I’m currently 35 weeks pregnant with a boy and need some advice with boy names. I like traditional names and am struggling with a name that will match my husband’s 7 year old son from a previous marriage. His name is [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Ryan[/name] (my husband’s name is [name]Ryan[/name]).
We can’t use any names ending in -er, like [name]Carter[/name] (which I like), since our last name ends in -er and they all sound strange.
My current favorites are [name]Jake[/name] [name]Reed[/name] (my favorite) and [name]John[/name] [name]Reed[/name], [name]John[/name] [name]Morgan[/name], [name]John[/name] [name]Davis[/name]. Thoughts? Does [name]Jake[/name] go with [name]Elijah[/name] (goes by [name]Eli[/name]). Is it better, equal? Thanks!
I prefer the full name of [name]Jacob[/name] with [name]Jake[/name] as a nn only because [name]Jacob[/name] looks more substantial next to [name]Elijah[/name]. I wouldn’t want your second son to feel like he got the short end of the stick if you just choose just [name]Jake[/name]. I don’t think the Biblical [name]Jacob[/name] (or [name]John[/name] for that matter) are dated. Classic names are timeless so they never go out of style. I love [name]John[/name] [name]Morgan[/name] for a combo but I think I prefer [name]Jacob[/name] a little more for [name]Elijah[/name]. [name]Jacob[/name] [name]Reed[/name] or [name]John[/name] [name]Morgan[/name]? That’s a tough one! I like [name]Jacob[/name] with [name]Elijah[/name] and [name]John[/name] with [name]Eli[/name]. The only pitfall with [name]Jacob[/name] is his popularity ([name]Jacob[/name] is No# 1 in the US and [name]John[/name] is No# 20). But if that’s your fave, go for it! All the best!
Well since [name]Jacob[/name] has been the #1 boys name for years, I wouldn’t say it’s dated, it’s a biblical classic, but it’s definitely way overused. Maybe some day it will be considered dated, like former #1 in the 50s [name]Robert[/name], but I wouldn’t say it’s dated yet since its not showing a slide in popularity yet or at least for another month until the new SSA list comes out.
[name]Elijah[/name] nn [name]Eli[/name] is a beautiful name so if you like [name]Jake[/name] I would give him the formal fn of [name]Jacob[/name] with [name]Jake[/name] as a nn for the sake of continuity. Another name that can stand on it’s own and sounds like [name]Jake[/name] is [name]Luke[/name] but unlike [name]Jake[/name], [name]Luke[/name] is not a nn. [name]Jacob[/name] [name]Reed[/name] is handsome. Since [name]John[/name] is one syllable I think it sounds better w/ a 2 syllable mn like [name]John[/name] [name]Morgan[/name] or [name]John[/name] [name]Davis[/name]. Personally though I would go with something a little more elaborate than [name]John[/name] to compliment [name]Elijah[/name] nn [name]Eli[/name]. [name]Jacob[/name] [name]Reed[/name], [name]John[/name] [name]Morgan[/name] and [name]John[/name] [name]Davis[/name] could also make nice double middle names. For example [name]Benjamin[/name] [name]Jacob[/name] [name]Reed[/name] or [name]Nathaniel[/name] [name]John[/name] [name]Davis[/name] or [name]Abraham[/name] [name]Davis[/name] [name]John[/name].
If you are looking for a classic and or biblical name to go with [name]Eli[/name] that is mre unique or underused than [name]Jake[/name] and [name]John[/name] (if popularity and you’re child having to go by their first name last initial in school is an issue) but still has the same pizazz to match [name]Elijah[/name] I’d also like to recommend:
[name]Benjamin[/name] nn [name]Ben[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name]/[name]Samson[/name] nn [name]Sam[/name]
[name]Simon[/name]
[name]Jared[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name] nn [name]Nate[/name]
[name]Abraham[/name]/[name]Abram[/name] nn [name]Abe[/name] or [name]Bram[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Ephraim[/name]
[name]Caleb[/name]
[name]Thomas[/name] nn [name]Tom[/name], Mas, [name]Maso[/name]
[name]Moses[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Noah[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name] nn [name]Gabe[/name]
[name]Gideon[/name]
[name]Isaac[/name] nn [name]Ike[/name]
[name]Asa[/name]
[name]Abel[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Levi[/name]
[name]Micah[/name]
[name]Malachi[/name] nn [name]Mac[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name] nn Phin/[name]Finn[/name]
[name]Reuben[/name] nn [name]Ben[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name]/[name]Tobiah[/name] nn [name]Toby[/name]
[name]Raphael[/name]
Thanks [name]Mischa[/name]! My husband just gave me a good alternative to be able to use his favorite name which is ‘[name]Ty[/name]’ and my grandfather’s name which is [name]John[/name].
[name]John[/name] [name]Tyler[/name] and we’d call him ‘[name]Ty[/name]’. Whatcha think?
Thanks Kahed22! All good points… [name]Luke[/name] and [name]Jake[/name] were actually my top 2 because I felt they had a similar feel but my husband is not crazy about [name]Luke[/name]. He’s so picky and conservative on the names! It’s making it very hard. [name]Love[/name] your name suggestions though… called out a few to my husband - love [name]Abe[/name]. He’s not having it. Lol… [name]How[/name] long can you keep the name ‘baby boy’? Because that’s what it’s looking like it’s gonna be!
[name]Wyatt[/name] was my hands down choice before I met my husband but our last name starts with a ‘W’ so it’s a bit too ‘wiley wabbit’ together! Such a shame because this would have been a lot easier if I could just use [name]Wyatt[/name].
A few more suggestions:
[name]Isaiah[/name]
[name]Zachariah[/name]/[name]Zachary[/name]
[name]Gideon[/name]
[name]Dale[/name]
[name]Joshua[/name] ([name]Josh[/name])
[name]Jonathan[/name]
[name]Christian[/name]
[name]Alexander[/name]
Personally I think [name]Jacob[/name]/[name]Jake[/name] is a great name and doesn’t seem dated at all. Good luck with your decision
Ahh, since your a [name]Wyatt[/name] fan (I dig it too) here are some more relaxed, even some with a comwboy flavor I still think [name]Caleb[/name] would be a great alternative to [name]Jacob[/name], and really like [name]Cal[/name] and [name]Eli[/name] as a pair, it’s popular as well, but less ubiquitous than [name]Jake[/name]
[name]Deacon[/name]
[name]Beckett[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name]
[name]Jackson[/name]
[name]Mason[/name]
[name]Bennett[/name]
[name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Dashiell[/name]
[name]Dominic[/name]
[name]Damian[/name]
[name]Emmett[/name]
[name]Hudson[/name]
[name]Truman[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name]
[name]Abbott[/name] nn [name]Abe[/name]
[name]Joaquin[/name] (love this, similar to jacob in sound but funkier also, [name]Joachim[/name] and theyr ebiblical like [name]Eli[/name])
[name]Crosby[/name]
[name]Forrest[/name]
[name]Axel[/name]
[name]Jesse[/name]
[name]Roman[/name]
[name]Vincent[/name] nn [name]Vince[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name]

I think [name]Caleb[/name] or isaac or even [name]Ezra[/name] would be a great match. I like them better than ur other choices. Or even [name]Jasper[/name] with it’s subtle biblical references
hmm, I like jacob much better with your set, and then you could always have the nn [name]Jake[/name]. I also like caleb, another biblical name that would fit really nicely. [name]Jack[/name] is fresher sounding then jake, so I would suggest that name as well. Best of luck!
I know an [name]Eli[/name] with brothers [name]Isaac[/name] and [name]Asher[/name] and another [name]Eli[/name] with brother [name]Jack[/name]. I like the first sibset best.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Caleb[/name] and [name]Jasper[/name] - but our last name ends in -er and -er names don’t sound great with it…
What do you do if a name has a negative connotation and you can’t go there? I love [name]Jake[/name] and would love to use it but grew up with a [name]Jacob[/name] and it totally turns me off to the name. I just can’t imagine calling my sweet baby by that jerk’s name!!
Then there’s the problem of everyone else you know taking all the good names you like!
For example DH or I have close friends with the following children with great names that I love and can’t use -
[name]Benjamin[/name] ([name]Ben[/name]) - my best friend
[name]Jackson[/name] ([name]Jack[/name])
[name]Zachary[/name] ([name]Zack[/name]), etc, etc, etc…
