I spoke to my cousin today about baby names. It’s a hot topic since we’re both expecting, me in [name]May[/name] and her in [name]June[/name].
They’re having a daughter, and my cousin told me they plan on naming her [name]Daffodil[/name] [name]Mace[/name] Solstice, with the nickname [name]Daffy[/name].
I fell in love with [name]Daffy[/name]. It’s perfect. Not so sure about [name]Daffodil[/name] though. [name]Mace[/name] and Solstice are def. not my style. They already have a son with two outrageous middle names so I guess little [name]Daffy[/name] will fit in just fine.
But what do you guys think of [name]Daffodil[/name]? And more importantly, do you have any suggestions of names/nicknames with a similar style or feeling as [name]Daffy[/name] (except [name]Effie[/name])? After hearing [name]Daffy[/name], I can’t get it out of my head but I don’t want to “steel” it…
What about something like [name]Clover[/name]? [name]Rowan[/name]? [name]Amaryllis[/name]? [name]Romilly[/name]? [name]Marigold[/name]? [name]Dahlia[/name]? [name]Delphine[/name]? [name]Magnolia[/name]? [name]Leilani[/name]? [name]Azalea[/name]? I am sure there are cute nn’s hidden in all kinds of flower names if you want another flower name
I like [name]Daffodil[/name]. But [name]Mace[/name]? As in… the stuff you spray in the eyes of a criminal? Lol Or is it pronounced [name]May[/name]-cee? A bit of stretch, but maybe [name]Fia[/name] as a short, simple nn.
Like [name]Daffy[/name] Duck? [name]Daffy[/name], often used as an insult or synonym for crazy? I don’t care for it. [name]Daffodil[/name] has a nice sound to it, kind of quirky and fun, but I can’t think of any good nicknames.
Other quirky flower names: [name]Zinnia[/name], [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Poppy[/name], [name]Linnea[/name], [name]Pansy[/name], [name]Jonquil[/name], Lupine.
What about the old nn [name]Maisie[/name]. I think it is adorable and has the same feel. Or nn [name]Poppy[/name] or [name]Posey[/name]. [name]Cleo[/name] is also really cute and fun.
I love the flower, but not as a name. Would she be open to other floral names? [name]Rose[/name], [name]Iris[/name], [name]Tulip[/name], [name]Primrose[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Calla[/name]? I don’t like [name]Daffy[/name], it makes me think of [name]Daffy[/name] Duck. I think [name]Daphne[/name] would be a better way to get to [name]Daffy[/name]. Other than [name]Effie[/name], [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Izzy[/name], [name]Hattie[/name], [name]Ginnie[/name], [name]Allie[/name], [name]Nanny[/name] would all be cute nicknames.
My first thought would be [name]Marigold[/name] nn [name]May[/name]/[name]Marie[/name]/[name]Goldie[/name] though I love [name]Hyacinth[/name] & [name]Azalea[/name] as well
[name]Daffodil[/name]: not so much
[name]Mace[/name]: no way
Solstice: dont think so
[name]Daffy[/name]: means goofy so no
I always like [name]Saffron[/name] or [name]Saffronia[/name] nn Saffy. I also knew a girl names Saffiya (Arabic) nn Saffy.
[name]Daphne[/name]: much cuter
I like [name]Maisie[/name]! And maybe [name]Poppy[/name]. They’re not as fun as [name]Daffy[/name], but still good choices. No idea what they could be nicknames for though, except [name]Margaret[/name] “[name]Maisie[/name]” but [name]Margaret[/name] isn’t my style
I could always ask, but it sounded as they were dead set on [name]Daffodil[/name]. Won’t suggest [name]Primrose[/name] though, that’s on our middle name list.
[name]Daffy[/name] means a little touched in the head, but it does have a sweet sound. I don’t think you can use [name]Daffy[/name] itself, as your sister has already claimed it, but some similar sounds:
[name]Saffron[/name] nn Saffy
Safie, [prn saffy]: a Persian princess in Frankenstein, short for [name]Safiyah[/name] [pure in Arabic]
[name]Dagny[/name] [new day]-- Scandi choice, if you want one
[name]Jacqueline[/name], [name]Jacinta[/name], etc nn [name]Jacey[/name]
[name]Polly[/name] from [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Paula[/name], [name]Paulina[/name], [name]Apollonia[/name], etc
[name]Lorraine[/name] nn [name]Rainey[/name]
[name]Roxy[/name] (from [name]Roxanna[/name], [name]Roxanne[/name], Rukhsana)
[name]Sandy[/name] from [name]Alessandra[/name], [name]Sandrine[/name], [name]Alessia[/name], etc
Vianney
[name]Alfa[/name]
[name]Farrah[/name]
[name]Fausta[/name]
[name]Fia[/name]
[name]Florence[/name] nn [name]Flossie[/name]
[name]Francine[/name] nn [name]Frankie[/name]
[name]Freda[/name]
Siofra (“Shee-fra,” meaning ‘fairy’ in Irish Gaelic)
[name]How[/name] about [name]Persephone[/name] with the nn “Sephie” or “Seffie”? I always thought it was a cute nickname. [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] actually has a lovely ring to it, if you don’t mind the alliterative initials.
[name]Daffodil[/name] is a lovely flower and a lovely name, but I agree with the [name]Daffy[/name] comments. My first thought for a near-name is [name]Jonquil[/name]. I’ve always found [name]Jonquil[/name] a lovely name. I also like [name]Anthea[/name] which means blossom in Greek. [name]Iris[/name] is one of my favorites. [name]Ivy[/name] is simple and sweet. Liatris is a unique choice, with [name]Lia[/name] as a lovely nickname.
[name]Love[/name] the suggestion of [name]Saffron[/name]! Shares some sounds, as well as whimsy, with [name]Daffodil[/name] without being too similar. If you didn’t want to use just [name]Poppy[/name], it could be a nickname for [name]Penelope[/name]. [name]Polly[/name] is adorable for [name]Penelope[/name], too.
