Apologies for blowing up the boards today , I post a bunch when I get the chance then finally come back to go through feedback and suggestions if/when my toddler decides to sleep.
I tried to get my husband on board with Crosby and he couldnāt get past the similarity to Bill Cosby. I really REALLY like the way Cyrus flows with our surname, but Iām afraid the Miley Cyrus association is so strong right now that people would roll their eyes if we actually named our son Cyrus.
To me, it sounds like an older fashioned name, like Silas (which is now popular but was more of an old school name) or Cecil, Cyril, etc. But then I remember about Miley and it taints the name a little bit.
Would you automatically think of the Miley association if you heard of a little boy named Cyrus?
[name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is a lad with that name that I used to know through a younger sister. Itās too masculine for me to get the [name_f]Miley[/name_f] association, really. Iām in the UK, perhaps that makes a difference too? Though I do feel Iām hearing and seeing her (Miley Cyrus) a lot!
I wouldnāt think of her - and itās not that sheās not big where I live (in Oz)! Iāve known a couple of Cyruses and as a result, itās always struck me as a gentle, handsome & swarthy (masc) name. I actually prefer [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] to [name_m]Silas[/name_m] - though I like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] too. To me, [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is fresher and nicer to say!
I grew up on [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] Montana/Miley [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], and I never think of her when I see the name [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] in isolation. It just has a totally different vibe to me, and I definitely wouldnāt think a [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] was named after [name_f]Miley[/name_f] or [name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] in any way. [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] the Great is actually my primary association, though Iām probably in the minority!
I would think of [name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] before [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] (but my kids would think of Miley!) I donāt think itās unusable though - just be prepared for some comments along the way.
I do think of [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] but I donāt think its a big deal. I donāt know about the eye rolling but I bet it will get mentionedā¦. [name_m]Silas[/name_m] sounds incredibly similar so that would be a good alternative.
I donāt think of her and was very confused by the title, I had to read the post twice to see that it was actually a typo, so I donāt even think of it with the name under my nose
Didnāt occur to me at all and i loved [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_u]Montana[/name_u] in my pre teen years. I think of [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] the great anytime I hear the name.
I donāt think of [name_f]Miley[/name_f] at all. [name_f]My[/name_f] association is all with [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] the Great. [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is on my husbandās and my list for our next son too.
Iām in the US and of course know of [name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] and [name_f]Miley[/name_f], but when I see [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] as a name, they donāt even cross my mind.
I think [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] makes a nice substitute to [name_u]Crosby[/name_u] for you. Itās more surname-ish type name and reminds me of an old time cowboy type name.
Actors [name_f]Claire[/name_f] Danes and [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] Dancy have a son named [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] and Iāve always loved that. Feels very UK meets US.
I donāt think the [name_f]Miley[/name_f] association is too much, no. Itās a nice association anyway, but I donāt think itās big enough to say, āOh, like [name_f]Miley[/name_f] Cyrus?ā if you named your kid that! I know a little [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], five years old. Itās a great name!
Im US based and my first thought at seeing [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is [name_m]Silas[/name_m] & [name_u]Cypress[/name_u], not [name_f]Miley[/name_f]. I think at the worst it kind of adds a country twang to the ultra soft quiet classic [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is a very strong masculine name to me. I dont think of [name_f]Miley[/name_f]. Maybe [name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u]. But honestly, its such a strong name to me that i think it could totally be a boy first name without those associations. It reminds of a name from mythology or something- thats how it sounds to me (it isnt - its Persian and means sun apparently, which is nice!). I say go for it!
If I met a baby Cyrus, I wouldnāt link it to Miley Cyrus - I would just think ācool, sunny name!!!ā It feels established as a first name, rather than a surnamey name, which helps, I think.
Iām in the US, and I do think of [name_f]Miley[/name_f] when I hear the name. I donāt necessarily think itās an overwhelming association (nor a bad one), but I do think there will be a bunch of people who think of her (and her family) while hearing the name. I donāt think it makes the name unusable by any means, but it would depend on whether youāre okay with the association or not!
[name_f]My[/name_f] first two associations with the name, that always come to mind when I hear it, are [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] and [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] from the movie [name_u]Con[/name_u] [name_f]Air[/name_f]!
I do think [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is a handsome name, though I personally prefer [name_m]Silas[/name_m] (which isnāt popular at all near me), [name_u]Cypress[/name_u], and Cecil!!
