I’m having a difficult time deciding between [name]Declan[/name] and [name]Sidney[/name]. Middle name will be [name]James[/name].
I love [name]Sidney[/name], partially for the literary connection to [name]Sydney[/name] Carton in A Tale of Two Cities, and it was also my great-grandfather’s name. I fear, though, that girls may have taken over the name and it’s just too feminized these days.
And then there’s [name]Declan[/name]. I’m always on the fence about [name]Declan[/name], but I do think it’s very strong and masculine, which can’t exactly be said for [name]Sidney[/name] anymore, sadly.
What do you think?
[name]Sidney[/name] automatically makes me think girl. I’m in the US though…not sure where you are so it may be different. I love that it’s a family name though.
I love [name]Declan[/name]! [name]Even[/name] though [name]Sydney[/name] is quite unisex (even more girly) where I am, it just doesn’t hold the masculine, quirky appeal that [name]Declan[/name] has, imo. [name]Declan[/name] [name]James[/name] is so handsome! Would you consider [name]Declan[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] [name]James[/name]? I love the family significance of [name]Sidney[/name] for you, but I agree it’s more risky as a FN. If you’re open to two MNs, I think [name]Declan[/name] [name]Sidney[/name] [name]James[/name] would be really handsome.
Good luck!
To me, [name]Declan[/name] sounds so much better. I live in [name]Canada[/name] and I automatically think [name]Sidney[/name] as a girl.
I love [name]Sidney[/name] for a boy. However, I’d never use it; unfortunately [name]Sidney[/name] is extremely popular for girls, and I wouldn’t want to give a “girl” name to a boy.
[name]Declan[/name] I think is an equally magnificent choice, but much more wearable.
I like them both. To me [name]Sidney[/name] is a boys name, and I have only met one female [name]Sidney[/name], but she spelled her name [name]Sydney[/name]. [name]Sidney[/name] is still in the top 1000 for boys so I would say it is definitely usable, just rare. I like [name]Declan[/name] a lot though and the saint connection makes it a real winner for me.
I like [name]Declan[/name] [name]James[/name] best out of your two selections, but [name]Sidney[/name] is a classic name too.
I have the same issue with [name]Sidney[/name]. I prefer the [name]Sydney[/name] spelling, but I’m also worried about the ‘gone to the girls’ issue. I’d like to use it as a mn because the city has a lot of meaning to me, but I don’t think I have enough courage to use it up front. I also think about using it as a mn for a girl. So, having blabbered on about that, I think you should go with [name]Declan[/name].
[name]Sidney[/name] reminds me of a fairly girly unisex names and i really don’t like unisex names, also i am from and live in australia and i really don’t like it if you were to have a sidney you should spell it [name]Sydney[/name], but either way i don’t really like it.
I like [name]Declan[/name] it’s masculine and very good, so i think you should go with declan
I like [name]Sidney[/name] a lot for a boy (I vastly prefer ‘unisex’ (ie: boy names on girls) names on boys… shocking, I know). I think of [name]Sidney[/name] [name]Crosby[/name]. I think with him being in the spotlight for the past 7 years (and I don’t think it’ll fade for a while, if ever), people are definitely more informed that [name]Sidney[/name] is in fact a boy’s name. I love that it was your grandfather’s name! That’s the extra push to sway me towards [name]Sidney[/name] because I do like [name]Declan[/name] and I think if I were naming a son, I’d choose [name]Declan[/name], but if I had a family member named [name]Sidney[/name] who I wanted to honour and I loved the name and my husband agreed to it, then I’d go with [name]Sidney[/name]. I think family names are great.
I think the UK is possibly the only place where if [name]Sidney[/name] was used on a little girl people would give you dodgy looks and wonder what planet you were from, lol! It is still very much a boys name and I’ve never heard or seen it on a little girl in the UK. I know of little twins named [name]Florence[/name] and [name]Sidney[/name] and I just love their names so gorgeous. [name]Sidney[/name] sounds so masculine to me, I couldn’t picture a little girl with this name. [name]Sidney[/name] [name]James[/name] is very handsome and if you love it, don’t be afraid to use it!
[name]Declan[/name] is a lovely name too, and it would probably make me list if it fitted more with my style of names. It fits with a lot of other trends right now being Irish and ending in -an.
I vote [name]Sidney[/name] [name]James[/name] because its a classic choice and no matter its use on little girls, its still a boys name.
Definitely [name]Sidney[/name]! I’m in the South, and I’ve met guys named [name]Sidney[/name] of all ages. I don’t find it girly - just androgynous. Like some people have pointed out, [name]Sidney[/name] is still in the top 1000 for boys. The nickname [name]Sid[/name] is very masculine and boyish, and I’d love to see a little boy rock it. I think it’s sad that parents will give a boy’s name to a girl without blinking an eye, but when it comes to giving a boy a name that’s become more popular for girls the name is “off limits.”
[name]Sidney[/name] [name]James[/name] is very handsome and honors family. I say go for it. My thoughts are that a [name]Sidney[/name] would be distinguished and stand out, whereas [name]Declan[/name] would be lost in a sea of boys with similar and rhyming names.
