- Neither make me recoil! I’m neutral on both.
- No I wouldn’t say they are weird. TBH I find [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] weirder than [name_m]Dax[/name_m] just because it’s so heavily associated with the President and cars.
- Yes to all! Like I said, I don’t find either name particularly strange.
- Dacks is slang in Australia. Look it up on [name_u]Urban[/name_u] Dictionary. However, it’s spelled differently and if you don’t live there its fine. Would make for some funny stories if he travelled there in the future. [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]…[name_m]Link[/name_m]…[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]? That’s kind of cool though, nothing teaseworthy. Kids have such a wide variety of names that it’s likely yours will come across something weirder.
So in general, I think these names are completely fine. [name_m]Dax[/name_m] is a place name, but an obscure one. I like it the best. [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] is very on trend with all the last names as firsts nowadays. Does it give the same image as girls with the name [name_u]Lexus[/name_u] or [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f]? Those names are made fun of a lot, so up to you whether it bothers you. I’d expect lots of older people commenting on [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] in a Presidential way and asking if it’s an honour name.
I love the name [name_m]Dax[/name_m], but it may not flow well with a last name that starts with K. It kind of runs into it. For that reason, I’d go with [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m].
Thank you both for your thoughts! I have to admit that I think I love the name [name_m]Dax[/name_m] more, but am concerned about how it “flows” with our last name. I’m not sure how to test it without running it by friends (since I’m not fond of putting our last name online)… any suggestions for that?
I don’t think it should be a deal breaker if you love [name_m]Dax[/name_m]. You can test it here by changing a’s to @ for example, but I’m good just imagining names with it. Doesn’t sound bad to me with common K names. In fact, I really like it
Both are handsome. I love [name_m]Dax[/name_m], am neutral on [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]. I also know a few young Lincolns and only one adult [name_m]Dax[/name_m]. [name_m]Dax[/name_m] does feel more laid back, but I could see a politician or CEO [name_m]Dax[/name_m]… we currently have a [name_u]Rex[/name_u].
Stinkin’ [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] is the only thing I could come up with. Kids will find a way to tease if so motivated in the least sensical ways, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.
If we go with [name_m]Dax[/name_m], does it sound like a nickname? I’ve heard of people naming their child [name_m]Daxton[/name_m] (I feel “meh” about this name) or [name_m]Daxon[/name_m] (I like this much better) and just using the nickname [name_m]Dax[/name_m]. DH thinks we should just go with [name_m]Dax[/name_m] on the birth certificate, but I always wonder if it’s better to make a longer, more “formal” name the “official” one or not…?
I had a super-sweet student named [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] once, and I remember saying, “Good thinkin’, [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]!” a lot. He was very good natured and grinned every time I said it, but I imagine “stinkin’ [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]” would probably have gotten a different reaction. ha! You’re totally right that kids will find a way to make fun of anything – just trying to cut down on the most obvious possibilities!
You could try out the first and last name combo by using a test run generator. Name genie has a simple one just google name genie test drive.
We’ve done it! You know when you keep hearing the same word over and over and it starts to sound weird, even though it isn’t? I think that was what was starting to happen with the [name_m]Dax[/name_m] + our last name combo. We put it in the name generator, I pretended I was looking at resumes, announcing him as Valedictorian, talking to a girl friend about setting him up on a date, yelling it across the room and pretending to be angry, repeating it over and over as I got ready for the day… And now I can’t tell if it sounds weird just because I’ve heard it so many dang times or if it truly is a tongue twister! lol. (Then there’s the fear from the other side of the spectrum: that I just like the first name so much that I am looking through it through rose-colored glasses and wouldn’t be able to tell if it sounded strange.) Waaahh! I can’t win. lol.
I agree with you that [name_m]Dax[/name_m] by itself is much better than [name_m]Daxton[/name_m] or [name_m]Daxon[/name_m]- those feel made up to me. [name_m]Dax[/name_m] was in our top 2 and would’ve been just [name_m]Dax[/name_m] on his birth certificate, if we’d chosen it. Wish I could help with the last name situation, but really without knowing exactly what your ln is, it’s hard to tell if it’s a run-in or tongue twister. [name_f]Every[/name_f] K name I put after it (just taken from surnames of people I know) ends up being a run-in
[name_m]Dax[/name_m] does have a casual nickname feel to it, but it’s no different than [name_u]Max[/name_u], just less familiar. A lot of nickname names are on trend anyway like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] or [name_m]Archie[/name_m].
I am not a fan of [name_m]Daxton[/name_m], but I have heard of [name_m]Dax[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] or [name_m]David[/name_m], especially if you use an X middle like [name_m]Xavier[/name_m].
I far prefer [name_m]Dax[/name_m].
[name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] hands down.
To me [name_m]Dax[/name_m] sounds like a nickname, or cartoon. Maybe that’s just 'cause I prefer [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m]. As far as being a doctor or CEO, I’ve known a doctor [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m], who went by [name_m]Link[/name_m], which I love as a nn. I don’t know anyone named [name_m]Dax[/name_m]. [name_m]Dax[/name_m] seems like a devil-may-care personality. it is hard to give a real opinion on just the sound of the name without knowing your last name. could always do a “sounds like…” for example: my last name sounds like [name_u]Allison[/name_u].
Thank you, all, for your thoughtful replies! xoxo
@babymakesthree: I initially kind-of liked [name_m]Daxon[/name_m], but the more I say it aloud the more it makes me think of a breed of dog?! (I don’t know where I get these things… but I guess it’s better that I think them now, before we have officially named our kid this, rather than later, right? haha.)
I’m beginning to think the “clashing with the middle name” may just be a personal preference. I continue to go back and forth on it, but this thread seems to be split! I also had a couple of friends suggest the names Brax and [name_m]Jax[/name_m], so I pounced on that opportunity and asked them how they thought the “X” went with our last name. Both said it sounded fine to them. So I’m not sure if this is just going to be a split camp on people that think [name_m]Dax[/name_m] doesn’t “go” with our last name (and if that’s true, am I okay with that?!) or if those two friends just aren’t as obsessed with naming my child as I am so maybe they didn’t think much of it (which could either work in our favor or work against us later…).
Moral of that long-winded story? I think I’m losing my mind over trying to name my child. lol.
@emsky: That’s a good way to look at it. I think what concerns me about that statement is that the majority of males named [name_u]Max[/name_u] actually have [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] on their birth certificate since [name_u]Max[/name_u] is a nickname. [name_m]Dax[/name_m] sounds a little nicknamey, so I think that’s why I feel pressured to put something longer on the birth certificate? I may just need to get over that…lol.
@boyandgirl and @autumnreverie: Any particular reason why? (I’m not trying to be argumentative – just looking for reasons to sway to one side or the other!)
@silkypumpkin: haha [name_m]Dax[/name_m] does have a bit of a cartoony sound, I guess! (Makes me think of “[name_u]Dash[/name_u]” a little bit, which makes me think of The Incredibles!) I agree about the “devil-may-care” personality, which makes me wonder if I’m setting myself up for a lifetime of orneriness if I use that name (as in: how much of a person’s personality is shaped due to their name and how society treats them based on that name?). [name_m]Link[/name_m] is cute!
I’m still discussing with my husband what would be the best way to best convey our last name online without actually revealing it. I am an incredibly private person with a job in an industry that requires I be a bit more reserved in online postings, so we’re trying to figure out if it would be better to do the “rhymes with” thing, just write our last name but use @ signs for A’s…or if it’s even worth the risk since these posts are not deletable. :-/
