Hello! So when I was younger I named my dog my favorite name ever. Total mistake! Now I want to name my daughter this name My dog’s name is Sage and my daughter would be Saige. Should we change my dog’s name? What would you recommend for new dog names? She is likely to respond to similar sounds! She kind of responds to names like Sadie, Gage, and Daisy, but not as well as Sage!
I suppose you want to re-name your dog right?
I like [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]. If your dog is female then [name_m]Gage[/name_m] wouldn’t suit it.

Depending on how old the dog is, I wouldn’t change the dog’s name.
If you’re set on changing it, I think [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] would be the best option. [name_m]Gage[/name_m] the dog and [name_u]Sage[/name_u] the little girl are still a lot in my opinion.
I personally would choose a new name for my daughter. I know this is a huge dilemma lots of people have. I’m glad I don’t plan to have sons [name_m]Nacho[/name_m] and Toto Best of luck!
I don’t think it would be too crazy to rename the dog, especially if [name_u]Sage[/name_u] / [name_u]Saige[/name_u] is your absolute favorite name!!
I’ve got a dog called [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], and she responded (when she could hear— she’s a senior pup now and has lost her sharp hearing!) just as well to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]! So long as you keep the vowel sounds and syllable count the same, I’m thinking, your pup will be able to keep track. Perhaps a name with a long “ay” like [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_u]Grey[/name_u], [name_f]Paige[/name_f], [name_u]Lane[/name_u], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_u]Rain[/name_u] / [name_u]Rayne[/name_u], or [name_f]Grace[/name_f] would work for you!!
I know a family whose dog is Jᴀde and their son is Jᴀce. They have no problems with it that I’m aware of.
I mean, people rename dogs from rescue centres and I’ve renamed adopted guinea pigs, so you could change your dog’s name. [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] seems like a good bet - she’d probably get used to it if you started calling her it sooner than later. Still - might there be the issue that every time you say [name_u]Saige[/name_u], the dog will respond too?
To be honest, I think it would be better to leave the dog’s name as it is and choose a fresh name for your daughter. I think that it would be a little awkward to explain to people who know your dog’s name that you changed it so you could give your daughter the name – and even to explain that to your daughter one day.
But that is just what I personally would feel were I in your place. You obviously have to do what feels best to you.
This is such a dilemma. How old is the dog, and do you plan on having more kids? If the dog could potentially pass away soon ish, and you think you will have more kids then you could maybe wait and name your next daughter [name_u]Saige[/name_u]? But then you do run the risk of not having another girl (although [name_u]Saige[/name_u] is a beautiful boy name too but I don’t know if you prefer it for a girl) and then potentially regretting never getting to use your #1 favorite name. You could rename the dog, people rename dogs from shelters all the time and the dog gets used to it pretty quickly. The concern isn’t really for the dog but moreso that it would be awkward to explain the situation to people who knew your dog’s name.
I’d maybe evolve slowly from [name_u]Sage[/name_u] to Sagie to [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] if you’re thinking changing the dogs name is the best bet. [name_f]My[/name_f] dog responds equally to about ten different nicknames so I think if it naturally built into a nickname she wouldn’t really notice…? Maybe. I’m not a dog.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.
I don’t know…I guess it depends on how old the dog is. But I’m a super duper dog lover, so I say let [name_u]Sage[/name_u] keep her name.
You could name your daughter [name_u]Sage[/name_u] too, & it can be like an honor name for your dog.
I’m not sure I am following.
Your dog is [name_u]Sage[/name_u].
Someday you may have a daughter and maybe want to name her [name_u]Sage[/name_u]?
[name_u]Or[/name_u] are you pregnant and want to name her [name_u]Sage[/name_u] in a few months?
Either way, the name [name_u]Sage[/name_u] is taken. You named your (I hope) beloved dog [name_u]Sage[/name_u]. That’s her name.
As my cynical friend used to say, “Reality sandwich - take a bite!”
Our cousins did this with [name_u]Oliver[/name_u], their definitely beloved bulldog. Then they got pregnant and wished they could have used [name_u]Oliver[/name_u], but they already had their [name_u]Oliver[/name_u]. They named their son [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] [name_u]Joseph[/name_u] and are happy with that.
I love dogs.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] friends!
Thank you for your input! Our daughter will be [name_u]Saige[/name_u] as she will long out last the dog! I’m not too worried about the confusion as [name_u]Sage[/name_u] the dog will get used to it.
Thanks again!
