Darwin for a girl

My husband and I are both science nerds and like our name choices to reflect that. We already have a little girl named [name_f]Tesla[/name_f]. If and when we have another girl I really like the name [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] with [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] for a nickname. What do y’all think? Too masculine?

I think [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] and [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] are absolutely lovely names. However when they are paired together it becomes a blatantly obvious science homage. I like the idea, and i like the names individually but they are both very very distinctive.
I think something a tad more subtle, but also paying tribute to your families love of science would be better suited.
Such as Joule, or [name_f]Astra[/name_f].

I agree with this. Or, just go with [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (or [name_u]Winn[/name_u]) as her given name to subtly honor?

What about [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] instead? Then you could still have the darwin connection that the previous posters mentioned.
[name_f]Anwen[/name_f] is pretty too.

Honestly, I would think [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] and [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] were brother and sister, not two sisters. Now [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (or [name_u]Wynn[/name_u]) and [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] I would assume two sisters. I would save [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] for a boy.

I think they’re darling names to honour science, but with Darwin and Tesla together it’s a bit…eh. I second the suggestion of Tesla and Winnie, an adorable sibset! But, if you must stick with Darwin, I don’t think it’s an unbearable sibset or anything, it just screams “my parents love science!” LOL. This can be a good or bad thing, more so good.

Also, like lovemysweeties pointed out, it will be likely that others will assume Darwin and Tesla are brother and sister. To avoid this, maybe look at other science-related names and keep Darwin for a future son? Other science-related names I like for a sister to Tesla are:

Tesla and Ada (Ada Lovelace)
Tesla and Rosalind (Rosalind Franklin)
Tesla and Lumen
Tesla and Lyra (science fiction: the heroine in the Golden Compass trilogy by Phillip Pullman)
Tesla and Joule

I know I said Darwin with Tesla screamed “my parents love science!” and Joule and Lumen are suggestions, I just think they’d go great! Joule has the quirky science spelling yet sounds like a legitimate girls name (aka Jewel).

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] and I’m desperately trying to squeeze it in to baby’s name, but it’s not going to happen as our surname starts with Dar ”

Anyhoo - I think it could work on a girl especially with all the genderless names these days.

I do see the pp point regarding the names scream science nerds but that doesn’t bother me at all - I’ve had both names on my baby list.

I agree with various points others have made - the combination of [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] and [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] does scream “my parents love science” to me - honestly, to the extent that it feels gimmicky; [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] does sound decidedly masculine to me; [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] and [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] do sound like sister and brother to me (though of course [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] don’t). [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t forget about the middle name spot - I wouldn’t bat an eye if I saw [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] as a girl’s middle name, and then the sweet nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is still an option if you like it.

Also (and this may or may not apply), if you use clearly science-based names on your first two children, you may or may not feel like you’re stuck using more science names on subsequent children. Of course there are science names that are a lot more quietly science names ([name_m]Albert[/name_m], for example, doesn’t scream “EINSTEIN” to me), and you may not intend to have more than two children, but just thought I’d mention it.

I think [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] and [name_f]Tesla[/name_f] would be great names for siblings…if it was a brother and sister.

I would suggest looking for names of women scientists for your daughter. Women in the sciences are often overlooked, so I think it would give your daughter role models outside of what she may learn in science class.

Double posted.
