Olwen[/name_f] is a similar choice if your fiance can’t come around to [name_f]Arwen[/name_f].

Congratulations on your Engagement!!

I absolutely [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]!! <3

Unfortunately I got put off the Name Mercedes by an Acquaintance who had a very nasal, high pitched voice and a propensity to yell at her poor Daughter, Mercedes! Mercedes was actually Named after a Car Advertisement which her Mother fell in love with while she was Pregnant! However, where I live, Mercedes is the Name of an exclusive College and is not usually used for that reason. Regardless, you and your Fiance’ have none of those associations so Mercedes Arwen could work brilliantly for you as it does sound very elegant and sophisticated! Mercy is a much prettier Nickname than Cedes, which is what my Acquaintance used!

Congrats on your engagement!!!

I am not the biggest fan of [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], but [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] sounds really nice. I love [name_f]Arwen[/name_f].

Congratulations!

Personally, I really like [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f]! And I think [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is very pretty.

Congratulations on your engagement!
[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] isn’t really my style, but I don’t mind it. I love [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], however, and you could also use [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]! Not that I’m saying you should never use the full name, just that I really enjoy the flexibility there. [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] has a great flow to it.
