Have you seen the tweet going around that says that all white girls have [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Ann/name_f or [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] as a middle name?
[name_f]My[/name_f] sister who knows I’m a name nerd just posted it on my wall, haha.
It’s funny because it’s true. I’ve long said those are the default middle names of our generation, and she and I both have one, and my best friend and one of our other mutual friends have the other two.
But, I was saying that it’ll be the same thing with our kids’ generation–just with [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].
What do you think? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I hit the nail on the head with those four as the new classic set, or did I get one wrong? What do you think are the top new default middle names?
I don’t think [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] will be a staple middle for this gen, but [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], maybe [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. I actually think some other ones from the past will still be on there since honour middles are quite common. So [name_f]Ann[/name_f]/Anne, [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/Katherine, maybe even [name_f]Renee[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_u]Louise[/name_u] or [name_u]Lynn[/name_u].
See I would say my mother’s generation is more [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_u]Anne[/name_u] and [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]. She’s in her late 50s. I’m 30 and all the girls I know either have an honour name, something quite original or [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]May[/name_f] as their Mn. So maybe it’s a country specific thing as well?
Marie and [name_u]Louise[/name_u] were a lot of my friends middle names in school. [name_f]Amy[/name_f] was common too.
I guess the one or two syllable names are versatile.
Maybe [name_f]Jane[/name_f] in there somewhere too?
I think you’re right about [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. I’ve never heard middle name [name_f]Belle[/name_f] but it definitely fits the sweet, one-syllable trend.
Maybe [name_f]Jade[/name_f] and [name_f]May[/name_f], too?
My cousins’ baby girls’ middle names are [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]. They’re all nice names, but they all (with the exception of [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]) feel pretty default for middles. I think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a default middle is still very much out there, and then one-syllable or -elle/-belle names flow well with most things, so they’re popular choices too.
I definitely agree I also think the default middle names will probably be [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f]/May, [name_f]Grace[/name_f] & potentially for hipster baby names could be [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u].
Just want to throw in that I think “filler” middles tend to fall into two categories: short and sweet one syllable, or two syllables where the stress is on the second syllable. Both categories sound good with almost all names.
Most of the names we’re brainstorming are in the first category.
I wonder what the modern answer is to [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Renee[/name_f], etc? I think [name_u]Louise[/name_u] is a good idea there.
I think if you went in to a sea of elementary school girls half of them would have the middle name “[name_f]Mae[/name_f].” I also see a lot of [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. In the past few years I’ve seen a major rise in the middle name [name_u]James[/name_u] for girls - same thing with [name_u]Monroe[/name_u].
I almost said [name_f]Mae[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]! Guess I should have haha. Also ditto on the [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f]!
I 100% agree with you on the [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_u]Anne[/name_u], and [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] being the white girl names of last generation! I’ve always said [name_u]Marie[/name_u] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] but [name_u]Anne[/name_u] and [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] deserve to be in that too.
I almost feel like [name_f]Grace[/name_f] can fit in that generation too. I know a lot of people closer to my age with [name_f]Grace[/name_f] as their middle name.
I’d say the new generation is [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_u]Lou[/name_u], and [name_f]Mae[/name_f]/Rae
Definitely [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f]! [name_f]Mae[/name_f]/May is probably more likely than [name_f]Belle[/name_f] or [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. I’ve encountered [name_f]Claire[/name_f] a lot… [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f], and [name_u]June[/name_u], too. Also, it sounds like [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Jade[/name_f] are pretty up and coming for girls. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] still feel quite underused – I don’t know a single little girl with one of those for a mn, but the rest of the above, at least one!
So I would say [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f]/Mae, & [name_f]Claire[/name_f] are the new staples.
You know, after I posted it I thought maybe [name_f]May[/name_f]/Mae and [name_f]Claire[/name_f] were better than [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], especially among non-berry types, so I may just stand corrected here!
