Dashiell nn Dash

[name]How[/name] do you guys feel about this name?

It’s been on my list for a while, but my SO isn’t sold on [name]Dashiell[/name] although he loves the nickname. I like that it has a more classic and handsome full name but gives way to a more modern feeling and fun nickname. Also I’m a third generation “D” name (my mom and both maternal grandparents have D names) and it would be kind of neat to be able to continue that tradition.

However, I’m looking for overall thoughts, associations, images, and reactions. Thanks!

I love this name. My husband isn’t sold on it yet either.

I love [name]Dashiell[/name] nn [name]Dash[/name]! I very nearly added it to my list, but [name]Asher[/name] and [name]Dashiell[/name] are obviously too close. Especially with the nns [name]Dash[/name] and [name]Ash[/name]. I love hearing others considering [name]Dashiell[/name]/[name]Dash[/name], though, I think it’s very handsome and dashing, and I imagine the most adorable, mischievous little boy.

I love it! It sounds handsome and confident.

I have an adorable baby cousin named just [name]Dash[/name], so a good association there. Kardashian usage of it, not so good association.
Am on the fence about [name]Dashiell[/name]. I think the ending sounds feminine to me. Or something else I can’t put my finger on.

You could also have another D name that you like, with middle name Ash-something., and have Dash as a nickname,
e.g., Damian Asher.

[name]Love[/name] the name and nn, but prefer the spelling “Dashel”. It’s easier for the lay reader, i.e. your kid’s teacher who might otherwise pronounce it [name]Dash[/name]-ee-elle, to get, plus you might be able to talk your SO into that spelling since it’s less frilly and more masculine.

I’m not a fan. [name]Dashiell[/name] looks a bit feminine and [name]Dash[/name] to me is a silly nickname.

I like the suggestion of [name]Damian[/name] [name]Asher[/name] “[name]Dash[/name]” - gives him a nice, solid name if he decides [name]Dash[/name] is too cutesy.

I like it! I’ve always liked “[name]Daniel[/name]” but this to me is more of a modern version, with a great nickname.

I’m not a big fan of [name]Dashiell[/name], though I think [name]Dash[/name] is a really appealing nn.

I go back and forth on this name. At the moment I’m not such a fan, but I have liked it a lot in the past.

I like the nn [name]Dash[/name], but [name]Dashiell[/name] sounds very feminine to me. The “elle” sound at the end kills it for me.

I think [name]Dashiell[/name] has a great sound- lots of bite. I always associated it with the writer of detective stories (before I associated it with [name]Cate[/name] Blanchett) so the name has [name]Humphrey[/name] [name]Bogart[/name]'s face on it for me. Does the name have any particular meaning or are you just drawn to its sound? [name]Dash[/name] is cute and… dashing!

I think it’s pronounced more like “[name]DASH[/name]-uhl” rather than “Dashelle”

I agree.its uhl instead of elle.

Thanks for all the feedback guys! I would only spell it [name]Dashiell[/name]. My own name is hard to say and spell, and it doesn’t bother me to correct people. I think people hear names before they see them usually anyway, and it’s not a tough name to say. I don’t like changing spelling on the assumption that people will not be well-versed enough to know how to say it. No offense to anyone who does, but I just feel like it’s “dumbing down” a name and for complete strangers.

And yes, I say [name]DASH[/name]-UL.

I do sort of like the idea that there’s a young boy in The Incredibles called [name]Dash[/name], and it would be fun for a son to get to watch someone with his name growing up, but it’s now why I like it. I’ve liked it for a while. I feel like it was inspired by a novel I read but for the life of me, I can’t remember which book! I just think it’s handsome and classic but provides a more modern nickname and isn’t that popular.

I don’t feel too strongly about [name]Dashiell[/name], it seems feminine to me as well as not very respectable (I can’t imagine a mature adult with this name, I’m not sure why).
I like the suggestion of trying to form the nickname ‘[name]Dash[/name]’ with [name]Damian[/name] or [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Asher[/name]
For D names (I actually couldn’t find very many)
[name]Desmond[/name]
Delwyn
[name]Dexter[/name]
[name]Dominic[/name]
[name]Donal[/name]
[name]Donar[/name]
[name]Dorian[/name]
[name]Douglas[/name]
[name]Drago[/name]
[name]Dunstan[/name]

I’m not big on combining names to get a nickname, it’s a little convoluted to me. I’m actually not a person who feels people need nicknames anyway so I’m not really looking for a way to get ‘[name]Dash[/name]’, I just think it’s a bonus for the name. Thanks anyway though. (I also don’t like [name]Asher[/name])

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Dashiell[/name]. It was a contender for our first and will likely be the name of the next boy. It sounds very Australian, [name]Dashiell[/name] gives me a sweet, charmer image, whereas [name]Dash[/name] gives me a bad boy/class clown vibe. If hubby isn’t sold on [name]Dashiell[/name], you two can meet in the middle by nicknaming him [name]Dash[/name].

I had a conversation a long time ago on a French board about the prn and it was determined the prn would be more like ciel or miel which means the prn is pretty much “deh [name]SHELL[/name]” but I think the prn of “[name]Dash[/name] uhl” or “[name]Dash[/name] eel” would be fine since technically Dashiel [name]Hammet[/name] and others who carry the surname prn it differently from what the original prn would be.

FWIW the word is pretty obscure now in French and very unlikely to come from ciel which means sky. I can’t remember exactly why because the I can’t find the discussion on the msg board anymore but I will try to find it in my emails. I found the old nameberry thread that contained more about the name and my explanation if you’re interested.

I love this name! I love that it’s classic and I really love the subtle literary connection. For some reason in my head I have always said it as [name]Dash[/name]-EEL, but [name]DASH[/name]-uhl is lovely too. I would never say it da-[name]SHELL[/name] or anything like that, so it does not sound feminine at all to me. I know that if I suggested this to my husband, though, he would NEVER agree, so I can feel your pain there. It’s weird, though, it has such a macho feel to it for me because of the detective literature, so you’d think they would like it. Maybe have him read some of those books and he’ll start to like it better.
