I would love to hear your thoughts on this as a name. I recently came across it as the name of a heroine in a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] allegory, and though I’d never considered it, I do like it in theory—similar in sound to [name_f]Irene[/name_f] (which I also love!), ties to the crucifixion story (which is immensely meaningful to me), and I’m rather fond of Cece/Cici as a nickname. I would love to hear your thoughts on it! What would a [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] be like, do you think? What combos would you pair her in? I like [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] and [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] so far, but I’d love to hear what else you think might work!

I do like [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] in theory, but feel it’s bit strange and I wouldn’t be sure how you pronounce it. I like [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]

I like it. My grandmother had a sister whose name was [name_f]Syrene[/name_f]. I don’t know whether they are related. [name_f]She[/name_f] pronounced her name like ”syh-reh-neh”. Everyone in my family has always thought of her name as unique and beautiful, so I very much associate [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] with that as well.

I like it visually and I like the sound. I don’t know if you are familiar with the Greek myth of [name_f]Cyrene[/name] but that’s definitely my first association - it’s not a problematic story, she’s actually a pretty cool character (she kills lions who try to eat her sheep). Because of that, I picture a [name_f]Cyrene[/name] as tough, outdoorsy and slightly tomboyish. [name_f]Cyrene[/name] “[name_f]Cece[/name]” is super cute! I think [name_f]Lila[/name] [name_f]Cyrene[/name] is lovely. [name_f]Cyrene[/name] [name_f]Eloise[/name] is nice but I don’t like it as much. I’m not 100% sure how you would be pronouncing it - my instinct is sigh-REEN but BtN suggests sie-REE-nee, which I don’t like as much.

First thought is interest — this isn’t a name I have come across before. Is it SY-reen, sy-REEN, sy-REE-nee? It reminds me of names like [name_f]Eirene[/name_f], [name_f]Cybele[/name_f], [name_f]Nephele[/name_f] so I’m guessing the latter?

I love it! It sounds like “serene”, it has a rare beauty and spiritual significance. There is a similar Arabic girls’ name which can be transliterated in various ways - [name_f]Sirin[/name_f], [name_f]Sirine[/name_f], [name_f]Cyrine[/name_f] etc.

How do you say it? My instinct is sie-ree-nee (sie to rhyme with lie or eye)?
If it is similar to above, I like the poetic, sleek feel of it – something a touch magical.

[name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] feels familiar but I’m not sure where I’ve heard it. Perhaps as a place name.
[name_m]The[/name_m] sound reminds me of sirens. [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Serena[/name_f] also come to mind. It gives me watery blues and turquoise, elegance with a darker edge and a touch of mystery.
I’d prefer it as a middle name as the ‘reen’ sound has a whiny quality for me sometimes and I like the drama it adds to a first name. As a first name it’s got a fantasy vibe.
I really enjoy the repetition of the long ‘i’ sound in [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f].

Thank you for all your thoughts, everyone! And oof, sorry, I didn’t realize how obscure the Biblical reference was. [name_f]Cyrene[/name_f] is a place in [name_f]Libya[/name_f] that is especially known for being the place where the man who carried Christ’s cross was from (he was known as [name_m]Simon[/name_m] of Cyrene). I’ve only ever heard it said like sigh-REEN, but sigh-ree-nee also makes sense. I’ve been saying it like sigh-REEN though.

Sorry, I should’ve clarified that the town is named after the Greek mythological character - I got the reference, I just didn’t explain well! That’s why I thought you’d want to know about the myth.
