Cutting edge girls names: Thoughts?

I’ve looked through the new SSA dataset and compiled a list of girls names that are increasing in popularity but weren’t in the top 1000 quite yet. Which do you like best? Which have the most potential to be cutting-edge names in the future? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think any of the ones with obvious pop culture connections have staying power?

Names I think will continue to rise:
[name_f]Indie[/name_f]
[name_m]Oaklee[/name_m]
[name_m]Rowyn[/name_m]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
Everlie
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Della[/name_f]
[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]
[name_u]Sailor[/name_u]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Jovie[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]

I think several others will also likely continue to rise, but I would be genuinely shocked to see any of the names I listed take a significant nosedive in the next 3-5 years.

As far as names I like, I am a fan of:
[name_f]Indie[/name_f]*
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]*
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]*
[name_f]Della[/name_f]*
[name_u]Sailor[/name_u]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]*
[name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]*
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_u]Waverly[/name_u]
[name_f]Jubilee[/name_f]
[name_f]Luella[/name_f]*

My absolute favorites are starred.

Favorites: [name_f]Jovie[/name_f], Alora, [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] - I’d be surprised if this didn’t make the top 1000 next year
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] - ^ same
[name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] - ^ - has that [name_f]Bella[/name_f] trend

I’m glad to hear other people also like [name_f]Jovie[/name_f]…it’s my favorite on the list!

[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] {on my long list}
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] {love this!}
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] {top name spelled [name_f]Serafina[/name_f]}
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f] {top name}
[name_f]Selene[/name_f] {on my long list}

My personal favorites from the list are [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] (I prefer the spelling [name_f]Serafina[/name_f]), and [name_f]Raya[/name_f]. I think the names that trend toward unisex ([name_u]Bellamy[/name_u], [name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_m]Palmer[/name_m], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] etc.) will probably continue to rise in popularity, as will the more elegant old-fashioned ones ([name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f] etc.), as those styles seem to be quite popular nowadays. I have to say I’m surprised at some of the pop culture ones that have made their way onto the list; Lyanna, for instance, is a character from Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and [name_m]Fire[/name_m] that died before the series even began, so I have to wonder if people are fond enough of what we know of the character to use it as a baby name or if it’s just a matter of the sound/flow.

I too wonder if [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is ready for a comeback or too old and fusty (I’m biased by knowing one as a child) I’ve been rooting for [name_f]Florence[/name_f] to come back since I started watching names stayistics!

[name_m]How[/name_m] is [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f] pronounced? The written form is absolutely stunning.

Does anyone know if there’s a pop culture connection with [name_m]Palmer[/name_m]? That name wasn’t on my radar at all for girls.

I completely agree with @gildedlioness about those unisex names! I thought [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] would rise higher. Maybe next year. I feel like [name_f]Indie[/name_f] may really go places considering the populist movements in this country on all sides of the political spectrum.

I think Lyanna is appealing because it fits in with broader name trends. Also, her storyline became more relevant and widely known on the show and especially in YouTube GoT theories videos.

I wonder if the show will get into the Ashara [name_u]Dayne [/name_u] storyline and if so Ashara might also have potential in the future

I love [name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] (but on a boy!), [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], [name_u]Waverly[/name_u], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]. I definitely see [name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] going into the top 1000 soon. [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] and [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] are characters from The 100, pretty badass ones at that, so I wonder if that’s influenced [name_f]Octavia[/name_f] rising ([name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] is a boy in the show, so I can’t say it’s influenced [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u] on girls though)? Who knows. Names like [name_m]Oaklee[/name_m], [name_m]Rowyn[/name_m], [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], Everlie, [name_m]Harlyn[/name_m], [name_u]Waverly[/name_u], [name_f]Addalyn[/name_f], Raylynn and [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] are no surprise - they’re right on trend so I can see them all climbing, especially [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]. I think [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] from Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars has played a part in [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] slowly climbing too, but the show is coming to an end so it may drop back down again.

@orchid_lover: based on [name_f]Xiamara[/name_f]'s pronunciation, I can assume [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f] is zee-oh-[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-ah ([name_f]Xiamara[/name_f] is zee-ah instead).

Aah so it is an alternative spelling, thank you. I am not familiar with [name_f]Xiamara[/name_f], either.

[name_m]Harlyn[/name_m] increased a huge number last year, from 76 girls to 202. I wonder what the driving force is there.

@orchid_lover [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f] is actually a Spanish name, not an alternate spelling, ([name_f]Xiamara[/name_f] is Aramaic in origin), so there is a bit of a pronunciation difference. [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f] is closer to SEE-oh-mar-a with a rolled R than zee-oh-[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-a. Of course, regional accents can affect the pronunciation a bit. I’ve heard it closer to [name_f]ZEE[/name_f]-oh-mar-a, as well as with the slightest of SHEE- sounds rather than SEE- (and I do mean very slight, haha; almost just a softening of the SEE- sound rather than a SH- sound in and of itself). I’m not great at transcribing pronunciation, haha, but this Youtube video is pretty accurate: Pronounce Names - How to Pronounce Xiomara - YouTube

I agree about Lyanna being one of the more usable names from the series, as well as Ashara potentially picking up traction with the popularity of names like [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m]. I know [name_m]Theon[/name_m] has become more popular since the show began to become more popular, as well as [name_f]Sansa[/name_f] and [name_u]Arya[/name_u]/[name_f]Aria[/name_f]. I’ve always wondered if the [name_f]CAT[/name_f]-lin pronunciation of [name_f]Catelyn[/name_f] (or names like [name_f]Catlyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Catlin[/name_f]) has gained traction as a result, too, since it makes a nice alternative to [name_f]CATE[/name_f]-lin. Also, I’ve chosen [name_u]Jaime[/name_u] as the middle name for one of my future sons (pronounced [name_m]HY[/name_m]-may, a Spanish name), and I wonder if the show will have enough longevity and popularity that pronunciation will become an issue due to the character [name_u]Jaime[/name_u]. But, TBH, I’m such a big fan of Game of Thrones/ASOIAF that I probably think way too much about names from the series anyway.

I recognize some of the names from pop culture, but I don’t think most of them are from there. I don’t understand the appeal of some these names but I like:

Indie
Eleanora
Elodie
Opal
Octavia
Xiomara
Etta
Egypt
Agnes
Jubilee
Roslyn
Seraphina
Evelina
Selene

[name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_u]Egypt[/name_u], [name_f]Roslyn[/name_f], and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] are my favorites.

My favorite is [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and i think it will be in the top 1000 in few years (if not next year).

Maybe [name_m]Palmer[/name_m] is inspired by [name_f]Laura[/name_f] [name_m]Palmer[/name_m]? (twin peaks)

Now, some of these are on my personal list of favorites:

[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_u]Marlow[/name_u]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]

That being said, the rest I am either neutral about, or would never use:

[name_f]Indie[/name_f]: I can’t use this name without thinking of [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m], and his father’s infamous line, “we named the dog [name_u]Indiana[/name_u].”

[name_m]Oaklee[/name_m]: like the surf boards, like the sunglasses, like [name_f]Annie[/name_f] [name_u]Oakley[/name_u]? I couldn’t use this name, and when I hear it, I think of sunglasses.

[name_m]Rowyn[/name_m]: now, [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] is on my list, and [name_u]Rowen[/name_u] is my preferred spelling. I know a lot of baristas, and have talked to them about names, and they all agree, if you pick an odd way of spelling a name, you’re just asking for everyone to get it wrong, and in the end, it just leads to frustration.

Lyanna: the sound is still too dated and country for me.

[name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]: it strikes me as a great last name for a villain in a comic book, I don’t know why.

[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]: for me will always be followed by the pooh or [name_m]Cooper[/name_m].

[name_f]Malayah[/name_f]: sounds like jambalaya to me.

[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]: sounds like the M was dropped in an attempt to be cute. I know it is an actual name, but, it just sounds like it’s missing something.

[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]: some boy names can be used for girls, but in my opinion, not this one.

[name_f]Margo[/name_f]: “And why is the carpet wet, [name_m]Todd[/name_m]?” “I don’t know, [name_f]Margo[/name_f]!” If you don’t know it, Google it.

[name_f]Legacy[/name_f]: like the mutant killing virus in X-Men? I’m sure it’s nice for some, but any true [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] fan couldn’t use it.

Everlie: like the brothers, but with an -ie to try to be cute and original?

[name_m]Harlyn[/name_m]: I love [name_m]Harlan[/name_m] for a boy, but I don’t like it for a girl, no matter how you spell it.

[name_u]Waverly[/name_u]: I never even saw The Wizards of [name_u]Waverly[/name_u] Place, and that’s what comes to mind.

[name_m]Palmer[/name_m]: forever a boy name, I’m sorry. There’s nothing pretty, feminine, or even chic about this name. And AMC fans will forever associate this name with cranky [name_m]Palmer[/name_m] Cortlandt.

[name_f]Arlette[/name_f]: I just don’t like the sound of it, I’m sorry.

[name_f]Arleth[/name_f]: see [name_f]Arlette[/name_f].

Amora: I like [name_f]Amara[/name_f], but not Amora.

[name_f]Xiomara[/name_f]: zee-oh-[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-ah, it’s OK, not my taste, and a spelling nightmare.

[name_f]Addalyn[/name_f]: I’m kind of tired of the [name_m]Add[/name_m]- names in general.

[name_u]Egypt[/name_u]: no, just, no.

[name_f]Whitley[/name_f]: again, no.

[name_f]Della[/name_f]: I’m neutral, it’s alright.

[name_f]Rosalee[/name_f]: not my favorite, but it’s nice.

[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]: please give your child a real name, not a nickname. They have to grow up with it, not you.

Rilynn: ugh, can we please stop with the frankin-names? You’re trying too hard!

[name_u]Sailor[/name_u]: of all the occupational names you can use, you choose one with the natural nickname of Sail? Like Snail?

[name_f]Loretta[/name_f]: “get back, [name_f]Loretta[/name_f]!” Beatles fans rejoice!

Shanaya: “man, I feel like a woman!” If you’re spelling it in an odd way to try to get away from [name_f]Shania[/name_f], it’s not working.

[name_f]Raya[/name_f]: neutral

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]: I actually love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], but not [name_f]Aggie[/name_f].

Alora: again, sounds like you’re missing something.

[name_f]Jubilee[/name_f]: actually, her name was Jubilation [name_u]Lee[/name_u], right X-Men fans?

[name_f]Viola[/name_f]: I like this name, it’s not on my list, but I do like it.

[name_f]Roslyn[/name_f]: any other [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Hobbes[/name_m] fans out there?

Raylynn: I don’t like frankin-names, and this one is a tad too CMA for me.

[name_f]Jovie[/name_f]: again, too country sounding for my tastes.

[name_f]Maisy[/name_f]: have we used [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] too much, is it really time to change it unnecessarily?

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]: I like it, I don’t love it.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f]: I like this one, too. I wouldn’t use it, but I like it.

[name_f]Evelina[/name_f]: [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] is on my list, this one is nice, too.

[name_f]Selene[/name_f]: I don’t like it, [name_f]Selena[/name_f] is so over used, this would just get lost in the mix.

[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]: will forever be the brat from the [name_u]Prairie[/name_u], I’m sorry.

I think these names will rise next year too

[name_f]Indie[/name_f]
[name_m]Oaklee[/name_m]
[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_u]Sailor[/name_u]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]

Interesting to see Lyanna there because that was my vote in the contest - so didn’t quite make it to 1000.

There are several names there that are much more popular outside the US, even in top 50 such as [name_f]Florence[/name_f] in the UK. So I think names like that are on the steady rise.

I think these will continue and rise:
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Etta[/name_f]
[name_f]Viola[/name_f]
[name_f]Maisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is interesting - it’s very popular in the form of [name_f]Ines[/name_f] in some European countries, and I haven’t seen [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] itself discussed much on forums, but I think it’s a sleeper whose time hasn’t quite come yet.
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f] is another that could take off - very close to the popular [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. I think people will be looking for another form.

Out of these, I personally like:

• [name_f]Indie[/name_f]
• [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
• [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
• [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
• [name_f]Margo[/name_f]
• [name_f]Opal[/name_f]
• [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]
• [name_f]Etta[/name_f] / [name_f]Loretta[/name_f]
• [name_f]Della[/name_f]
• [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
• [name_f]Viola[/name_f]
• [name_f]Luella[/name_f]
• [name_f]Evelina[/name_f]
• [name_f]Selene[/name_f]
• [name_f]Nellie[/name_f]

I like these, but:

• Everlie - (spelled [name_u]Everly[/name_u])
• [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] - (spelled [name_f]Maisie[/name_f])
• [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] - (but it’s a GP)
• [name_m]Palmer[/name_m] - (for a boy though, and it’s more of a GP name)

Quite a few of these seem like they have the potential to rise much higher. I’m seeing a lot of names like [name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]/[name_f]Maisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] on NB. People are at least widely considering them if not using them at this point, so they feel on-trend to me.
