Currently Unpopular or Not-often Heard

title says it all , i think

i’m looking for currently unpopular of not-often heard of girls’ names, but i don’t want anything too ‘out there’ i want people to say “wow i haven’t heard that name in a while!” rather than “wow that name is ‘unusual’!” if you get me

my favourite name, which i don’t want to use because a family member used it, is [name]Naomi[/name]. so anything similar to that would be great!

[name]Love[/name] [name]Naomi[/name]!
[name]Naomi[/name]'s actually in the (lower end of the) top 100! So you might have different feelings about what constitutes popularity than many people on NB? : D. I’m inclined to agree - I think beyond the top 10 even, a lot of names aren’t heard that much / are much more region-specific.

Some of these are trending up and could grow quickly FYI. I am sure there are more.

Here are some ideas
[name]Ada[/name] (424)
[name]Adah[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Agatha[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Agnes[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Alice[/name] (104)
[name]Anne[/name] (593)
[name]Antonia[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Cecilia[/name] (241 - an INCREDIBLY stable name in the rankings. Like almost a flatline since 1880.)
[name]Cora[/name] (204)
[name]Dinah[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Eliza[/name] (255)
[name]Helen[/name] (427)
[name]Helena[/name] (588)
[name]Ingrid[/name] (856)
[name]Jane[/name] (368)
[name]Johanna[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Laura[/name] (273)
[name]Louisa[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Lucia[/name] (242)
[name]Magdalena[/name] (not in top 1000 but constantly bouncing in and out)
[name]Margaret[/name] (187)
[name]Margo/name (neither in top 1000)
[name]Phoebe[/name] (310)
[name]Ramona[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Rosa[/name] (624)
[name]Simone[/name] (649)
[name]Theresa[/name] (not in top 1000)
[name]Vera[/name] (512)
[name]Viola[/name] (not in top 1000)

[name]Isabeau[/name] - unheard of but not that unfamiliar because of the similar [name]Isabel[/name] sound.
[name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name] - familiar names, unusual combo here, fits the compound name trend and has French flair.

[name]Raquel[/name]

I like the suggestion of [name]Ramona[/name] or [name]Helena[/name].

ah! i did not know this  here in the UK, [name]Naomi[/name] is at 140, which is fine for me - i’m staying out of the top at least 70 here in the UK. to me, because of the ‘wanting it to be name people know of but haven’t heard in a while’ factor, i consider anything after say 110 in the UK list

eta:- but yes, i do base my ‘popularity’ decision on regional aspect, rather than any national statistics, to a certain extent. i won’t turn down a name just because it’s in the top 100. but i certainly won’t use one if it is i nthe top 100 without serious thought first, unless i don’t know anyone at all with that name (the case with Naomi up til now - doh!)

Ahh well UK numbers will be totally different, although I expect in most cases there are similar ballparks.

Sorry didn’t think of it - although I’m sort of intrigued I didn’t even think to mention [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Freya[/name], which definitely fall in this category in the US (except maybe they are even a little bit “out there”) but are obviously VERY familiar in the UK : D.

Where do you go for your UK info? I mean I can google it but is there a least clunky link? When I’ve looked at in the past a lot of the sites tend to be pop-up heavy, or just list top 100, or are otherwise hard to use…

ah, i use this one:- http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/publications/re-reference-tables.html?edition=tcm%3A77-266770
it’s from the National Office of Statistics so i official info from the government here in the UK, i believe  though it has just proven extremely hard to find via Google, ha!

i’m loving [name]Helena[/name], though it does rhyme with babies future surname which is slightly offputting (surname is 2 syllables and ends in -er) though not so bad as it is longer  i also love tha the nickname [name]Nel[/name] can be used for it

and i love [name]Nell[/name] suggested, by Spunkiedoodle, though would prefer a longer name for it, i think.

Thanks! Yes I have never seen that come up on google. Intriguing : D.

I don’t think [name]Helena[/name] rhymes too much with you future surname, if it’s the one in your handle. I mean my American accent is helping me quite a bit : D, (it doesn’t rhyme at all in American English!), but even with a British accent the vowels are different (I think?). Also if you’d consider He [name]LAY[/name] na or He [name]LEE[/name] na it’ll rhyme less than [name]Helen[/name]-a.

[name]Nell[/name] is a great nickname! I also like it for [name]Penelope[/name] (but that is rising sharply here for what it’s worth, not sure there), [name]Eleanor[/name] (but that might rhyme even more than [name]Helena[/name]?), [name]Helen[/name], [name]Antonella[/name], Leonella, and even just [name]Nella[/name] on its own. [name]Nell[/name], just [name]Nell[/name], is OK, but a little short for me.

I love [name]Naomi[/name], but same thing, it’s our niece’s name! But I totally know what you mean about the “currently unpopular” names, I love them too. Some of my favorites:

[name]Tallulah[/name] (this one might be too popular or “on the rise,” but I thought it might fit your style)
[name]Olive[/name]
[name]Beulah[/name]
[name]Mallory[/name]
[name]Phillipa[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Glory[/name]
[name]Justice[/name]
[name]Myrtle[/name]
[name]Juniper[/name]
[name]Sibel[/name]
[name]Sorrel[/name]
[name]Dinah[/name]
[name]Abilene[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]

Oh, and [name]Magdalen[/name] or [name]Madeline[/name].

[name]Love[/name] that UK resource! So interesting that they include names down to 3 individuals – SSA only includes down to 5.

Wonder if NB has plans to include UK info charts on here ever…

These rank lower than [name]Naomi[/name] (#140 and given to 400 girls) but were given to at least 50 babies in 2011:

What about [name]Honora[/name]? Its very similar to [name]Helena[/name] but without the rhyming with the baby’s last name. Good luck!

I have a relative named Anelia, which is kind of cute and different (pronounced like [name]Amelia[/name], only with an N). I’m not sure how often people call her [name]Amelia[/name], though… Probably often.
