Dashing Little Gentlemen - Opinions?

My list for boys has undergone a HUGE makeover, and has now basically had all surnames-turned-first-names removed off of it. I found that they’re all either way too common, or, too many people seem to loathe them. I’d love to hear thoughts on my new list! Suggestions for names of a similar style would be great too!

[name_m]Edward[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Adam[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Lewis[/name_m]/[name_m]Louis[/name_m] (slightly prefering the [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] pn)
[name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_m]Michael[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m]
[name_m]Mark[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] nn [name_u]Freddie[/name_u]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m]

Ones I’m iffy on:

[name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m] (popularity might be an issue with this one, number one name where I live)
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] (love this, but scared it’s ‘too old’ for a little boy, my thoughts on boys names are totally different from my girls names)

I love the name [name_m]Walter[/name_m]!! One of my best friends whom I’ve known my life is named [name_m]Walter[/name_m], and I think it’s served him well. It doesn’t read “old man” to me like, for example, [name_m]Archie[/name_m] and [name_m]Harold[/name_m] do. Instead, [name_m]Walter[/name_m] is a name for an adorable baby, a playful and precocious little boy, a thoughtful young man, and a distinguished gentleman

I also really like [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Adam[/name_m], and [name_m]Joel[/name_m] from your list. [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] is really cute, and while it sounds like strictly a little boy’s name to me, I can see how it could grow up with a person.

Suggestions:
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_u]Everett[/name_u]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u]

I love all your names. What about [name_m]Desmond[/name_m]?

oh my god this is perfect! thank you so much! [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] is one I never thought of, and I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the girls names! The links will really come in handy as well, thank you so much! xxx

Thank you! I’m not a big fan of [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], it was the name of a villain in a movie I loved as a kid, but the villain terrified me (he was played by [name_m]George[/name_m] [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m], and he’s scary enough to frighten a small 5 year old LOL). I doubt I’ll ever get passed that connection  We seem to like the same style of names though, which is helpful  x

That’s relieving about your friend named [name_m]Walter[/name_m]! I fell in love with the name when I was 10, [name_m]Josh[/name_m] Hutcherson played a 10 year old [name_m]Walter[/name_m] in the movie [name_f]Zathura[/name_f], and I really liked it from then on! I’d love to use it, but I’m a bit scared of how others would act towards a little boy named [name_m]Walter[/name_m]. I know a little one named [name_m]Kenneth[/name_m], and I know people have turned their noses up at the ‘old man’ sound of that name, however, I think it’s a lovely name, and it has a family connection for me.

[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] & [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] are great! Thanks! x

Thank you so much! I love;

and [name_m]Luke[/name_m]!

I love how underused [name_m]Mark[/name_m] is! It’s a truly delightful name, haha!

[name_m]Edward[/name_m]- It’s okay
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]- [name_f]Love[/name_f] the nn [name_u]Drew[/name_u]

[name_m]George[/name_m]- [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]- [name_f]Love[/name_f]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m]- [name_f]Love[/name_f]
[name_m]William[/name_m] (popularity might be an issue with this one, number one name where I live)- [name_f]Love[/name_f]

I love your taste in names! My favourites from your list are [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], [name_m]Joel[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]!

Your list is mainly just solid classics. The only ones you don’t have are [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], and [name_m]Richard[/name_m].

But your girls names in your signature are a lot more spunky.

A few to match your girls a bit more? :
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Justin[/name_m] (or [name_f]Justine[/name_f] for a girl)
Emeric
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_m]Angus[/name_m]
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]

[name_m]Edward[/name_m] - I really like this name and can definitely picture it on a (little) boy, it’s one of the few classics / vintage boy names I love.
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m] - not a fan at all, it’s too middle aged man / old manish for me to like it
[name_m]Adam[/name_m] - better than [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] but not my favourite
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] - I adore this name. It’s one of my two favourite boy names. Such a fantastic classic.
[name_m]Lewis[/name_m]/[name_m]Louis[/name_m] (slightly prefering the [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] pn) - my brother’s name is [name_m]Luis[/name_m] pronounced [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] and I do like the name. However [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] is very surname-y to me and [name_m]Louis[/name_m] I pronounce french.
[name_m]Joel[/name_m] - I don’t like it’s one syllable pronunciation, I never got that.
[name_m]Michael[/name_m] - very 80s / 90’s to me
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - like it but don’t love it
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] - nms
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] - a nice name
[name_m]Mark[/name_m] - I can’t picture it on today’s boys, it screams 80s to me
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] - a very nice name
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] nn [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] - I really like this one, it’s such an underused, old classic.
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] - more modern than [name_m]Michael[/name_m] or [name_m]Mark[/name_m], but it’s still gives me the same “vibe”
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m] - personally I find [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] better but [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] is also very nice.

Ones I’m iffy on:

[name_m]George[/name_m] - I’m warmng up on this but it’s still a bit old
[name_m]Bennett[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] this way more than [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] as it’s not as soft
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] - the absolute classic, I like it
[name_m]William[/name_m] (popularity might be an issue with this one, number one name where I live) - same as above
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] - nms but nice
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] (love this, but scared it’s ‘too old’ for a little boy, my thoughts on boys names are totally different from my girls names) - it does sound a bit old
for a boy or a young man

You are very welcome, [name_u]Haley[/name_u]!

@froggie_luvah - thank you so much  [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]'s definitely my favourite. I have to admit though, [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] & [name_m]Joel[/name_m] (and [name_m]Adam[/name_m] as well) grew on me more when I found out the members of my favourite band have those names. I think it helped give me a new face to put with them!

@kala_way - oddly enough, [name_m]Charles[/name_m]&[name_m]Richard[/name_m] are ones I dislike, I’m not sure why, except that I know a [name_m]Richard[/name_m] who is my age, and he was definitely not someone I’d be naming my son after. Since he’s the first thing that comes to mind when I hear it, it’s turned me off a fair amount  [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] & [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] are lovely  I think, as far as I know, back in the Regency era (when [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] & [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f] were perhaps most common), those names were often paired with the classics. My style for boys is almost completely different from that of the girls, it seems!

@apollonia - that is absolutely amazing, where on earth do you find these?! I’ve been using what few lists seem to exist through Google searches, taken a look at Colonial records, and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] characters, but this is so much better! You’ll have to share your researching ways  x

[name_f]Love[/name_f]- [name_m]Adam[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t like- [name_m]Mark[/name_m], [name_m]Fredrick[/name_m]/[name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m]

The rest I’m neutral on

Googling “Regency [name_f]Era[/name_f] names” produced this link: http://www.joannawaugh.com/ which contained this link: The Regency Encyclopedia.

Researching vintage names is both frustrating and fascinating.

I’m learning right along with you; thanks for the inspiration!

no problem at all! haha, we can work together on these! In the Girl Names Forum, I’ve posted a thread for my top girls names, if you want to look at it

Your list is great. The only two I’m not crazy about are [name_m]Mark[/name_m] and [name_m]Bennett[/name_m]. [name_m]Mark[/name_m] seems a bit dated as compared to the other names on your list and [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] doesn’t seem to fit the style of the others quite as well. Still, they are both fine names. I just like your other names much better!

You and I have very similar taste in boys’ names. My identical twin boys are [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] ([name_m]Andrew[/name_m] goes strictly by [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], as do most adult Andrews I know, and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] goes by [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] or [name_m]Ben[/name_m]) and names we are considering for our third little man, due in February, include [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Michael[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_m]Nathan[/name_m]/[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m].

I’m not keen on [name_m]Mark[/name_m], [name_m]Joel[/name_m] or [name_m]George[/name_m] simply because I find people often try to make diminutive nicknames from them, such as [name_u]Markie[/name_u] or [name_u]Georgie[/name_u], and I can’t really see [name_m]Walter[/name_m] or [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] on a little guy. Not keen on [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] or [name_m]Joshua[/name_m], but that is due to negative associations I have from people with those names and not because I dislike the names themselves. Otherwise, I like all of your choices!

Others on our list that you might like are [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] (which I see you like as a middle, and [name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] sounds very handsome!), [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] and [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m].
