Dave vs. David

I adore the name [name]Dave[/name]. I always have. I like [name]David[/name] but if I name him [name]David[/name] and always call him [name]Dave[/name] what is that like. I feel [name]Dave[/name] is a nickname that ages well and grows with him all through life. Its not like the nickname [name]Maddie[/name]/[name]Maddy[/name] given as its own [name]IMO[/name]. That nn needs a full name for later in life. What do you think? [name]Do[/name] you think [name]Dave[/name] needs [name]David[/name] or can I get away with it?

I would go with [name]David[/name]. It’s just nice to put on a diploma or resume. I love all the Daves I’ve met.

I love [name]David[/name] so much it would be a crying shame not to give him the full name. [name]Dave[/name] has always been a favourite nn for [name]David[/name] so I am sure it won’t take people long to call him [name]Dave[/name] unless you make it plain that his name is [name]David[/name].

[name]David[/name] is such a distinguished, handsome, classy name, love it.

I would go with [name]David[/name] and call him [name]Dave[/name]. I think it’s a great name. If it weren’t my dad’s name, I would probably use it. But I’ll probably use it as a middle.

Anyway, as I said, my dad’s name is [name]David[/name], and everyone just assumes he goes by [name]Dave[/name]. He’s told me numerous stories about when he meets people, tells them his name is [name]David[/name], and then minutes later they’ll call him [name]Dave[/name]. (Although he goes by [name]David[/name].)
I also have a neighbor named [name]Dave[/name] and I’ve never heard him called anything else. His full name is [name]David[/name], but he’s always been called [name]Dave[/name].

So, my opinion is to go with [name]David[/name] and just call him [name]Dave[/name].

Thanks so much berries;)

I agree with the previous posters. I would give him the name [name]David[/name] to fall back on when he wants his formal name to look complete, polished, and professional. [name]Dave[/name] has a casual feel to it. People assume that [name]Dave[/name] is a nickname for [name]David[/name]. When people ask for his formal name, he will have to explain it is “just [name]Dave[/name],” because they will assume [name]Dave[/name] translates to [name]David[/name]. On a day-to-day basis, people will have no problem calling him [name]Dave[/name].

I’m torn. [name]David[/name] does look better professionally with the nn [name]Dave[/name].

BUT personally I very strongly dislike the name [name]David[/name], while I love the nn [name]Dave[/name]. Go figure.

Have you thought about the name [name]Davis[/name]?

That’s what I was going to suggest!! [name]Davis[/name] is a great name. There won’t be 3 other [name]Davis[/name]’ in his class, still offers the NN [name]Dave[/name] and it’s uncommon while not being too off from the traditional. I love it!!

The suggestion of [name]Davis[/name] is great. I like [name]Davin[/name] too I think it is handsome but open to confusion you don’t want people calling him [name]Darren[/name].

My dad’s name is [name]David[/name] and I look forward to using his name for one of my kids in the future. He went by [name]Davy[/name] when he was little and now his close friends call him [name]Dave[/name], but he goes by [name]David[/name] professionally. I love [name]Dave[/name] and [name]Davy[/name] as nicknames, so cute! If you’re not really feeling [name]David[/name], [name]Davis[/name] is a great option. There’s also [name]Daven[/name], which is the Scandinavian version.

I like [name]David[/name] nn [name]Dave[/name]. [name]Davis[/name] or [name]Davin[/name] will not equal [name]Dave[/name] and I really don’t like those anyways.
My vote is [name]David[/name]! Classic boy name unlike other suggestions.

No I don’t like [name]Davis[/name]. I am a traditional girl. Thanks for the ideas though:)
