After last night’s episode do you think we’ll see the names [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] and [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] fall out of favor?
[name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] first appeared on the SSA list the same year the show premiered, 2011, and [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] a year later. In 2018, [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] was ranked 549 and [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] was ranked 1370.
D: DAMNIT
I am only up to season 1 ep 4 with DH so will forget this but I love [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f], I find her relatable at the moment (apart from the married of to save a colony).
I think the name will definitely drop a bit in popularity. That’s why it’s never a good idea to name a child after a fictional character of an ongoing series - you never know what’ll happen. [name_m]Even[/name_m] look at names like [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]. In To Kill a Mockingbird, [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] was an incredibly inspiring character and I can see why he inspired many namesakes. However, in Go [name_m]Set[/name_m] a Watchman, the [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] who is presented does not really resemble the admirable character from the first book.
I don’t watch GOT - what happened with [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f]? I’ve seen a lot of talk online about how people who have named their children after her may regret their choice now.
She went from a character known for her compassion, strength, determination, and survival, someone who wanted to bring change and never hurt the innocent, who basically started an uprising to end slavery in the east to in barely two episodes someone who went “mad” like her ancestors before her and brutally burned many thousands of innocent lives, swooping down on streets over and over to find the people - innocent children, babies, and mothers, for her dragon to burn. And this was after the enemies army surrendered and she really didn’t have to coldly murder so so many.
It was mostly bad show writing and her character in the books might still be better or at least her going “mad” might make sense more but yeah, a bit cringe now to of named your kid after her i suppose. Though in a way you could say they named her after the khaleesi who she was before she became the “mad queen.”
Though now it sort if makes my name crush [name_m]Theon[/name_m] a bit more usable as at least his character got a redemption arc and went out heroic.
I am only on season 4 but I’m aware of what happens and I do think it will crush its popularity a little, but I can’t see it dropping much. [name_m]Even[/name_m] without the tie to the character, [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] and [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] are pretty names.
Her going mad has been hinted to many times and I have tried to warn people on here about using [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] or [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] when they asked about it. I said that there’s a big chance that by the end of the show she’s probably not someone you want to be named after.
The problem with Dany going full Mad Queen isn’t that she used to be a hero or that the show never foreshadowed it. There have been seeds, all the way back to Season 1 when she burned Mirri Maz Duur alive as vengeance for Khal Drogo’s death. She has long been vain, ruthless and completely convinced of her own brilliance.
But the show spent far more time making Dany a hero, if a rather boring one. Making her Mad Queen Dany now is rushed, unearned and emotionless.
This sums up how I feel about it. They completely wasted the first two episodes of this season and large portions of episodes 3 and 4 when they could have gone more in depth with this line rather than springing it on us the way they did. If they had taken the time to develop her descent into Mad [name_f]Queen[/name_f], it still would not have been ideal to have named a daughter [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f]/[name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] but it wouldn’t have been the near-embarrassment I feel like it is now.
I think [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] is still okay because it’s a title, isn’t it? Google says that:
“[name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] is a title given to the wife of a Dothraki warlord in the universe of the [name_m]George[/name_m] R. R. [name_m]Martin[/name_m]'s series A Song of Ice and [name_m]Fire[/name_m], popularly known as Game of Thrones after the name of the first book in the series and the television adaptation. It is roughly equivalent to “queen.””
But yes, I’d agree that [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] would be a terrible name to choose now!! & I’m sure it’s slightly embarrassing for parents who have chosen [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] for their child.
I can’t speak for the books because I haven’t read them yet (I want to wait until all 7 are out) but in the show, [name_f]Dany[/name_f] is really the only [name_f]Khaleesi[/name_f] we get to know so it’s still a word/name that’s HEAVILY tied to her.
