Dahl

Hmm, I’m actually not sure what I think. I do like connection but I’m not loving the name on a girl (or a boy really, it’s very much a surname to me).
Question though, do you pronounce Dahl like doll or doll like Dahl? Because I would say Dahl with an -ah-?!

Well I’m not sure which would be pronounced like the other, but the “o” or “a” sound tends to sound like the first part of author or the word all. So sort of an “aw” sound? I’m from the southern US, so my "o"s and "as tend to blend together for a lot of words unless it’s a hard sound (milo, adrian, that sort of thing)

Oh yay! I’m glad you instantly got the connection. One of the big influences on my childhood, his work is just wonderful.

It isn’t too weird it’s actually quite charming. It seems to have a very important connection for you also which makes it that much better.

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] idea, I think ot flows well and love the meaning behind it. For a first prob no but great as a middle for [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]

Definitely think of [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl! I read several of his books when I was younger. I tthink it will make a great middle for a girl. My middle name isn’t very creative, just a common filler name. I would have loved to have a middle name like Dahl. [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] Dahl has a great flow, too.

Awesome, if it has meaning I think anything goes for a middle and that will be a lovely story for her

Sounds beautiful.

I immediately assumed the reference, especially after reading some of your previous posts.

I’m in the UK and would pronounce it D-ah-l, which is explained rubbishly but the ah would elongated rather than short.

I love the reference to [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl! [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] Dahl is really beautiful. My fear was that you were going to use it to get to a “dolly” type nn, and in that case I would have suggested a different route. As a literary honor name in the middle, and with [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] in particular, it sounds awesome!

[name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl was a notorious anti-Semite. :-/
