December Baby Name Help

Hello everyone! My husband and I are expecting a daughter and we are not agreeing on names at all. Please help with ideas? We seem to have very different styles

He likes names that either have a very upbeat, Western feel, or Welsh and Celtic names:
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (I’ve met several cuties with this sweet name already.)
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] (This one is soft and pretty, but it also feels ironically “predictable”. It seems like one of those go-to names for those who want something different and unique.)
Eirlys - I like that it means “snowdrop”, perfect for a [name_u]Winter[/name_u] baby, but it just doesn’t feel right with our Southern [name_u]California[/name_u] accent.
Carwen/Carwyn

I like:
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] - This just “doesn’t do anything” for him, lol. I understand the feeling
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - He says he’d like it better if changed to “Silby”, but that just takes away all the elegance and grace that attracts me to [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] to begin with, lol.
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
Overall, he feels that the names I like are too serious/heavy for a little girl. I tell him she won’t always be a little girl, but he just shrugs. Oh, this man of mine. Haha!

One name we half-heartedly agree on, but it still just does not feel like “our daughter”:
[name_f]Odessa[/name_f]

Our last name rhymes with [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], if that helps.

Thank you!

Maybe thinking about nicknames would help your husband warm up to some of your more serious favorites? A few ideas ~

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] - Cosi
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] - [name_f]Essie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] - [name_f]Via[/name_f]

Or, you could consider…

[name_f]Nerissa[/name_f] (or [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Eira[/name_f]
[name_f]Nevara[/name_f]
[name_f]Lumi[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Liana[/name_f]
[name_f]Estrella[/name_f]
[name_f]Elysia[/name_f]
[name_f]Arcelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwyneira[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Nasima[/name_f]
[name_f]Cosette[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Carina[/name_f]
[name_f]Cerys[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f]
[name_f]Camellia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f]
[name_f]Kassiani[/name_f]
[name_u]Cataleya[/name_u]
[name_f]Celestia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Clemensia[/name_f]
[name_f]Corisande[/name_f]
[name_f]Calantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Calandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Cambria[/name_f]
[name_f]Calais[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Philomena[/name_f]
[name_f]Mireille[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadia[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]

I know there are a lot of C names, sorry. I was drawing quite a bit of inspiration from Carwen, [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], and [name_f]Cressida[/name_f]

Let me know if any of these appeal to you. I would be happy to give more suggestions from there!

ETA ~ This might totally miss the mark, but Serenity just jumped into my head for you! It shares sounds with Penelope, Clementine, and Sylvie, and seems to be a nice balance between bright/spunky and more subdued/elegant. It may be a bit too popular for your taste, though…

I like a lot of your options. I do think [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] is very heavy, but I don’t think [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is predictable. [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] feels a little trendier than your other options. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] seems like a good compromise, maybe he will come around.

[name_f]Apolline[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Claudia[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Hildie[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Odelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]
[name_f]Romilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]

What about [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] or [name_f]Olwen[/name_f]?

Hmm. You seem to have some good compromise possibilities. I agree that some cute, spunky nns might help your DH to warm up to some ‘heavier’ choices. What about:

[name_f]Delia[/name_f] - [name_f]Dee[/name_f], [name_f]Dia[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] - [name_f]Cece[/name_f], [name_f]Cissy[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementina[/name_f] - [name_f]Clea[/name_f], [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_u]Clem[/name_u], [name_f]Tina[/name_f] [more distinctive than [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], and pronounced teena at the end]
[name_f]Clarissa[/name_f] - [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Lissa[/name_f], [name_f]Clary[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] / [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] - [name_u]Caro[/name_u], [name_f]Lina[/name_f]

[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] - [name_f]Elle[/name_f] [“star”]
[name_f]Pomeline[/name_f] - [name_f]Polly[/name_f] [een pronunciation - [name_m]French[/name_m] name; means “apple”]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f] - [name_u]Tali[/name_u], [name_f]Nia[/name_f] [means “birthday of the [name_m]Lord[/name_m]”]
[name_f]Nerissa[/name_f] - Ness, [name_f]Nissa[/name_f]

[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]
[name_f]Anwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Eira[/name_f] [“snow”]
[name_f]Saskia[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] - [name_f]Dot[/name_f], [name_f]Dottie[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Dora[/name_f]
Lucelia - [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]

[name_f]Oona[/name_f] / [name_f]Una[/name_f]
[name_f]Arianell[/name_f] - [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Annie[/name_f] [“silver”]
[name_f]Evelina[/name_f] - [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_u]Ever[/name_u], [name_f]Ina[/name_f] [“wished-for child”]
[name_f]Mabyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Marilla[/name_f] - [name_f]Rilla[/name_f], [name_f]Millie[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [“shining sea”]

[name_f]Lorna[/name_f]
[name_f]Minna[/name_f]
Murna
[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] - [name_f]Mercy[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] [“gracious gifts” - very appropriate for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u]!]
[name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], Row, [name_u]Rue[/name_u]

My first thought was [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f] nn [name_f]Clary[/name_f] which has been suggested. Similarly, would you both like [name_f]Carissa[/name_f] or [name_f]Carina[/name_f]? Other thoughts that occurred to me are [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_u]Carmel[/name_u] or [name_f]Camila[/name_f], [name_u]Gwynne[/name_u] or [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], [name_f]Millicent[/name_f], [name_f]Jessamy[/name_f], [name_f]Alicia[/name_f], [name_f]Paloma[/name_f], [name_f]Nerissa[/name_f]

[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]

If you like [name_f]Odessa[/name_f], you might like [name_f]Odetta[/name_f] or [name_f]Odette[/name_f], maybe even [name_f]Odile[/name_f], [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] or [name_m]Odie[/name_m].
[name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Neve[/name_f] (think it means snowdrop?)
[name_u]Winslow[/name_u]/[name_f]Winslet[/name_f] (for some reason these sound like [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] to me)
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] (similar to [name_f]Penelope[/name_f])
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (similar feel to [name_f]Clementine[/name_f])
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Arielle[/name_f]

Thank you for the suggestions so far!

@dream.create - I like your suggestion of [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. I’ll bring that one up with my husband. I’ve mentioned nicknames to him regarding our current options, but he doesn’t seem too keen on nicknames. And, you’re right, I do have a fondness for the letter “C”, particularly the hard C sound :-)…not that I’d exclude names with other initials. I’m totally open to suggestions at this point. Thank you!

@sarah1800 - I wish I could warm him up to [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], but he gave a flat out no when I suggested it a while ago, lol. [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] might have a chance :-). Thank you!

@handsallover - I’ve suggested [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] to him before, but alas it’s one of those “heavy” sounding names to his ears. Thanks!

@morning_glory - I love that you suggested [name_f]Clementina[/name_f] as it’s closer to my preferred way of pronouncing [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] (with a “-teen” ending). Hubby, however, likes the rhymes with “time” pronunciation better, and I’m sure that’s how the rest of the people we’ll come across will pronounce it too. [name_m]Ah[/name_m] well. And [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a name I’ve liked for ages, with “[name_f]Carly[/name_f]” as a nickname, but he was lukewarm toward it. Thank you!

@erin beth - Thank you for suggesting [name_f]Camila[/name_f], although I might present him with [name_f]Camille[/name_f] as an option as well as that might better fit the brighter sounds he seems to prefer

@Autumn13 - I quite like [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] from your signature :slight_smile:

@justineandnames - [name_f]Carys[/name_f] is lovely! And I like [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] from your signature too. Thank you!

Thank you everyone for taking the time to make suggestions!

What about [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]? Then you can call her [name_u]Frankie[/name_u].

I live in Southern [name_u]California[/name_u] too and I laughed when u described [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] being the go to unique name. Strangely I have met very few Clementines in [name_u]Cali[/name_u] although I do feel it’s on everyone’s list.
I love love love [name_f]Odessa[/name_f] and [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] both were on my short hospital name list for my younger 2 daughter B0heme and P@loma.

[name_u]Quinn[/name_u] I hear a lot of and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] as well. I only tell u this because when I named my oldest I knew no children so I wasn’t aware of what littles were being called. Some suggestions from my list are

[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]
[name_u]Dove[/name_u]
[name_f]Gala[/name_f]- like [name_f]Gala[/name_f] Dali the wife and muse of [name_m]Salvador[/name_m] Dali
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
[name_f]Mazarine[/name_f]
[name_u]Cedar[/name_u]
Aloemae
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_u]Langley[/name_u]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Frida[/name_f]

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] are my favorites!
